Hello friends!
I desperately need your opinion! I have been working as a pharm tech in retail for 5 months. During the first 2 months, I have been getting 9 hours per week because we had 2 pharmacist and 5 pharm techs working. However, for the past couple of months, 3 of the pharm techs quit because the job was so stressful. However, I am able to tolerate stress but I have been given extra hours. I work 32-33 hours a week getting paid 7 dollars an hour. I have been working for 5 months and the pharmacist who is writing the letter of recommendation needs me to work because there is only 2 techs... However, I am taking my pcats in January and need time to study. Working 32 hours a week is stressful while studying for the pcats. Sometimes I work and I become to tired to study. What should I do? Should I quit? Is 5 months experience enough for my application? I need some help guys =(. I don't think I can cut back on hours because there is only 2 pharm techs...

Five months seem adequate - most pharmacy schools say that experience isn't required anyway, just preferred, so you already have an advantage. How is your application looking otherwise? Do you feel your GPA and extracurrics aren't strong enough that you need a good rec and PCAT score? And to be honest, if you're one of only two pharm techs left, you pretty much have the upper hand in telling him no, I can't work those hours, because he can't fire you unless he wants to kill his business.

thanks guys for the replies, more feedbacks are appreciated!

If it was me I would definitely see about cutting your hours maybe if you can. I know you said that you couldn't, but maybe that'll be a change in the future for you! I know some pharmacy students who work like every 2 weeks just 8 hours in order to keep their name on the pay roll until they graduate.

I was in a similar situation as you once. I kept getting more hours than I could handle with school and my pharmacy manager was not listening to my requests.

I finally sat him down and explained how I enjoyed working in the pharmacy, however school was my number one priority. I told him the exact hours I wanted to work and if that wasn't going to work with him I would have to figure something else out (aka quit). It worked out perfectly for me and I got the hours I wanted. Might not work that way for you but it's worth a shot, good luck!

That happened to me as well, over the summer I went from 15 hours a week to close to 40 while trying to study for my PCAT. I would talk to them. I had to remind my PIC when school started to cut me back to 15 hours

$7 an hour? damn might as well just bag groceries for $7.50. I wouldnt quit, you definitely do not want to burn any bridges and you will most likely want to have at least one of those pharmacists write you a LOR. Are you also taking classes? If not, working 30-40 hours a week and studying for the PCAT should be manageable.
