Hi all, I will receive an offer for hospital position very soon. I'm working at retail now. What would be an appropriate time to quit, cause I have my schedule up till mid May?
I don't really want to quit tbh, but because of hospital training, I won't have much time to even float for at least couple weeks. And won't it make me unhirable? I'm with them for 3 yrs , but became pharmacist recently.

Thank you.

Do it 2 weeks before you start. Talk to your boss to see if you can stay as per diem.

Thanks. I just feel a bit guilty to leave the job so quick. I will talk to DM to see what would be the best. But I doubt she would let me stay.

Congrats on the new job! As you never want to burn a bridge, but knowing that 2 weeks is acceptable, if you can give your current employer a longer notice I would do it. Unless you feel they are going to lay you off when you do turn in your notice. If that is the case then just the customary 2 weeks.

How many hours are you getting at the hospital job? part time? per diem? You obviously won't be full-time otherwise wouldn't feel guilty about quitting your full-time retail job.

It is 12x 3 days per week (full time), so if I finish training, I will have 4 days doing nothing.

That's an unusual shift, the norm seems to be 7on/7off. Any idea how this employer is covering the other 4 nights (one or two ppl?) Thx!

It works for them, I think. Always 2 overnight pharmacists per shift to cover the entire hospital.

Two overnight Pharmacists on at all times for a hospital of that size? Plus they use telepharmacy services too? Seems like a lot of staff. No rush but if/when you have the time I would appreciate knowing just how big the overnight staff is, ie Techs, nurses, etc. Thanks much, wish you well!!

2 weeks is the minimum, ideally you would work through the posted scheduled, but since it is posted so far out, then 2 weeks should do it. If you want to remain on PRN, then let them, know.

some places require 30 days - I know my employer does (or else you don't get your accrued PDO) - simply verify before hand via employee handbook

Accrued PDO is an earned benefit and it is illegal to withhold it.

Don't feel guilty. Put yourself first. They're using you as much as you're using them.

not if you break the terms of your employee handbook/contract (at least in a "right to work state") -

Well I am no lawyer but when I worked at Winn Dixie we paid it out no matter what, even in the event of theft. Legal said we had to because it was an earned benefit and would be illegal to withhold.

Could be that it varies by state. My understanding was in IL, PDO earned per paycheck had to be paid out when the person left, same as if they had traditional vacation days earned remaining.

well - again - probably varies from state to state, but I do know people who have lost PDO because of not giving enough notice, and we also don't pay out 100% if you haven't been there a certain number of years. - seems BS to me
