Hello. I originally posted this in DO forum but wanted to get all med student parent opinions on this. I am currently finishing my bachelor 's in biology and currently interested in goof th PharmD route, mainly because of my two children. I have heard pharm school andmed school are similar in difficulty and time commitment (which I tend to question....). However, becoming a physician has always been where my passion lies and it is difficult to let go of. Anyways, I was hoping some fellow parents who are undertaking med school could share your experiences with me. What is it like being a parent and going through med school? Would you do it again? Are you concerned about residency and does being a parent influence which area you want to go into? Thank you!

It is absolutely doable. In our class of 60 there are 4 of us with kids. Two of us have 1-year-olds, and two have kids between toddler and high school age. I know I don't have any illusions of being at the very top of the class, but I'm not drowning, either. There are sacrifices. Right now I commute to a different city for school. I live there M-F and go home on weekends. It's tough, but my wife and I know it's temporary and is necessary. I will be a better dad if I'm happy in my career; I'll be a better role model as well.

Regarding PharmD vs MD, you should do what YOU want to do. If you go the PharmD route, and really wanted to be an MD, you will always regret it. The dedication to train for either career is too long and tough to sell yourself short.
