Questions or advice about UCSF?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UCSBPre-Med1:
You could hear around March 15th, but it would be much more likely in April. They do begin sending out more acceptances about this time of the year (March-May) than they did earlier (Dec-Feb). They do want as many as possible to be able to attend the second look weekend in April (at least it was in April last year).

Arginine:
I also am sorry to hear about this big disappointment. Please do not think of yourself as any sort of failure or that you will be less of a physician because you did not get into your top choice. Equally good physicians and academics come out of all of the other med schools as well. The last thing I would mention is that most (if not all) of us at UCSF were rejected by other medical schools as well. There is some randomness in this and it should not change your perception of who you are (neither inflated or deflated).

This is a question for the UCSFers: What is your social life like as a med student at UCSF and what do you all do for fun? Is there time?

antoniop:

looks like you will be hanging out with high schoolers smoking a cigarette and paying bums to get you liquor. Seriously, SF is an awesome spot with plethora of activities for any type of individual. Don't worry about your social life...

Question: have people received post interview rejections/wait-lists for the month of March from UCSF and when was it post-marked?

Two questions for any kind helpers:
1) Are interview invites for the regular SF program over by now? I've been on 'hold' since January but haven't heard anything.

2) Wondering how many people that get into the UCB-UCSF JMP are off the waitlist?

Thanks, g'luck UCSF-lovers!

Question for UCSFer's,

When applying for both MD/Phd and MD only, do adcoms conduct both processes simultaneously? Or do adcoms first delay reviewing/interviewing an applicant for MD only until after an applicant gets rejected for the MD/Phd program?

Thanks a bunch.

the md and mstp processes are simultaneous and not related. like harvard and rochester - have to get into each completeyly seperately without help from either comittee.

Hi there,
I feel like this question has probably been asked a million times already, but UCSF is definitely my 1st choice. I know that once you have interviewed somewhere, you have a better chance of influencing decisions (wink) if you are contacting them. But I have not received an interview yet and wondered if there is still anything I can be doing to convince them that I should come. Thanks a lot! Congrats to the lucky ones!

anybody knows until when they are inviting?😕

From UCSF SOM:

The files are being reviewed presently, we will be interviewing until
about 3/20

are they reviewing the people in the hold pile or still reviewing others' files? or do you know?!

march 20th is not too far away 🙁 maybe i will make some sort of desperate attempt to get an interview! hmm... what could i do?

I assume it's the 'hold' files they are reviewing, but you can call or email...they're pretty prompt in reply.

What can you do? hmmmm
You could call them up and tell them you have another interview up north (there's only one other) and you will be in the area. If that doesn't work, just walk into their admissions office, and tell them you've been scheduled for an interview. You can figure out how the rest goes. laugh:

I spoke to Kathy Ryan, sweeties!

They hope to finish interviews by March 20th.

Good luck!

SDN ate my posting again.... It's MSword for me from now on...
I know there has been some disappointment about the outcomes of admissions as of late... In brief, I wanted to reinterate that UCSF is a great place for some people, but it's not the be-all end-all. When I think about the places I interviewed at, I would've been happy anywhere because really, the most important thing is at the end, with hard work, I will get my MD and be able to practice medicine!! It's passion that will lead to success--not where you are, or your collegues as much.

And remember, admissions are very random... Every whittling process for the admissions committee is stressful.. but they try their best... but they're human--great humans, but not perfect. Sometimes they make mistakes... Sometimes, they highly respect and cherish particular applicants but feel (sometimes mistakingly, that UCSF isn't the best place for them)... Sometimes, even if you're an ultra unique 37 woman who has been a practicing modern artist... with three kids and a farm in main... someone who's already accepted is just like that on paper and in interview!! Or maybe they didn't like the name--when one is stiffing through thousands of outstanding applications, oftentimes the process does become a little arbituary...

Also remember, UCSF really really wants the 500 people they interview especially. When interviewees come here, we're recruiting them! But they can't take everyone... but they try.. They also know that the ones that don't get in will likely get into some other really really great place ...

BUT REMEMBER-- It's all about passion... Be passionate about medicine and your life and path in life, and you'll never have to regret or yearn for something you don't have. You'll always be happy and successful that way, I promise. Be thankful for the opportunities you've worked for/had, and realize that most things are for the better. even if they don't seem like it.

and lastly, each and every one of you are brilliant, hard-working, and beautiful people inside. Always rmember that. Being pre-med, applying to medical school, the willingness to devote your life to medicine--I admire that strength and integrity in you all, and realize it will take you great places that need you!!!

