I'm currently volunteering at a clinic about an hour away from my house every week. My job has been cool and lets me have off one day a week to do this, but I really need to start working full time hours due to financial needs at home. Basically I'm losing 8 hours of pay to volunteer for 4 hours and sit in traffic for 2. I've been considering quitting for a while but my only concern is that I'm on wait lists and it was brought up as a current and important EC for all these schools.

Pretending I have an actual chance of getting off the waitlist, should I wait until I get the official axe before quitting?

I would tell the site you need to take some extended time off and leave as soon as possible. If you get accepted, never return. If you don't make it during this cycle, then you can go back to this volunteer gig.

They won't check your volunteer hours beyond what you put on AMCAS. Drop it for now, and go back when you are more financially stable.

Thanks everyone, I've been at this clinic for over 2 years, so I figure it's been long enough to be significant. I've found some other volunteer opportunities which are on the weekends so I don't have to miss work.

In that case as long as you have any sort of continuous volunteering going on, you should be fine to drop the clinic. It's just important to have an ongoing commitment up until you get accepted to be on the safe side. Typically though, as long as you had ongoing volunteering at your interview, you're usually in the clear. It's when these activities get dropped immediately after submitting AMCAS is when things might get dicey.
