Actually if you watched the game, Morelli didn't suck at all. He made 2 pretty big mistakes but this was his first really big game. 95% of his passes were spot on, and there were plenty of perfectly thrown balls that were dropped at crucial times (D. Williams). If you really watched the game you would agree that ihs performance was at least a B (1 stupid int and one rookie fumble)

It came down to 2 things: Absolutely nothing going Penn State's way, and ND offense being just too good. Next year the result will be drastically different (when ND loses Quinn and Samardzija)

And being at Beaver stadium will help. I think this year is just an experience year. Morelli isn't the quickest one around so it may take a while for him to correct mistakes...but overall I was impressed. That is a bigtime game to start for the first time away...I am so angry that when I am gone they are going to get all the good games again. I mean come on... we play temple in november....

Only 2 of them were "foreign". The other 2 eye specialists were "white".
my mistake. here i was trying to defend christian haha. well then he should have anything to complain about. oh wait, they're not half latino like he is. that must be the problem.

Are you trying to be smug? There is one American Doctor that's it the OTHER THREE were Foriegn... And, I never said I didn't want to work with a Foriegn Doctor. There is actually excellent asian doctors at my school they are just not doing research in the field I am interested in. Why are you being so defensive?

I believe more in affermative action but I hate that we are in need of AA in the scientific community.
Ya know, it so easy for some people to conclude that the reasons there aren't more URM's in research positions is because they're not qualified, but so much harder for the majority of folks to think that racism plays ANY role. Just ask ANY URM researcher if they have ever dealt with racism and the answer will be a resounding hell yeah!

Unfortunately, this country wasn't founded on the belief that all people are equal (despite what the contistution says). In fact, laws have needed to be passed just so that minority folks could get something that resembles "equal" treatment. In other words, the reason minorities now have the rights/freedoms they do have, is not because of some heart felt need for the majority to be kind. No, it took LAWS being passed to change things. Here's a short list of a few:

Civil rights
Womens right to vote
The right to marry someone of a different race
Anti-lynching laws

This in contrast to Jim Crow laws which were PASSED by folks and reigned supreme in the South from about 1860 to 1960. So were talking ONLY 40 years here.

There's no doubt that things for URM's will change. But not until the children and grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren of the idiots who passed and enforced these laws have long since turned to dust. So I'm thinking by the next millenium, URM's should be in good shape!🙄

Send me a PM for info about the NIH since supposendly you can no longer post links to sites not in partnership with SDN.

Stay strong!!!

Before you go whining about racism and comparing yourself to foreigners and saying YOU have it worse, let me ask you a few questions...

Have you ever experienced real racism? Not the whiny **** you are talking about that everyone white, black, brown, green, or blue has encountered? Im talking about bottles being thrown at you and people asking if mommy or daddy are going to fly a plane through another building? Ever experienced that?

Ever been jumped purely based on your race? Ever seen the hatred in people's eyes purely based on your race? Been harrassed by law enforcement extensively because of it when you were entirely innocent?
If you can say yes to all of the above questions, if you can say that purely based on your race you have had bottles or fists thrown at your face, if you have been harrassed and subsequently arrested for nothing other than your race THEN YOU CAN WHINE ABOUT RACISM. THIS IS RACISM, NOT THE **** YOU ARE CRYING ABOUT. .
I can say yes , but this guy doesn't even know if he actually faced racism. He "thinks" that the professor was being racist because he has a tan. What a joke dude. I'm kind of glad for the professor's own sake tha he turned you down.
I really think you're the racist here for putting the "foreigners" against the "true Americans" such as yourself.

I NEVER SAID THE PROFESSOR WAS RACIST OR NOT... I don't know... I only said I am a minority and this is what happen... you be the judge... stop taking the conversation to places it isn't even going.

and HEDNEJ let me ask you this... in your home country... What would you say your class status is compared to the rest of the people???

No, what you were doing with this thread is akin to comparing a slight cough to what a lung cancer patient faces.

Dear OP,

When you put "RACISM" (in all caps, no less) in the title of your thread, and you ask for people's opinions on whether or not you experienced racism, you are clearly intentionally directing the conversation in that direction, so stop with the crap about how you didn't want the thread to go down like this. Nobody is buying it.

