So, I think the logical step for me, since I did not get into grad school this time around, is to obtain an RAship. However, what is the best way of going about this?

Clearly, I would prefer a paying position, and one that is in my field of interest - but do these paying positions exist without taking into account rare circumstances?

I thought about looking into the Med Schools in my state (since I want to do clinical neuropsych and aging), but that is the only place I can think to look.

There does not seem to be a database or place to look for these types of positions like other jobs. I am under the assumption that most of this happens from constant digging and contacting, or from knowing someone who can help out. Is this a wrong assumption? Is there a place I can look/apply for these positions?

Thanks for you help guys!

I don't have that much direct experience with applying to RA positions, but I've seen a lot posted on hospital websites. Check with your local hospital. Most of them who have labs are hiring probably every other year and I know that PhD programs view it as a great experience. Good luck! :luck:

Here is a website that allows you to search for RA positions. It has turned up positions at Mass General and McLean in the past and can send you an email when a new position is added. You just have to carefully define your criteria for which positions interest you (e.g., research, psychology) to make sure you are getting relevant ads. Sometimes it comes up with more medically-focused positions, but it does often find good RA positions, so it is worth signing up for.

For example, this is something that was on the Division 12 listserv for the APA today. For full disclosure, I don't work at the VA and I don't have an interest in hiring for this particular position. I felt like the posting is just a good example of things that you can acquire via listservs.

Research Assistant Positions Available

Three or four full-time Research Assistant positions are available in the Summer of 2010 at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Salary range is $33,408 - $37,240. The positions involve recruiting patients for a 4 year study of the family reintegration of combat veterans, conducting interviews, entering and managing data, coordinating and tracking recruitment efforts, conducting library research, and working in a team oriented approach with other RAs. The positions include a collateral clinical role in a family outreach project for new combat veterans. This is an excellent preparatory experience for graduate school in clinical psychology. Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in psychology, pre-med. or related field, and experience in supervised psychological research is highly preferred.
4 other positions are also available in research projects concerning care management of veterans with alcohol misuse problems, family involvement in dementia care, and primary care based mental health care.
Positions will be open for application at www.USAjobs.gov for approximately 1 week, from 4/30/2010 - 5/7/2010. Search for Philadelphia.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact to Steven L. Sayers, Ph.D., [email protected], or Erin Ingram, [email protected] (215-823-5800 ext 2895) regarding the application process.

This study is run jointly with John Weisz at Harvard (we are implementing the same study with the child welfare population in Maine). I am currently the Project Coordinator here in Boston -- feel free to PM me if you want to know more about the study.
