Is it a good thing/ or not such a good thing to include quotes from famous individuals in your personal statement? esp. for somebody like me who does not have the worlds best GPA. And ofcourse I am talking about respectable historical figures. No quotes from Stalin in my paper I can assure you that much. But, like a Louis Pasteur, or some famous politician "I did not have sexual intercourse with that woman" . but seriously are they good to have in your statement??For pre-DOs a quote from Dr. Stills autobiography might not be such a bad idea. Anyways, let me know what you folksthink.

I think (my personal opinion)... you should concentrate more on demintrating why your GPA is low and what you plan to do about it.

Also I don't know how old you are.. but if you are 20-23 and going in to 4th year of Undergrad... I would consider begining to repeat courses where you did poorly... and take an extra semester to repeat the worst courses. Remember they take the better mark and erase your old one. Make sure you take the worst courses again.. and if possible the more senior courses.
That way your application will look better.. you can explain that your first 2 years where weak.. but you woke up adn deminstrated improvement.

This sounds like a bitter pill... but I was in the same place as you a few years ago. Repeating and planning makes a difference.. even if you have to take an extra year.

i agree with docbill about the personal statement.. focus on who you are, what you have done, and why you will make a good physician.. try your best to connect on a personal level with the reader.. don't be cliche and don't spit out quotes that you think an admissions committee will like unless it serves a very important purpose in your statement..

i totally disagree with docbill on repeating a course.. first of all, we don't even know what your GPA is.. how can we recommend for you to re-take courses? osteopathic schools often don't demand stellar GPAs.. anyways, medical schools want to accept someone who is forward thinking rather than being stuck in the past.. they would much rather you take an advanced course in a subject you did poorly in to demonstrate your mastery.. preferably a course that pertains to medical school..

good luck..

If you are a strong writer you can search hard for a quote that fits some theme in your essay and incorporate it. The thing to be wary of is not forcing it. A good idea is to refer back to your quote in the introduction from your closing paragraph.
For instance, if your quote is about tenacity in your opening paragraph then you may write about how you will persevere with tenacity like so-and-so said (from the quote in your opening paragraph) when you write your closing paragraph. The important thing is not to force it, in my opinion you should only do this if you're a strong writer and can make it flow AND you find a good quote (which can take days).
Hope that helps,
Nate

By the way, if you tell us what theme you are looking for some of us might (I could) suggest some quotes.
I just happen to write as a hobby and enjoy this sort of thing. 🙂

Your right.. I though he posted somewhere about a 3.00 GPA.

They seem to evaluate everything.. but the work load of a DO program is equal to that of an MD program and they want to be sure you can handle it.

Either way good luck.

quotes are awesome if used correctly. try to use these, they are my favorites;
"man who goes to sleep with itchy butt, wakes up with stinky finger"
or
"man who masturbates with peanutbutter, is f**king nuts"

if you can incorporates these, you deserve to go to any school!!

Here's a quote I overheard in the school library one day during my application process: "Why do I want to be a doctor? Money and bitches, my good man, money and bitches. Why else would anyone bother?"

man who stands on toilet is high on pot
