I've been on my parents family plan with my iPhone for the past year and have enjoyed the experience (though the phone is somewhat addictive). Now that I'm cutting the umbilical cord and buying my own plan, $1200/yr ($40 voice + $30 data + $20 text + tax) seems too expensive. That's almost 2 months rent in an affordable city! So I'm thinking about just using my old RAZR and only getting voice and 200 texts (co-residents can just page me, right?).

Have any residents here quit the iPhone? Does it make intern year any easier in terms of useful apps? The one and only reason I sort of want to keep it is so I can read the New York Times during boring lectures.

Any advice?

Can you hang on to your iPhone and just D/C your plan? Then you can use it like an iPod touch. I use an iPod touch, and just hook it up to my hospital's wifi so I get the net on the go and dont have to pay $1200/year. I still get to use all the apps and read whatever I want to...its just a bit inconvenient when I need to access the net anywhere where there isnt wifi.

Yeah, I threw the thing out the window, and bought a phone with the android operating system. Nothing beats free and open source.

Love my Droid too. But it's no cheaper monthly than the iPhone. And I don't know if you can use it to access the App Market if you don't have phone service. But I assume you can.

Yeah, on this note, is there anything like the iPod Touch, but operating Android OS? Haven't really seen anything like that, but it'd be sweet!

Can you run apps for the iPhone on the Droid? Or are there enough Droid apps that you dont feel the need for an iPhone device? E.gs. would be stuff like Epocrates, something for abbreviations, a clinical consult (Merck Manual)...

No, you can't use iPhone apps. But there are more than enough Android apps at this point. You can get Epocrates and pretty much any of the Skyscape titles. There is probably not the sheer number of apps available for Android yet, but I haven't failed to find anything I was looking for yet.

Cool. Thanks!

Taking the SIM out did work, so I guess I can just used the iPhone as an iTouch. I was hoping to only have to carry around 1 device though.....Why, AT&T/Apple, can you not just let me drop the data!!!
