So far I have:

1. Why did you get into dentistry?
2. How do you like dentistry?
3. What do you think the toughest things about running a private practice?
4. Any dental school study tricks that came in handy while you were in school?
5. What do you think the cons about a career in dentistry are?
6. What do you think the future of dentistry is?

Feel free to add your own. 🙂

I think a thread like this will come in handy for predental students in the future.

Did being a dentist help with your sex life?
How much money do you make annually?
Do you ever regret not becoming a doctor?
How do you feel on Dentists having the highest suicide rates?
What did you get on your DAT?
What is your net worth?
What is your handicap?
Do you party a lot?
Are your feet tired?...becuase you've been running through my mind all day.

Lol, maybe save a few of those questions unless he/she is really laid-back. 😀

I've shadowed a couple dentists and I feel if I were them, I'd be reallly annoyed, plus really awkward, if I was asked "why did you become a dentist" and "do you have any tips for dental school" and whatnot. Put yourself in their shoes... they're people too. They're not geeks who do nothing but dentistry, and they may even want to have a fresh face in the office to keep them off the monotonous work. Many have been working for over 30 years!

One dentist I shadowed was realllly into golf, so I spent like the first day talking about dentistry with these stupid questions, and it was really awkward. We then spent the remaining 3 weeks chatting about golf and REAL stuff. It was not like I was talking to some professor, it was like I was talking to a friend/co-worker. I threw in questions about what he was doing and stuff occasionally, but I wasn't just being an annoying guy standing there asking a billion questions with a notepad and pencil in my hand.

You're gonna be shadowing them for a long time, you don't need these threads to help you know what to talk about. Use your interpersonal skills... dentists are people too. Although the only female dentist I shadowed was like 60, I think it'd be much easier to shadow a dentist of the opposite sex, particularly if they're attractive. Makes the day go by MUCH faster I'd assume, and makes the small talk all the more interesting too.
