I have recently been charged with a DWI. Although I know there are some other threads similar to this one, I couldn't find any close enough. My question is where do I go from here? Besides the obvious of getting a lawyer to see if it can be knocked down, do I immediately go to my dean and tell them? Since I don't know exactly what the end result will be? Or do I wait until I know what I'm convicted of? The problem is my lawyer said it could take anywhere from 6 months to a year before we have everything sorted out (as far as whether it can be knocked down, dismissed etc.) so do I wait that long and then tell my school? What about rotations beginning 3rd year?
I know it was a stupid thing and will undergo a substance abuse evaluation in a couple weeks to see if I need treatment or at the very least, attend an alcohol abuse class, so I should know those results before school starts again. I am really freaking out about this. Is this something I can be kicked out of school for? I know this is a lot but any help or any advice on who to talk to would be greatly appreciated.
Certainly legal advice should come from lawyers. I would definitely have a very confidential talk with the Dean for Student Affairs ASAP. We will see if anyone has any direct experience with this situation to offer here, recognizing that every school will be different in how it approaches this.
