UPDATES

I totally agree with Souljah. Awards, jobs, grades, new projects/positions at an old job, volunteer experiences. I'd be wary about travelling experiences for pleasure, however, because it doesn't really add "substance" to your application and may seem like you're trying too hard to find things to put down (I could be totally wrong, but just in case you get really conservative people on your committee). If you're travelling somewhere to volunteer, for education, for missionary purposes, then that would definately be something I'd mention =) Really, though, I would make decisions for what to write on an update on a case-by-case basis... Ask yourself what it is that you want to show the committee with what you're adding to your application, and, if this makes any sense, if it warrents their consideration... Just make sure it's something important (so if there is a whole whole lot, try to prioritize) or you'll risk sounding desperate.

If you have nothing to add, a letter of intent is still appropriate =) UCSF looks for people who really want to be here and even more importantly, would be happy as a UCSF student (do your past experiences, interests, hobbies, passions fit in with what UCSF has to offer?). I think I did mention a few particular things about UCSF that made it especially and personally attractive to me. I've heard arguments for why one should or why one should not mention proximity to family, but I personally included it. Significant others, unless engaged or married, I'd be a lot more cautious about. But, really, I'm sure from when you submitted your application to now, there has to be something you can add. I wrote about a new project I picked up in my lab, new findings in my current project... some new positions I acquired, some conferences I went to, things that I'd published (abstracts are great... and remember everytime you're presenting at a conference, your adbstract is in the program! that counts!!). It was a big research year for me =P

WAITING
Souljah is right. I'm the expert on waiting! I didn't get in until June after receving my invite in October. There's a lot of factors: if there are disputes about your status, your case may have to go through more committees or undergo an appeal process... if your interviewee isn't there when your case comes up at the meeting, they can't talk about you. Don't worry about it!! If you haven't heard in a few months, I'd call and just politely say you're really excited about UCSF, haven't heard in X weeks, and just wondering if a decision had been made yet. =) Don't ever be pushy!! They'll remember =) hehehe

If you're on high priority, you won't hear until May 15. The whole point of that list is to give those interviewing later a fair chance--they will rank you at that time. Remember to get any additional letters of rec or updates in BEFORE they rank! =)

I don't know if January letters have gone out. Last year, they sent out a batch on the 1st, and another on the 15th.. One date tended to be acceptances, the other tended to be non-acceptances (not rejections necessarily). I will ask.

Take care everyone!!! =)

GOOD LUCK and a big fat hug!

Bien

Dear UCSBPre-Med1,

Keep in touch!! Of course I remember you! Hope to see you here next year, please keep me updates and contact me if you have any other questions. BTW, are you from UCLA? I am too--you NEED to come here & represent!! Only four of us here (lousy premed there, yah?)

Take care!!

Bien

It was great meeting you there.

Everyone at UCSF seems so nice. I really hope I get in.

I go to UC Santa Barbara though, not UCLA.

Thanks for all your help and advice, at the interview and on this forum! 😀

this is questions from a friend:

"hi, i haven't been accepted to ucsf or anything, but i was just wondering if ucsf granted deferrals to students. i won a fellowship to study chinese in china and i'd like to defer a year. what cases does ucsf allow deferrals?"

Yes.
In fact, coicidentally, I have an awesome awesome classmate that deferred and spent a year studying in china. =)

Good luck!

Bien

Hi everyone!!

Consulted my source to verify when letters are sent out. Admission letters are sent out once a month on the 15th or so. Rejections, holds, high priorities are sent out as the decisions are made. The committee meets once a month to talk about cases that aren't "clear-cut."

My source suggested that if you haven't heard in a month or so, to write a letter expressing your strong interest in UCSF.

Hope this helps!! Keep the questions comin'

Hugs,
Bien =)

Hey --

Email me at my UCSF address. I want to know how your interview went.

Thanks!!
Bien

Hey Bien,

It's your UCLA buddy, Jack. You've started a very popular thread here. I wish I still could use it, but I just got my UCSF rejection last saturday. I'm glad you're having such a great time at UCSF!

ill make sure to remember your id ucsf girl.......
i went to berkeley undergrad so if you want know some chill places to hang out at in the bay area, i might be able to tell of some places 😉

congrats on your acceptance and hope you kick ass.......

Hey Jack,

Good to hear from you! What is your contact these days? Anyhow, love it here... You should appeal. If done about a week or so after the rejection, you still have a good chance.

Good luck! Get in touch with me if you need more info... I'll be in LA this weekend =)

Take care and good luck
Bien

Has anyone received any post-interview news from UCSF in January?

Anxiously Waiting Here 😱

No news for me. Interviewed first week of December and also anxiously waiting. 😱

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think someone on the "UC Applicants Update...." thread said s/he called the admissions office and the letters probably won't be mailed out until next week.....

oi, the suspense...good luck everyone!!

hi---i haven't gotten an interview yet but ucsf is my 1st choice by far(as I am sure it is for most people)...i was put on hold for a possible interview and i got that letter about 3 months ago...i still haven't heard a thing. what are the chances of getting an interview at this point? b/c i am not in school i can't send an update with my grades and nothing has reallly changed since my amcas b/c i am still working at the same job...is there anything i can do to get an interview???

