I had emergency surgery and was forced to take a leave of absence from my medical education this semester. I am in an extended academic program for a dual degree anyway, so I have been able to rearrange my classes sufficiently. My problem was acute and is resolving, albeit slowly. I can return this summer. Will this automatically hurt me for residency? I obviously never anticipated an emergency surgery and don't anticipate future problems.
Thanks!
No, it will not adversely affect your application for a residency. You'll be asked about LOA's on your ERAS application. I'd suggest being fully honest about it -- i.e. "I had an emergency appendectomy". If it's not a chronic problem that's likely to recur, no one is going to care.