You're also not listening to a word anyone else has to say to you. I suspect you figured you would be getting a lot more sympathy than you have been. Instead, you've discovered that almost no one sees the situation the way you do. That must be difficult to process, and becoming defensive is a natural reaction. Unfortunately, it's not terribly helpful if you'd like to grow and take anything out of this experience.

My advice to you would be that you try to open your mind and use the responses you've received to see your difficulties in a different light. I also suggest that you request to have this thread closed, because people are just going to keep piling on you if you don't. (PM me or any other forum mod and we'd be happy to do it for you.)

lol, no one sees what I see because most people in research and medschools are either white or Asian... I would probably say the same for here. Do I feel someone is piling on me, NOT at all. I feel this thread is legitamate and should be served as awarness to what goes on instead of trying ACT like things like this don't happen...

I served no one disrespect and have had some intellectual conversations with some of the people here...

I have a background in sociology and minority subjects and can position my arguments in such a way that provides either agreement or disagreement... I know this... but I won't back down from an obvious situation in our schools that should be given some attention to... We are supposed to be supporting people and uplifting them... Not using are lazy and arrogant ways to make it more and more difficult for minority and or lower income students the oppertunities to succeed in the scientific community. Sorry but if someone has a problem with it than they can say so but don't keep comming with pointless arguments and responses that try to deny what is going on.

Ugh. MiesVanDierMom was totally correct in saying that people just come on the site looking to start fires and find things that offend them. Seriously, with the amount of racism threads already out, this person just tried to come in with their problems and tie them into racism.

Yes they are problems, and his situation sucks totally, but the description of the assistant position and the TA postition had no logical link to the final paragraphs of the original post, which was a plea for White Americans to stop letting foreginers take jobs.

I think we should hide this thread, especially before KapilMD comes here because then all shet is going to break loose...

you comming from Baltimore MD should rethink your comments... It is amazing how smug people can be... even when the darn well know the parts of the country they come from are economically challenged and the minority situation regarding equal education and equal rights is severlly lacking. But, alas we should just hide this thread and sweep it under the rug as if nothing like this happens whatsoever in the U.S.

My plea isn't for "White Americans" to stop letting foriegners take jobs. My pleas if for "White Americans" to see that we minority kids can do some of this research and engineering if you would recognize that we need a chance and because you are the current people in these positions of falculty and power you are the ones we need to help understand and push for fair and equal treatment.

These are the threads I come to SDN to read when I need a break from work. Thank you, to all involved!

I have to say all in all I found it productive and did receive good information from it... Am I ok, YES,,, did I rant, YES... Does this nonsense go on, YESSSS...

lol, I still love everyone in the scientific community and will always love what I do... that is why I chose this field... HERE HERE to all involved.😍

Yeah parts of the country are economically challenged, and Baltimore definitely has its bad spots. Minority situation and AA definitely has its problems.

That doesn't change the fact that your description of your problems of getting certain positions and jobs has little to do with racism. Don't misconstrue my post and make people think I'm ok with racism or the state of certain areas of this country. What I was saying had nothing to do with racism or discrimination, much like your original post. I was saying that the premedical forum for some reason or other has been plagued by individuals who won't chill out and start massive flame conversations about race. Your post is very unneccessary and provides stress to the subforum because it has a very, very weak tie to racism.

Here:
I beg American citizens to see this nonsense!!! White Americans especially because to be honest you are the ones who still run ****. Would you rather have foreigners taking all the jobs or start giving our minority American citizens real chances and opportunities to succeed rather than crushing our every move?
I know what you were trying to say. My point is that you could have deleted everything before this paragraph, because it had very little logical revelence. This is the message of your post, and given all the threads that have been made/ressurrected on SDN, yours was the most rantlike and not based on relevant experience.

Don't get me wrong, how they treated you sucked. But I find very little of it to do with race, other than the lingering thought in the back of your mind that you kept repeating: "is this because of my race?"

And I wanted this thread hidden, not because racism is ok (cuz its not) or because AA is perfect (cuz its not) or because your situations were ok (cuz they aren't) - I wanted it hidden/deleted/whatever because right now there's too many people on SDN who don't have the emotional maturity or composure to talk about racism without getting overly insulted.

I'm telling you. Once Kapil makes his way over here, it's over.

There's an old saying in psychology, "Don't try to talk reason to a 'crazy' person."

I'd say this applies in these ways:

OP, you have clearly dug your heels in. You have made your position clear; there actually is no debate.

