Hi everyone, on the app, what is my ethnicity if I'm a dark skinned arab. I'm not black, but I'm not white. I know I'm not Asian, and I know I'm not an Indian. Can someone please help me! thanks!

There is no such thing during the dental school application cycle. I am an Asian and even an immigrant. During my post-bac and all the dental school interviews (13 schools with 9 acceptances), all professors are so helpful and fair. As long as you work hard and are willing to sacrifice some leisure time to participate in community activities and study, you will be accepted to dental schools.
 
i don't think race matters. In this world, and I quote Peter Griffin "the only colour that matters is green."
 
I doubt adcom minds which ethnic group do you belong to, but it is quite a significant data for demographic analysis.
 
I am sorry vietho but There is no such thing as white name like u said george. Name is name and doesn't matter if they are white or any other. Becasue u will find people with such names in many ethnic backgrounds.

To OP, I think U should put Asian because u are still classified as Asian the reason is Bcz Middel East is still in Asia. Most people think of asian as oriental which is not true. For demographic and race purposes u are Asian.

To me, this is crap. Only on paper we get to be white, but in real life we are treated as....

Yes, middle easterners are considered white unless middle easterner is an option as Yah-E pointed out. The middle east is geographically part of asia but politically part of europe or on their own, depending on who you talk to. Russia, China, and India border the middle east politically speaking. Oriental is an old term whites termed asians. They are now referred to as asians as some in the community have taken offense in being called an oriental.

Oh yes, I suppose if I am asian my name should be "long doc don" or if I am american indian "chief squaking bird" or if I am indian "habib" eh?????

I guess it must be true, medical students are smarter than dental students.
 
Dude, just mark yourself as BLACK, you will get more interview invitations 😀
I personally, don't think Arabs are white and must be something else on the application.

Answer: "you would be considered as a MIDDLE EASTERNER"

I am confused here middle easterner describes nationality not ethnicity.

Another Answer: Arab is Middle Easterner and BY DEFINITION, Middle Easterners are considered white!!!!

If this is the case then does nationality determine your ethnicity,

Then would a person who was born in Nigeria, but has parents that
were from China and are Chinese, be considered black in ethnicity
because that person is from Nigeria ?

Hello, who started the last 3 riots in LA? Let's see, the infamous Watts riot, the Rodney King riot, and oh yes the rioting when the Lakers won the NBA finals. Hrmm, Liberty City you say, oh yes, they were started by blacks. Is your point therefore that blacks love to riot? Your examples point otherwise smart boy.

whether George is a white name, I apologize if that came off as insensitive. I had no bad intentions to begin with.

As for preludexl....well there is not much to say. I think he could use some dose of maturity when it comes to criticizing comments but I do believe he has something against medical students or smart boys judging by his sarcastic remarks. Enough is enough, he is not worth another second of my time to discuss further. Wish you the best preludexl from this point.

Man there are a lot of WEIRD responses in this forum.

Let me come in to clarify please:

There are three main races which branch into other ethnicities. I don't even believe in RACE but more of a spectrum of different peoples. Kind of like a rainbow. 🙂

Anyways here is what I have read in my Encyclopedia Britannica. There are 3 main races...

Caucasoid
Mongoloid
Negroid

Caucasoid includes people who are Indo-European Descent ranging from Europe to South Asia. They typically range in colors from very white to very dark. European descent, Hispanic, Middle Easterners, South Asians descendants fall under this category

Mongoloid are primarily "Asian" (which is not really a race but geographical description of people. Typically they are people of far east origin.

Negroid is primarily of African origin. In the United States however, majority of African Americans are mixed with European descent. So, I don't consider them as dominantly categorizing under one race either.

George happens to be a very popular Arab Christian and Indian Christian name. Middle Easterners are not white but Caucasian and yes there is a HUGE difference between being white and being Caucasian. White is a color. Caucasian is a descent.

I don't believe in categorizing by race or preferring a select group of people based on race. Socio-Economic background is more reasonable consideration as that is an additional hurdle that people must overcome to obtain higher education.

Anyways that's my two cents.

As for the "white" business, people shouldn't use "white" and "Caucasian" interchangeably. Whites are people of Northwestern European origin. Caucasians (of which "white" is merely a subgroup) are indigenous to Europe, north Africa, and western Asia and can be very light to very dark--and almost anything in between.
 
For those who are interested in this topic, I think we should go back to Genesis and read about Noah and his three sons.

After that terrible flood, only Noah's family survived and from his 3 sons, the whole earth is populated. All 3 races from one father.

We can't mate with monkeys (it's possible but can't reproduce... you know what I mean) but interracial *** is POSSIBLE! we are the ONE!!

WE ARE THE ONE~~~~~~~~~!!! WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!

WE HAVE COMMON ANCESTOR!!! YAY~~!!

Why are we talking about religion when the OP asked an administrative question about AADSAS?
 
I've most likely got Arab ancestry (from the moors that invaded spain 1300 years ago) and I'm going to put Hispanic on my application next summer, you are welcome to do the same if you want to.

People labeled hispanic come from everywhere and from all three race categories. You've got black people from the islands, native americans from Mexico and South America, white people from Europe, lots that are a mix of the three "races", and Asians in the phillipines all labeled as hispanic. It's what you put when you don't fit in anywhere else.

On a serious note, I used to work for admissions for a college here in Texas, and our database definition of white included people from the middle east.
 
Predulex, you are always so confrontational in your responses. I'm curious, how old are you? You shold RELAX. It will help you greatly in the future with your patients, because you seem to have none.

Would like to be educated on this please. The reason I ask, is rather than be told by a faith based organization(I.E catholic church), I would like to hear it from a practicing Islamic follower. "Straight from the horses mouth"

Its very hard for me to watch the news of innocence killings of people in general and seeing video tape of it as well.
 
hey, ya i completely agree with you. when most ppl see the beheadings and the killings of hundred and thousands overseas, they automatically attribute the killings to muslims. and in most cases, it is extreme muslims who have twisted the faith to suit their needs. however, in reality, muslims when going to war, are not allowed to cut down trees, demolish houses, or kill innocents. when these ppl grab an american working for an oil company in saudi, or a korean working in iraq, they are grabbing a civilian. and they will burn in hell for what they did. islam is a religion that emphasis peace and compassion. when i see whats happening in israel/palestine right now it kills me, because when the roles were reveresed, when the arabs were in control and the jews lived with them, the jews lived in peace and prosperity! they served in high posts in the governemnt, and even when the spanish began their inquisition and kicked everybody who wasnt chrisitian out, the jews followed the muslims to north africa, turkey, and other countries! they knew that they will be protected and given freedoms under a muslim country. ha sorry for the long post guys, if anybody has any more questions about islam, feel free to post or PM me.

Race matters in some schools. I have seen and experienced it. But, as the poster mentioned, one has to just work hard and keep his eyes on the goals to succeed.
