I am currently a rad attending about 8 years out of training. Have career disatisfaction.

I was wondering if it is possible/practical to switch into FM at this point? Would getting a residency in a metro be realistic where I currently live? Would I get any credit for my experience including internship? Is the residency grueling because I am not so young anymore? Can family medicine provide professional autonomy and ability to join an independent practice- things I am currently missing?

I don't feel like anyone but the attendings around here are qualified to advise you on this. But I wonder, what is it about Radiology that you are dissatisfied with? Also, what in Family Medicine do you find attractive? Generally people either understand what FM is about and respect it, or they hate dealing with people, or they just can't handle the lack of perceived prestige.

Radiology and FM (to me) seem like fields that would attract polar opposite type of personalities. Stereotypically, Radiology gets the folks who don't want to spend a lot of time in direct patient care, while FM gets the folks who like counseling patients and don't mind a lot of direct patient care (there are obviously plenty of exceptions). Did you find that your goals/interests didn't line up with radiology like you thought they might?