You are clearly not open to feedback of any sort and are unwilling to entertain possibilities other than the ones you are holding onto with an iron grip. You are not interested in learning, only defending.

You are choosing to stand with one foot firmly on victim and one foot firmly on villian. This leaves pretty limited options for interacting with you which get progressively more boring as time goes on.

It is difficult for others to truly appreciate your experience, because you refuse to get curious about how you might have been involved in creating your own situation. In most instances, we all have some level of involvement in creating what happened. Instead, you wax defensive when others invite you to look at yourself and your reactionary position. In short, you are not willing to take full responsibility for your situation.

Labels mean nothing outside of your own mind, unless you adequately define them. You think you are being clear, but the feedback is that you are not. You do not define the important elements of your argument in a manner that others can relate with. Therefore, no meaningful discussion can be developed.

You have an unconscious agenda that is becoming clearer to everyone but you with each post you furnish.

Until you open your mind, learn how you are participating in creating the negative dramas in your life, you will continue to experience the same problems you are squeaking so loudly about.

That said, I hereby fire myself from trying to get you to see reason.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck on your application process and I truly hope that when it comes time for your interviews, you will expand into appreciation and wonder about yourself and others.

Yea I really think we are 1 year away from being big time again, although they should make it to a bowl game easily. What type of bowl game will be the question.

I'm also impressed with Morelli. I honestly was expecting a lot worse. He still has a way to go but if he can improve his awareness I think he's going to be nasty with that arm.

Ironman, you honestly didn't see better progression from the red shirt freshman that came in at the end? I just don't think Morelli is the answer... What year is he anyway?

my mother is 100% italian and yes, assimilation of our society has deemed her as a full "white person." So, of course you or her is going to get any type of "daygo" or WOP (with out papers) racism in today's day and age...
The term is actually "dago" not "daygo". Started out as slang for the Spanish (came from the common name "Diego") and eventually evolved to refer specifically to Italians.

The second term is actually "wop" and is not an acronym. The "without papers" thing is urban legend (like COP for "constable on patrol"). Wop actually comes from the Italian dialectical "guappo", meaning thug.

I figure if you're going to get called the names, knowing the etymology might be handy.

Good post. I don't know how to reason "chilling tfo" with these die hard racism topic fans anymore either. As always, love the "villian vs victim vs hero" concept.

See the funniest part of all is that there is URM's in science... nobody debates that... Why? Well I don't know why don't you try to answer that quesetion first and then say the things you are saying.

Being in denial of a crappy system doesn't mean it isn't harmful and should be looked at...

Explain to me the URM phenomenon and I will be impressed if you don't use the word racism or discrimination in your explanation.

Are you even reading my posts?? I don't deny that there are URMs in science. I don't deny that AA is a pretty messed up system. I don't deny racism or discrimination exists in our culture and society.

What doesn't make sense is why you would try and make a discussion of racism and discrimination with the expereiences you have had. If you just want to rant, rant. Don't make yourself out to be some sort of racial victim at least not with the experiences you described in your original post. The only reason I can think of why you would write those things about that Dr. and your TA job is to just add to the mess in the premedical forum.

Dude, leave this guy alone. Obviously whatever we say is falling on deaf ears. He's not going to get it, no matter how many times we tell him. Let him bitch as much as he wants about whatever he wants. I'm honestly so sick of seeing threads like this that really help no one get into med school.

Sorry man, I don't see the racism in this...

Since when does unprofessional=racist.....there are many ways to be unprofessional w/o being racist....I don't think anyone will tell you that those professors weren't being unprofessional.....but there are no signs of racism

Some of it was a bit unprofessional, but then again that's just how life is. Sometimes you get screwed. I'd change the title of this thread though, as it is somewhat misleading.

I dont think it's RACISM or discrimination, I think you just need to CHILL-the-@#$!-OUT.

longest post ever...dont quite see the racism, but I'm not in totally convinced you need to air it all out like this...

Does this make sense to anyone else?
Wow. Seriously, cry more noob.

Obvious troll. Feeding time is over

Yea. It might be a crappy and frustrating thing but the race deal didn't really seem applicable.

did i just get suckered by a troll? this can't be 4 real

Your last part of the paragraph sorta makes u look like a troll.

