Getting someone to prescribe it. All you have to say is you're going to a place with risk. The local health department should be able to point you in the right direction.

In all seriousness, you may be able to get the shot if you go to a travel clinic and like another poster mentioned, the local health department may also be able to help you out. Just say you are the Jane Goodall of bats and want to do a National Geographic documentary on their life cycle. You could also say you are taking a trip to Mexico to check up on your boss's dog fighting business and need some extra protection.

Also, I think the "shot" is actually a series of three so that might be something to think about with regards to timing.

If you are associated with a university try their associated travel clinic. I know as a medical student I got all of my vaccinations and medications for a summer in asia at cost to the travel clinic, which when you're getting those relatively uncommon vaccines/meds can mean hundreds of dollars.

I got them last year, it's 3 injections. make sure you tell them it's some trip OVERSEAS that involves being close to animals otherwise some ******* tech is going to give you a hard time. I had to pull up the CDC website and show her that it's a legit injection when traveling on a safari!