Lots of love and support,
Bien

just wondering...if they hope to be done interviewing by 3/20 does that mean there is basically no hope for anyone right now on hold???? i guess it is just better to know that to not know even if it is bad news.

i e-mailed the admissions office, and they told me that they wouldn't be pulling many from the hold list this year 🙁 she said that if we are selected we should be hearing very soon or something like that. basically it didn't sound too good.

UCSFgirl--

Does that mean that they will start sending out post-interview decisions soon? I hope so, this wait is killing me!

Thanks!

Hi All,
So is it basically much harder to get in if you are not from Cali? UCSF sounds great, but I just didn't know how all that works...
thanks.

Hi jfksenior,
Because of state regulations and the degree of in-state competitiveness, the UCSF (and most UC's, too) admissions commmittee sets higher standards for out-of-state applicants. But if you feel like you'd be a good fit at the school, go for it regardless of your state residency! 🙂

For UCSFGirl, Paean, Souljah, KyleLuman, or any other UCSF MS'ers
Thanks so much for all your help and guidance. It's students like you that make UCSF Med such an amazing and friendly community.
I was hoping someone could answer this question: What kind of clinical research opportunities are there for current M1's? Is it very hard to find time or faculty sponsors during the academic year?
Thanks in advance!

First of all, thanks for the compliment, although it isn't necessary to do so if you want to ask us questions 😉

There is tons of clinical research available here for MS1s. Currently, I am not doing any research, but I think we have plenty of time in our schedule to pursue some sort of research project. We have atleast a couple of afternoons free each week, and our exams are spaced out pretty well. Honestly, I've had semesters in undergrad that were much more demanding. I'm not saying that it is easy, but I do think it is structured and organized in a way that allows me to spend less time trying to process and synthesize information. I'm sure the P/F system doesn't hurt either 😉 I think the only year where things would prove difficult as far as maintaining research is concerned would be during the third year. People sort of disappear for a while.

A little on the summer between first and second year...

During the summer (between 1st and 2nd year) it is very easy to get a research grant in order to get involved with research that excites you. I know people who are going to do, or are already doing, research at San Francisco General in the ED, someone who is going to get involved in some Cardiovascular research, and lots of people that are interested in Neuroscience/Neurosurgery. I also know of someone who will spend the summer traveling to six countries in order to do a study on access and quality of healthcare. There is lots to do here, and they are pretty good about providing you with economic means. Most people approached a professor or a physician and set up a meeting. Amazingly, professors and physicians here love to teach, and most of them get pretty excited to see a student who is genuinely interested in their field.

In addition to research, a lot of students are getting directly involved in the many clinics that are run by UCSF students, and quite a few of my classmates will be spending their summer precepting with physicians in rural California communities, in the city, or in other countries such as Mexico, Cuba, China, etc.

And then there are students like myself, who will be working on the curriculum this summer. Lots of students do this, whether it involves creating an online module, writing an independent learning module for the incoming class, or preparing cases for small groups and pbl. I'm going to be (hopefully) preparing some small group and independent learning module material for the Nutrition and Metabolism block for our upcoming year.

Finally, there are those of us who will be doing absolutely nothing academic during our summer. I'll be doing this too, for about a month. I plan on lounging around with my fiance, going on roadtrips, spending time with family, and getting outdoors.

I know you specifically asked about clinical research, but I wanted to also let you know of the many other options that are available.

Souljah is absolutely correct (as usual 🙂

The possible research opportunities are quite varied. They really depend on your previous experience and abilities. If you have experience doing basic science research then you will find it quite easy to do that again, if you can analyze your own dataset, then faculty will jump at the opportunity to work with you doing that. If you want to learn to do something new, that is also possible, but opportunities would be a little fewer, but still available.

We (the first year class) have probably received about 5 e-mails from faculty who are looking for students to help out with specific studies (some more clinical than others). Some have funding, some do not, some can be done in the summer, some would like a longer commitment. If you are actively looking, you will certainly find something, the only problem will be narrowing down the field.

