I was wondering why people in this section thinks it bad to go to medical school in the Caribbean.

Also what are the graduate rate? is it harder than U.S schools? I mean there has to be a trade off for accepting more students right?

People in this section WANT to go and some ARE going to Caribbean medical schools!!! We don't think it's a bad thing at all!!!

1. theres a stigma attached with going to an offshore med program (justified or unjustified)
2. from what i hear, its tougher to get into competitive residencies. There are people who get tough residencies from caribs (i.e. neurosurg, anesth, etc), however, you have to do exceptionally well in school and on your boards. If as us md candidate and you were vying for a spot and you both had identical scores, the nod most likely would go to the us md candidate.
3. dont worry about graduation, if you can handle a medical curriculum, then you shouldnt worry about graduating. The high attrition rate is most likely due to the caribs accepting a large number of people who are not ready for a rigorous medical education.

For people like me who screwed up in undergrad, or people who did well in undergrad but did poorly on the MCATs, the caribs are the most promising alternative toward pursuing a career in medicine. Do your research on the schools out there and prepare yourself to work hard if you are going down the carib path. Best of luck

The stigma is there, and you must be prepared to defend your decision to everybody. One of the doctors I work with greeted me with a strong "Oh! Well you will be able to practice in Barbados" when I told him that I have an interview with SGU and Ross. 🙁

But, if you can get over that and move ahead with your head high, and if you really want this chance, just work hard and you will succeed!

Didn't waste my breath either. Just walked away and back to work. Still it's hard to see that expression on the face of ppl you look up to and sought guidance from.

You'll quickly realize 99% of people and doctors don't know much about anything to do with the Caribbean.

As long as you have strong step 1 scores, that is all that matters (besides doing well in rotations).
