If you were using the phrase "down's syndrome" in an offical document would you capitalize syndrome? I am using it in my personal statement. Thanks.

Capitalize. If you ever have a similar question, simply search for the phrase on www.google.com to see how it's commonly used. Make sure to put the phrase in quotes (e.g., "Down Syndrome").
