Hi all!

I am currently drafting up a "are-you-taking-grad-students" email to a prominent researcher in a field that I am very interested in. He is also going to be a speaker at a conference that I am attending this fall. I was wondering how I could best take advantage of this opportunity.

I.e. - Could I say in my email that I will be at this conference and that I hope to be able to introduce myself in person? Or, should I just say that I'm looking forward to his presentation and leave it at that? If the latter way is better, would it still be okay to introduce myself at the conference if he has a free moment anyway?

I know some professors are turned off by requests from applicants to meet in person outside of official interviews. But I wonder if it's okay if I ask indirectly like I do in my first question, or if I just approach him after his presentation to introduce myself and to ask a question about his research?

What would you do in my situation???

Thanks so much! 🙂

If you're interested in the field, have you read any of his work? I ask because you will likely be spending the next several years of your life expanding upon that. Further, you could use it as a chance to ask him thoughtful questions about his research, academics love that more than Christmas orgasms.

Alright then, I'll have to file that one away for future use.

So there was supposed to be an "and" in there... But you know. I think I like it more the way it is.

 Darn. With the holidays on the horizon, you had me thinking that it was time to start my wish list....

 I don't see why you have to take them off your wish list! They sound entirely possible!

I do follow his research, as well as articles about him/his work in the news media, and I listen to his podcast. I'm kind of a fan (if that's the right word 🙄). I guess I was just wondering whether it'd be worth it to mention that I'll be there. But regardless, I'll be thinking up some questions if he's doing a Q and A or is open to having people approach him after his talk.

What is the name of the podcast? I probably listen to it too if it's up on itunes.
