I had a couple of questions regarding summer research opportunities. First, does the name of the institution that you're doing research at matter? Also, are research internship programs over the summer even worth it at all? I understand that they're very competitive but I don't know if it is worth it to apply to any.

Name has some level of importance, but is not as important as what you personally contribute to the project and whether the research is hypothesis-driven.

Specific research internships are preferable over working in a random lab, due to the competitive nature and also because there is often a more formal mentorship component.

This is separate from the question of how to best utilize your time this semester. If you're super busy and don't have time to apply for specific research internships then that's a valid reason not to.
