quick boiling point elevation question

just a quick question about boiling point elevation/etc type questions.

if the question says something like a 4m solute solution dissolves blah blah blah, do we just use a value of 4m in calculating the elevation or do we assume that the solute dissociates intwo two relevant ions and use a value of 8?

this is a colligative property type of question. You must use 8.

well i would use this to solve, Delta T = Kb(m)(i) plug the 4 into little m and the amount of ions into little i. this way you dont confuse the two.