I don't think it can hurt to write a letter that tells them that they are your number one choice. I don't think it will be nearly as effective as a letter written post-interview, but I don't think it will hurt your chances at all. Definitely can't hurt. The fact that they put you on hold means that you are 'on the fence', which is much better than a rejection letter (plenty of those have been sent out). We are well into our interview season, but there is still a lot to be decided. If you can put together a nice, short, sincere letter that states that UCSF is your first choice, along with any updates, I would do it.

Hope that helps.

Souljah.

I am not a UCSF student and didn't even apply there, but I just wanted to say that reading through this thread is quite inspiring. Just to know that there are people enjoying their medical education so much is great. As a NY resident (w/ mediocre stats), I didn't even entertain my dream of applying to and attending UCSF. I know residency is a whole different world, but it still offers me some hope for the possibility of ending up in SF at some point... or maybe a clinical rotation.

Anyways, the point of this jumble is that I'm jealous of all you UCSFers, but its nice to see that you all appreciate the opportunity to be there so much. Hopefully I'll run into you all one way or another in the future...

Dear Nygirl,

I agree with Souljah. Although we are well into our interviewing season, we have classmates that did not interview until late March. I think I know someone who interviewed in April as well! As souljah suggested a letter stating UCSF is your top choice could help plenty. May I also suggest updating your application directly to UCSF and sending in any additional material you think would help. Good luck!!

Take care,
Bien

Dear JMD.

Thanks for your kind words. I am sorry to hear you did not apply here! UCSF is a great place, but, really, you can be happy anywhere! Hopefully we'll meet in the future =)

Good luck,
Bien

Hey beautiful Bien--

Check your UCSF email!

hi everyone,

I spoke with Deborah of admissions today, and she said that January acceptances will be mailed out tomorrow. She wouldn't say how many, but that it was a lot more than december. Check your mailboxes, and good luck!!!

thanks for the update jabroni!
hope everyone gets big envelopes in their mailboxes this/next week!

Thanks Jabroni, you're the Bomb!

Hey UCSF Supporters!

I interviewed Dec. 20th ... realistically when do you think I should hear from them? Should I hang around the mailbox this week or not even think about it?

antoniop,

realistically, most people do not hear from them for atleast 8 weeks. so, i would expect to hear (at the earliest) between 2/15-2/20. you could hear earlier, but rarely do people get a response in under 6 weeks. i have a few classmates that heard in about 6 weeks, but most waited atleast 8. i'd keep my eyes open for any big envelopes in the mail during the next few days (can't hurt), but i wouldn't be disappointed if nothing shows up. they take a while to make their decisions, which i think ultimately makes for a better class. if you don't hear anything by february, i'd give the admin office a call and inquire about the status of your application, just to make sure nothing was sent that wasn't received. last year, lots of acceptances were given out in february and march, even into april and may. i hope you hear from them this month, but expect to wait a little longer. i know, waiting sucks, but you'll know sooner or later.

Good luck everyone!!

Ditto with what souljah said about waiting. I had friends last year who waited >12 weeks for an outright offer (that is, they weren't high priority first). On the other hand, this year I interviewed 11/18 and heard 12/18, so it is possible (but needless to say I was very surprised). I also think this year the timeline may be a little faster for the entire process because there aren't as many issues with AMCAS. It also probably depends on how fast your interviewers do your evaluations.

Does anyone know if UCSF has sent out post-interview rejections or "hold" notifications? Or do they do those at the end?

I GOT IN!!!! IT"S A MIRACLE!!!

congrats trix!

by the way, when was the letter postmarked? i'm crossing my fingers that i will get good news from them in the mail tomorrow!

Thank you so much! The rather large envelope was postmarked yesterday, 1/21.

I have to go call some more people...

Well done, Trix!

You must be on cloud 9 🙂

Congrats Trix! That's really awesome  🙂

Woohoo! Congrats Trix! That is a true accomplishment. I only hope for the same fate. 🙂

Contratulations to all of you who have been accepted to UCSF. From everything you guys say it must be an amazing place. I recently received an invite for a secondary (which was a bit surprising and made me really happy). I was wondering if a letter of update and intent (since it's my first choice) is appropriate now or if I should wait until I hopefully get an interview to send this stuff. Thanks for your advice🙂

  Way to go Trix!

And congrats to all others who get their Jan's admits!

In the secondary it says you can attach up to two additional sheets indicating updates. I did this, putting it in resume form and writing a paragraph describing each bullet point. If you already turned in your secondary, I am sure you can still add this. Most people have said letters of intent are more important post interview, but I doubt it can hurt before.

Congratulations Trix!! Welcome to the family.

yay.......trix :hardy:

Hoping to join the happy family soon...Wish me luck.

Z.

Yah Trix!!! Hope I get the chance to see you there.

Hi Trix!!

Congrats on the good news everyone has been hearing!!! =) UCSF is really an amazing place--Souljah totally got it right when he called us all a family! I'm so eager to meet every each and one of you. Make sure you introduce yourself to me (or I may introduce myself to you!) =)

If anyone is going to be in the area and needs a more underground tour or just wants to hang out with us, let me kno!

