hey guys--- a friend of mine is starting off his 8th semester in college. he just wanted to know if patients in general avoid DOs, as i heard from a few people not to look into that route. from what i understand, DOs get to do the same thing as MDs but they dont have as high of standards for admissions. also, my dads friend from whos a doctor from China said he would never go to a DO, which makes me wonder if a lot of people think that.

i only ask bc his current gpa is 3.47 and my conucelors told me to maintain a 3.5 at least throughout college, which i cant say the same for him..

any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! thanks for your time everyone and happy new year!

I don't think most people know the difference. But you should shoot for a MD, because it will be easier to get into the residency you want. It's your first semester, and yes your GPA could be higher, but you have 3.5 years to do this. If you really want to be a doctor start aiming for straight As... It doesn't mean a that a couple Bs here and there will kill your chances, but Aim for all As....

Think of it this way, you may get to do the same thing as a DO or MD, but you could potentially miss out on residencies/jobs with a DO, so you might as well get a MD, even though they are considered the "same" by many.

hey guys--- im new to all this med school stuff and im starting off my 2nd semester in college. i just wanted to know if patients in general avoid DOs, as i heard from a few people not to look into that route. from what i understand, DOs get to do the same thing as MDs but they dont have as high of standards for admissions. also, my dads friend from whos a doctor from China said he would never go to a DO, which makes me wonder if a lot of people think that.

Getting a 3.47 first semester is fine. Just work on getting those grades up and getting ECs.

You should research more about DOs. It is true that DOs and MDs get the same training, and it is true that standards for admission to DO schools are lower than MD.

Still, it would be stupid not to go to a board-certified DO because you thought he was less competent than an MD.

Getting into DO is like getting into the big girl on campus. You got it, but you don't want anyone to know :meanie:

ok, so it makes some sense that people would avoid going to a DO if they have an MD option 😀, thanks everyone for clearing that up - looks like im gonna have to work a little harder 🙂.

i dont want to end up in a position where im having to explain my education and why i have a degree that a lot of people consider to be subpar 😛.
