Hi all,
This is a great forum.

I am IT professional giving some thought to becoming a dentist.
I am going to be conducting an informational interview with my dentist in a couple of days. I am planning on interviewing a few other dentists as well.
My goal is to get some initial insight if this job is right for me.
I've been reading this forum and have culled together a pretty good list of questions about the business, school, rewards, challenges, etc. I pulled some questions from an excellent thread here started by a seasoned dentist, with the topic of helping people explore if dentistry is a fit.

My question is can anyone share or point me to a list of questions that they have used in a similar capacity? What would you or have you asked a seasoned dentist in an informational, career-exploration interview setting?

Thanks,

-Brian

you could try asking the dentist to shadow for a few hours on a saturday morning to see if YOU would like doing wat the dentist would be doing.... I think that would be the best thing you can do for yourself...

as for questions:
1. Do you like your job?
2. Would you go back and change it if you could? and why?
3. How are your hours?
4. Do you make enough to pay off your debt and still live comfortably?
5. What do you hate the most about your job?
6. What do you like the most?
7. Can I shadow you for a few hours on a saturday to get a feel for wat it's like?

When did you know that you wanted to be a dentist?
What inspired you? (might be similar answers)
Why/Why not specialty?

Also, if you're shadowing, be sure to shadow specialist as well. I worked as a volunteer dental assistant at a non-profit dental clinic and we saw like everything, but many general dentistry offices don't do things like root canals.

Thanks! Shadowing is a great idea.
I know some newer dentists have practices open on Saturdays.
Maybe shadowing could lead to Saturday dental assistant position.
Then again, they might want to have someone for the week. We'll see.