I dont think its racism. I got rejected from BU yesterday, can I claim racism?

ok i've read all of your posts in this thread, and it all begs the question: if it isn't racism and you admit it, why do you still have the title reading "RACISM......" you even mention in your initial post that you didn't think this was racism. why leave your title as is? and then you repeat it ad nauseum later in the thread. change the title to reflect the true meaning of your post.

Just for these comments - especially the one about concluding the doctors were foreign or American based on their names (that's pretty dumb of you bro) - I hope you don't get into med school. You're the only one on SDN I've said this to.

My point is that nowhere in your incoherent rambling did you resemble a rational thought. The title of your thread is RACISM, and yet, the 1000 words you use to start it includes no examples of racism.

There is a lot of unnecessary anger in this thread.
This had nothing to do with race.

Notice that no one has agreed with you yet? Maybe that means something. It all seems to be going in one ear and out the other.

please open your eyes to the real world. like i've said, **** happens. learning to deal with something you cannot fix will probably benefit you.

no need to pull the race card...not even close to being applicable...and this is coming from a minority who wears an afro and holds his fist high in the sky

You're coming from the land of make-believe racism, where most of us do not spend time vacationing. Victims like you oversaturate the playing field and make it that much harder for people who actually experience racism to get justice. Minority+not getting what you want does not = racism. period.

Zero racism, just the bs that everyone deals with. I was promised a research position and didn't get it. I was told I had another teaching position and didn't get it. Chill out man, its stuff everyone has to deal with.

This is by far the most ******ed thread on SDN. Here's this guy, whos's been bitchslapped once, and probably doesn't talk to his Italian mother anymore so he's bitching abt it on SDN. Dude, go cry alone in your room. We all have our own problems to deal with.

christian, first of all, i'm a guy with a girl as my avatar. second, it's obvious you're stuck in your little racist rut and nothing anyone says is going to pull you out of it. go do your thing, keep pulling the race card, and you'll see where that gets you in the US.

Come on, the crap you are whining about like a little baby is not even close to being racism. Its pre-med hoops that everyone jumps through.

There's a list of quotes that's been said from page 1 to page 4. That says it all.

For those of you tuning in, don't waste time with this thread, there's no racism described in the OP. It was just made by someone who just wanted to jump on the racism bandwagon that's started here on SDN. We tell him there's little racism in his OP, and he responds by yelling that we are all racist and don't care about racism in America. I wouldn't be surprised if it is KapilMD on a different name...

wow, i can't believe i read the whole thing.

christian, dude, you're really all over the place here. first it's racism (thread title), then it's not, then you can't help but wonder in the back of your mind that it is racism, then you start in on not having research opportunities, then you go into foreign-trained docs, etc, etc, etc. i'm not really sure what your point is anymore.

it's like that line from that movie Heathers - when a teenager complains about being treated like an adult, it's usually because they are. racism, discrimination, bigotry, and unprofessionalism could all explain your situation. it could also be a thing called life. sometimes it's sh*tty and there's no rhyme or reason to it, and what's worse - there is often absolutely squadoosh you can do about it.

of course minorities get crapped on by the establishment, and i can't fault you for being ticked off about not getting the position(s), but what exactly are you trying to accomplish here? are you looking for sympathy? understanding? sure, i can understand why you, as a minority, would be suspicious of the establishment, but the fact is there is no evidence that racism was at play here. you can't really raise a stink over this situation because you can't back it up with proof.

i could write a bunch on life lessons/postulates, but instead i'll just say this.
1) politics sucks, life is politics, and politics is about perception. the TA lady perceived that you upstaged her with the review thing. you can't reasonably expect to get hired.
2) pick your battles. this one's not worth fighting.

perhaps you're not intellecutally able to put it all together??? 👍

perhaps you're not intellecutally able to put it all together??? 👍

yeah, you're right. that must be it, but at least i can spell intellectually correctly.

i tried to engage you as an intellectual (see, that's how it's done) equal and give you an honest critique of your position. in return, you insult me. nice job. i hope you don't treat your patients the same way, if you ever make it that far.

wow, i can't believe i read the whole thing.
wow, i can't believe you still decided to post after reading it, and also my last recap post of what everyone thinks of this thread. don't bother.

look I am not calling this Doctor Racist... I honestly am not. I am saying that when people do this type of thing it sucks... and when you are a minority it sucks two fold because you think that it is more in the back of your mind... I wish people would try to understand where I am comming from...

