Hey guys, I took the OAT a few day ago and needless to say my scores were beyond horrible :\ My AA was 270 and my TS was 240. Before you tease me relentlessly and tell me I shouldn't even try, listen to my reason. I have not taken Organic Chemistry yet or physics and I did not have enough time to study for the test because I decided to do optometry very late. I'm graduating a year early from undergrad so my schedule worked out so i take some pre-reqs in the fall and spring. The main question is, I want to retake the OAT and definitely will but since I have to wait 3 months, it will be in the end of November. Should I even bother applying to this cycle? :\ I'm just really worried and scared because I feel like if I turn in my application now, the schools are just going to reject me without even looking at the rest of my application. My GPA is around a 3.4 and I hold many leadership positions in organizations and have lots of shadowing experience, not just with optometrists but with many other different doctors so I really know I want to do this. Please be kind and don't harass me, I'm just asking for help...

Honestly, I would hold off on submitting your application until you retook the OAT. Schools say they place a hold on your application if you indicate a new test date, but I wouldn't want to risk it with those scores. Your GPA is good, so don't let your low OAT scores cloud the rest of your application. I'm in the process of applying myself, so thats my thoughts on your situation. Also, I read on other threads that anytime before December is still considered "early" since most schools accept applications until March. Good luck!

Hi,

If you haven't taken O-Chem and Physics yet, you should consider taking it and then taking your OAT because those are pre-requisite courses to Optometry school. After completing those courses you may try the OAT. Have faith and don't give up. Good luck!

Thank you guys! I'm sure if I retake it in November that ill be able to study ochem and physics 2 enough to where I can get at least average scores on the test. Also, I need to brush up on biology more. Thank you for being nice, I was worried someone would just say give up. This is really my passion and I feel like I want to start it as soon as possible.

I would wait til you take Physics and especially Ochem before you retake the OAT. Ochem concepts are quite difficult to learn on your own. Physics you might be able to get away with self teaching because its math. It will be hard to raise your score at all without learning those subjects in a classroom.

But by the time I take it in November ill already be taking Ochem. That's where I have some hope bc I noticed most of the things in general chem were from the first part of the class

Are you taking the first or second semester of organic chemistry. Usually there are two semesters of ochem at most colleges. The second semester is just as important as the first. There was a good amount of stereoisomer, carbonyl, and spectroscopy questions. If you really wanna try and teach yourself, then use http://www.freelance-teacher.com/videos.htm, chad's videos, or khan academy. However, again it does not make sense to take a test that has a section you have never even learned yet.

Yes. I will look into those. Thank u! And I understand that, I just want to try my best. Ill try to learn it and then if I'm confident enough ill register for the test in November/December.