The school also funds first year med students the summer before classes begin to do some research if they are interested. I think they funded everyone (or almost everyone) that applied last summer. That could assist you in getting started and it is definitely possible to continue during the first and second years, although it would be necessary to have a flexible mentor (our schedule does change quite a bit).

Hey UCSFers--

Another question for you guys. 😀

I was wondering if what was said earlier in this thread was true, that they are going to finish interviewing in late March?

If so, do you think that this will speed up post-interview decisions? Thanks a lot guys.

Hello!

It seems UCSF will stop interviewing 3-20, but that prob wouldn't speed up the selection process that much more. It still takes about 8-10 weeks post-interview--but there's a lot of factors that effect this... how many subcommittees need to see your app, if your interviewer misses a lot of committee meetings (they can't talk about you if your interviewers aren't there to represent).

Souljah and Kyle are such knowledge masters, huh? You guys see them in anatomy lab!! =) Anyhoo, I wanted to add a bit about the research here. UCSF doesn't have an undergrad campus so the faculty here is looking for students rather than students looking for them. Kyle is right about us getting numerous emails asking for students, and they is a student research office/advisor here who can help you personally. In addition, faculty will be especially receptive to you because you are a medical student (think about what you went through to get there--implies some sort of preserverance and character, ya know!). Most people I kno just flip through the research faculty database we have available to us, email the professor/doctor and they're in... Most most often, with funding!!

Our class as a whole doesn't seem to devote their afterschool tiem to research persay, but those who are interested are waiting for summer. Personally, I'm planning on taking a year off b/w third and fourth year to do research because I really want to give it my all. We do have a lot of free time, and I'm using it to get involved in lots of extracurriculars because I want to use school time to work with my peers on community projects while people are around (in contrast to the summertime). I know several second-years, however, who are doing research... many of them because they're still hooked on the research project they started summer after their first year!! =)

UCSF is known for its research and its research faculty, and it tries very hard ot get its medical students invovled. If it doesn't seem a lot of medical students are invovled in research it definately isn't because funding, advising, time, or receptive faculty isn't available, but because students here often choose to do community/international work. The school really tries to recruit us, tho, you'll see!!

Good luck everyone!
Lots of love,
Bien😍

Interviews are definately winding down, there are fewer applicants to take on tours these days. However, if I had to guess, I'd say that the timeframs for hearing back will be the same as it was before. But remember, I'm not on the admissions committee, so no definitive answers. I believe letters are going out in about a week, hopefully good news for some of you... If you are accepted, I want to put in another plug for re-visit weekend. Come and find a roommate, or meet your new classmates and decide you like it so much that you withdraw everywhere else.😉

In about a week?

OMG, I can't wait to hear...you don't know, I've been having dreams about UCSF, all I can think about is that school. I hope I get in soooooooooooooo bad!!!!!😀

mention another school you've gotten into?

at my interview i told ucsf that they were my first choice and that although i had already received acceptance at another uc school, i would still go to ucsf if i got in.

does anyone know how the adcom handles this? i thought they might take it as showing how much i am interested in them, but maybe they will take it as "this applicant already got in somewhere, so we don't need to accept him/her"

???

In the packet give to you on interview day, the dean clearly states that if you are interviewing at UCSF, you probably will be getting into medical school somewhere. So I doubt it will be much of a surprise to anyone if you say that. However, making such a statement might come across as arogant. Almost as a challenge that UCSF accept you as well. Guess just a word of caution if someone else thinks about this.

Overall, don't worry about what you said in an interview. If you do that you will have an ulcer before the season is out. What's done, is done. Just relax, especially since you already got into a school.

just wondering since it is 3/14 is there no way to get an interview if the last interview day is on 3/20...or is this the last day that they invite???? just wondering b/c i was kind of unclear about that. thanks!

Hi sweeties!!

I agree with what's been said--UCSF knows if you can get into their school, you can get into toehr schools too. It might not be in your best interst to mention that--I don't think it was have the effect that you intend. Besides, on May15, all the medical schools will know where you got in, and where you were rejected--they will still offer you a spot (if you're waitlisted) even though by May 15, you've picked one school. They call/email the other school to inform them that they're offeirng oyu a spot, and you're offered a spot still even though you got in and accepted another school.

I've heard from mnay people that it's not good to reapply to medical school just so you can get into a better school. If you think about it, it might seem to some people that you're "asking for too much." If you're truly passionate about medical school, it doesn't matter where you go--right? Same thing with mentioning that even though you've gotten in elsewhere, you'd still rather go to UCSF.