As a person of color, it really is hard to distinguish whether what you experienced was racism or discrimination or just plain life because I would have to have experienced the attitudes and tones in order to make a determination. I think for sure that this forum is not a particularly empathetic one to such issues. I agree, as some others suggested, it would have been better to discuss this elsewhere. For the most part, folks here CANNOT understand where you are coming from or what you have experienced for a multitude of reasons.

But chalk this up as a couple of those experiences that contributed to your continued resolve to become a doctor. See yourself as someone who overcomes obstacles and is not blocked or knocked down by others' small view of your abilities and accomplishments.

:luck: :luck:

I am Cuban.

Letting you know, CUBAN is not on the US minority list.
And as you probably know, neither is Italian.

The person did not like you. It is easy to see why.

YOU'RE an IDIOT... of all the people on here that responded to this post you are the STUPIDIST ONE...

First of have you ever read an AMCAS APPLICATION... HISPANIC depending if you're white hispanic or black or mixed Hispanic is different... GOT IT... MOMO... wow that was really ******ed.

Obviously from your whimsical remark you must be the WHITE CUBAN and good for you... you were the ones that left when CASTRO took over and are now nestled neatly in MIAMI and still for some strange reason consider yourselves to be "Cuban" HAAAAAA if Castro died and George found WMD's in CUBA and forced Cuba to become a democracy you wouldn't go back you would be right here...

PISS OFF

longest post ever...dont quite see the racism, but I'm not in totally convinced you need to air it all out like this...

WOw good post Eternalrage, just wish others would see the big warning sign and just let this thread die. Please, this thread really didn't accomplish anything, people please stop bumping this.

PISS OFF
What's your location again?

Oh yeah, that's right: Miami.

Especially after claiming to "serve no disrespect".

I am Cuban.

Letting you know, CUBAN is not on the US minority list.
And as you probably know, neither is Italian.

The person did not like you. It is easy to see why. <<<<<<<is that person serious?

Just close it already Malone, nothing productive came out of this thread.

Dude, no see you're "that PERSON" that feels racism and discrimination doesn't exsist in this world any longer. You're that Person that calls people N words and ****'s behind their backs and thinks you are privillege in society so that is just the way the world works so no one else should question it. Your that "Person." that makes rush judements that people wear ties to class and have attitude problems.

You don't know me from Adam so to make the comments you have are simply, ******ED. As are mine because of the same reason.

Listen we all know it happens but if you can't understand my point or reasoning behind what I am saying just think about it the next time you're in an emergency room and the doctor comes out and you're peeved that he/she doesn't speak any english, or atleast the kind of english to your liking.

I wouldn't disagree that racism doesn't exist in the US, but I really don't think your situation (as you've explained in your original post) falls into that category. I think you need to be a realist and 1) know that racism will probably always exist, but 2) realize that its probably not the reason for the "hardships" you've discussed. Based on your post, and keep in mind that I'm an advocate for drive-by judging (haha j/k), you seem like you're letting your emotions get in the way of your thinking and you sound totally ignorant. For one, I couldn't understand you wanting to work under these professors if you think they're so unprofessional. Secondly, I doubt any racism on their parts based on how you've explained everything and I'd go further to say that I doubt its a coincidence that you were treated that way in each situation. I agree with an earlier poster that maybe you should look at your own attitude... Maybe you need to make an adjustment instead of whining and writing it all off on the race-card.

I'm a white kid from a middle-upper class suburb of a major city with a bachelors degree, graduated with honors, etc, etc, etc. When I applied for a couple nursing assistant positions in the ER of one of the hospitals by my school I didn't get the jobs, but two black females that I knew got them instead. Did I go cry to my mom? No, I knew that they had much more experience than I did and I attributed the hiring decision to that and congratulated them. Moral of the story is: look for a reason other than racism for the way you've been treated, because although everyone says "life is unfair" - which is true to some extent - theres usually a legit reason behind someone in those positions would treat you as such. Also remember... In America you have the right to the pursuit of happiness, no the right to happiness. Stop complaining and do something constructive about it.

close it. anyone who disagrees with him or calls him out on his inability to construct a coherent argument gets the response, "maybe you're not intellectually capable to understand my argument." no point in discussing this anymore.

actually you should just delete the thread.

Please close it on the sole basis that it really bothers me that its entitled "REASON's"

and I am OCD about grammar/possessive wrongdoings :meanie:

I invented the question mark!!!
