Hey,

I was just wondering-Is it true that many PM&R residents do their intern year at one institution and the remainder of their residency at another? If this is the case, my follow up question is-What is the likelihood that one can do both his/her internship and residency at the same institution. I have a wife and a kid and I kinda would like to stay in the same city for both.

Thanks,

that's usually not a problem MuMed29. some PM&R programs are categorical, which means it's a 4 year program with the "medicine" year built in. i believe LSU, Mayo, OSU, San Antonio, ECU and maybe others are categorical. now if u match into an "advanced" program, they're 3 years long and you need to also match into a prelim year. if the PMR program is in a bigger city (new york, philly, chicago, houston, etc.) then of course you'll have more options for prelim spots.
does that make sense?

I agree with the above poster. And if you want to do your internship and residency in the same hospital (or same city), you might want to consider the competitiveness of that city. There are some cities/hospitals that are very competitive and all the prelims come from top universities. Of course, if you are in a place like NYC, there are tons of prelim spots so you shouldn't have to worry. Also, the residency that takes you may help you get a prelim spot at an affiliated hospital.

but you match to your advanced PM&R program and your prelim spot on the same day so this isn't possible.

Honestly, I don't know how this works, but I've been told it happens. Maybe they put in a good word for med students they've ranked highly.

Another popular option is to try to do your prelim year in the residency affiliated with your med school (or in that city) then move for your advanced program. This makes interviewing easier too. Unfortunately, myself included, there are a lot of people who end up moving twice.

Some program directors try to coordinate with each other on matching prelims and advanced spots. For instance, the PM&R PD may tell the IM PD that they will be ranking the applicant high. This does not guarantee a prelim spot but may help. You can actually ask if they do this while you're interviewing.

And I think it helps to check with individual programs. The PM&R program at my home school is 3-year, but they have some sort of deal worked out with IM here to guarantee their two students each year a prelim medicine spot in the match, so they don't have to move twice. Unless that is, MuMed29, you're class of 2009 and will be competing with me, in which case you should know my home program is terrible and the IM year here will ruin your life. Good luck!
