we have a ochem review test coming up and I am curious to the IUPAC naming of this compound

H2C=CH-CH3-CH3-CH2Br

Does the halogen take dominance for numbering or does the alkene
1-bromo-4-pentene

or

5-bromo-1-pentene

a trillion thanks in advance

Halides don't dictate the numbering. The alkene should be given priority. So it would be 5-bromo-1-pentene (or new IUPAC: 5-bromo pent-1-ene ) However, functional groups are prioritized (ie aldehydes are given more priority than alkenes etc..) Hope this helps! =)

Well i agree, with the naming given by my colleague (5 Bromo Pent-1-ene), however, i think this should have been H2C=CH-CH2-CH2-CH2Br. Please Crosscheck!!

I agree with ezzello. It should be H2C=CH-CH2-CH2-CH2Br, because carbon can only have 4 bonds.

Definitely check your bonds....and I agree with the above....thanks for posting!