Of course, mentioning UCSF is your first choice for X , Y, and Z is perfectly acceptable and will help you!!

Good luck kiddos!!! and come see me!! =)

Bien 😍

When do we start hearing about scholarships? Also, is there a Regents Scholar program?

though i have some regrets about making this statement, i did not in any way say it to be arrogant. in fact, i believe my interviewer asked me if i had gotten into any other schools at which point i told him, adding that i would still go to ucsf if i got in.

but it is right that i should not worry so much about things said in an interview. i've already lost sleep and probably gotten a few ulcers as it is from the whole process.

btw, i saw in another thread you mentioned you got into cornell--congrats, you lucky dawg! so you still going to ucsf??

Well it's 3/15. Maybe we'll hear from UCSF in a few days... did anyone see the adcom people hauling big bags of mail out of the office today? 🙂

I'm so anxious :scared:

I'm gonna be waiting with you too, koolkao. When did you interview?

I interviewed on 1/15, I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER!

UCSF! UCSF! UCSF! 😀

well, today is the end of the 8th post-interview week for you!

I interviewed a bit later on 1/29. But I'm hoping to hear from them this cycle. Otherwise the suspense of another month of waiting will be too much for me! In fact, since I'm on the East coast I asked a friend in the Bay Area to send me a blank letter on Monday so that I can get a sense of the delivery time (so I know when to stop obsessivelt checking the mailbox)...

good luck UCSBPre-Med1!

Right back at ya, koolkao! 😀

Just to let you guys know-

Letters went out 3/14. I live in SF and received mine today 3/15. I interviewed 1/30 so you may hear in less than 8 weeks.

Good luck everyone who is waiting!

thanks for the info lll505. I won't be able to sleep tonight...

🙂

OMG! Are you serious?

My mail goes to my parents house in NorCal...probably will come on Monday if I get in!

*crossing fingers*!

wow, i thought i was obsessed... keke... 😉 j/k. i noticed ucsf is pretty exact with their timelines (ie, i heard from them exactly 8 weeks after turning in my secondary, exactly x weeks after submitting amcas, etc). good luck!

I interviewed in mid Feb so I don't expect a response this early, but it would be awfully nice if I got a fat envelope tomorrow.

I suppose one more month of waiting won't kill me (after all, we are 9 months into the process). I'll get through it as long as I have my large stash of chocolate covered raisins from Costco. 😀

Good luck to all the SDNers who are expecting to hear back this week!

lll505, big congrats! For those of you who have received the wonderful news, did you notice if the online status page was also updated before you received the snail mail (i.e. are updates posted online post-interview)?? Thanks!

No luck today with an acceptance... 🙁

UCSFers, do you know if they mail all acceptances for the month on one day, or over a few days?

I really hope its the latter, because I didn't get my acceptance today, and they started mailing them on the 14th! My address is in-state, so I should have gotten it if they mail on only one day.

Nefertari-

The online status check does not get updated post interview. Mine still says "Congratulations, you have been selected to interview on..."

UCSB-

I'm not sure if they take a couple of days but I do know they don't send out rejections/waitlist during the middle of the month when acceptances go out.

Good luck you guys, I'm crossing my fingers for ya 🙂

Well I was trying to think positively. I don't want a rejection or waitlist!

Not to worry UCSBPre-Med1...I received my acceptance from UCSF 3-4 days after it should have arrived. I live in Cali, and my letter was postmarked Dec. 17...So it should have arrived by Dec.19, right? But it actually arrived Dec. 23. Strange things can happen in the mail. 😉 I was bummed out when I didn't receive anything on the 19th, but then I got a great surprise a few days later. There's still a lot of hope! Good luck! 🙂

OMG OMG!!!

THank you!

I was starting to get sad...but you just made my day! Where where did they send your acceptance letter (like where in Cali)?

lll505, thanks! That's probably better for us psychologically that they don't post it on the online status. Since UCLA did that last fri, we've been going OCD over on the UCLA thread!

Hope you'll hear this week, UCSB!

I live in Claremont...General LA area. Hang in there!! 🙂

anyone get off hold for interview recently? i guess those of use who didn't are SOL, huh?

i was wondering the same thing lola...does anyone know if it is still possible?????

acceptance received on the east coast yesterday!
