1. Which of the following subshells is lowest in energy?
a. 5f b. 4s c. 3d d. 6s e. 5p

2. In an atom with many electrons, which of the following orbitals would be highest in energy?
a. 4f b. 4p c. 6d d. 7s e. 8g

Answers were b and c respectively....a little confused to be honest...i can see how #1 makes sense, but then #2 would throw me for a loop

Let's consider the order of the electron configuration. Keep in mind this ordering is experimentally determined. 1s2s2p3s3p4s3d4p5s4d5p6s4f5d6p7s5f6d7p. For the first question the answer is 4s. The second question the answer is 8g. For the DAT exam, the furthest you will need to go out is 4d. Thus the only order to remember for the DAT exam is 1s2s2p3s3p4s3d4p5s4d.

Hope this helps.