Take care and congrats!

Bien =) who knows I may be your big sib! hehehe

To all those still waiting, updates and letters of intent never never hurt! =) Good luck!

wow... it's awesome that all of you are so tight... I might be joining the family next fall... just got my acceptance yesterday. I'll definitely be back for a revisit.

Hi All!
I just got the good news from UCSF. I am so excited! I thought that I was going to be in it for the long hall, but my wishes were granted today. I hope to get to know all you and thanks to the UCSF students for seeing the applicants through this process.

Congrats to Trix, sdnsdn, Dr. Dodger Dog!!!

You folks must be awesome people! I'll be interviewing at UCSF in Feb. and even for that, I'm in a bit of shock. I'll probably pass out if one day they tell me I'm in (not a great quality for a doctor wannabe, huh?)

I also want to thank the UCSF students for giving us applicants so much support. Maybe I'll see some of you next month. Lee should make SDN stickers so we can identify fellow SDNers. ^_^

Congrats to Dodger dog and sdnsdn!!

This is all so exciting!, I am still kind of floating around like it's all a dream and I will wake up soon.

And, souljah you are right, it does seem like a family! I can't wait to meet you all in the Fall

Hey guys, this is a simple question.

For you that interviewed and were accepted (and for souljah and UCSFgirl) when do you think I can expect to hear any news if I interviewed on Jan. 15?

I know that it has only been a week, but I just want to know when I can expect anything. March? Or am I talking even longer than that?

Also, if I interviewed when I did (Jan. 15) do you still think I have a chance of getting in, or is that considered "late" at UCSF?

Thanks a lot guys, and cograts to those who were accepted.

It is possible that you will hear by Feb 15th, but you're more likely to be in the March 15th group. Once your interviewers write up their report, they send it to the admisssion committee, everything in your app is quantified, a number is calculated, and it gets reviewed again by another committee, then a decision is made.

And, if you interview at UCSF at all you definitely have a realistic chance of getting in. They only interview about 500-550 people and send out about 300-350 acceptances, so if you get an interview you are more likely to get in than not! 🙂 I don't think January is late at all because UCSF interviews until April, so it's about the middle of the process for them.

The scariest part is the waiting, but the only thing you can do is make sure they know you want to go there with a LOI.

Good luck UCSBPre-Med1, my fingers are crossed for you!!

Congrats to all who have been accepted so far, you guys undoubtedly deserve it!🙂 As for me, I interviewed around 10/15 (over 3 months ago) and haven't heard anything yet. I sent an LOI last week. I'm starting to get a little anxious. Do you think that something was sent to me, but I never got it in the mail? I'll call and check in February.

jabroni, if I were you, I'd call on Monday.

Its been way longer than 8 weeks, so I think a call to the Admissions office is justified. Go ahead and do it, and tell us what they say. Good luck!

jabroni -as a few of us have said previously in this thread, it usually takes 8-12 weeks to hear something back from them, but many of us (including myself) had to wait more than that to hear back from them (outright acceptances included). jabroni, i'd give a call and just see if something was mailed that wasn't accidently lost or something, but it is pretty normal to have to wait a little more than 12 weeks. there are so many factors that all have to come together in order to make a final decision, and very often it will be one thing holding the process up. who knows what the reason is, but rest assurred that your application is being looked at.

trix - the 300-350 acceptances thing is a little high, atleast historically. usually around 190 or so outright acceptances are granted and about 100 high priorities. of the high priorities, anywhere from 25 to 50 or so usually get off the list.

bananasplit - don't worry, you are definitely interviewing for a spot in our class, whether it be as a result of an outright acceptance or off the waitlist. i remember last year that in march only about half of the acceptances were given out. come here with a smile and enthusiasm, show us your best, and you'll be just fine. i know some schools who interview people in february are often interviewing for spots on the waitlist, but that is NOT the case here at UCSF. you do your thing and you have just a good a shot as anyone of getting an acceptance. best of luck!

Hi All,
Thank you for sharing so much information and enthusiasm! I have to admit that I am a bit ignorant of some details about UCSF. I hope you can help.

1. I hate a admit it but...Unlike the other schools I have visited, with UCSF I did not want to know what I would be missing should I not get in. (Considering the caliber of students, I felt honored just to get an interview.)
I was wondering if you could share your experiences with the ?new curriculum.? Is UCSF rolling out a newer version for the incoming class of 2007, or will it be the same as the class of 2006? Do you have any personal experiences that you would like to share? I understand that it is unique and flexible, but I am having trouble filling in the details.

2. I went to UCLA as an undergrad. (Hi UCSFgirl!) Although the education is wonderful, the support of students there is not great. Basically, it is sink or swim and I have known many bright students that have been lost in the shuffle. Since UCSF is a state school, I am concerned that it may be similar. That is really not a problem for me since I am not shy about finding resources, but I was hoping to hear that things were different. With matching and boards, the support structure seems even more important.

Thanks again for your time and great support.

Sorry if this has been addressed already but, is there subsidized housing for med students what about med students with families?
