So basically after looking at the future of Pharmacy I've decided to go into dentistry. Dentistry was always my second choice anyway. I am a high school senior and I didn't apply to any pre dental programs. Do I need to take pre dental to go into dental school? I got into CUNY Hunter so could I go there and transfer into pre dental? I'm confused. Thanks

You could pursue any major and still get into dental school. You just have to complete the pre-requisite courses.

In your case, I would recommend shadowing a dentist for a couple of days and get a feel for dentistry.
And you could attend dental workshops for high school students that many/most dental schools have.

It's great that you are interested in dentistry. What's more important now is to make sure you are making the right investment of time/money.
Most of the battle is figuring out what you'll be passionate about in the long run.
I would recommend looking into other careers as well so you have something to compare it with.

I personally found my passion for dentistry at the age of 25, so don't feel too pressured or rushed about your future!
Good luck!

Take the pre-reqs, that's it. Major doesn't matter. Make sure you actually like dentistry and aren't just using it as a backup.

what is your reason for wanting to be a dentist? have you shadowed one before?
dentistry isn't a career you should suddenly decide to pursue without experiencing it first
if dentistry isn't your primary choice then you will not be happy in this field
you need to intern with different fields in healthcare before you make a final decision.

The reason why I chose Dental is because a very close father figure of mine is a dentist. I also want to have a job where I can work with my brain and my hands.

Hunter is a good school as far as pre-health. You don't "transfer into pre-dental." Do well in your classes, smoke your DATs, shadow, volunteer, apply to dental school, and graduation in 2024 will be here before you know it.

That's great! Maybe you can shadow him and ask him questions afterwards. You have a great resource available to you 🙂

The future isn't much brighter than for pharmacy. Two professions suffer from the same plague: inability to cap the number of people in the training pipeline.

I'm in high school so I really don't now how college is. How do I make sure I take all the pre reqs? Do I get a choice in the classes I take?

Most schools have pre-health advisors. I suggest meeting with them as soon as you start school and each semester so you remain on track. Keep in mind that you do not have to major in sciences, but it makes it somewhat easier to complete dental school pre-reqs. You can also check the websites of dental schools you're interested in to see required pre-reqs. A lot of schools are now requiring microbiology and biochemistry. But definitely meet your pre-health advisor as soon as you start undergrad. Good luck and continue to stay focused! You have a long journey ahead of you!
