I have 3 flights scheduled during my last 10 days in the military. This will effectively cut my meaningful work time remaining to about one or two days. There are a few advantages to being a flight doc. Schedule a night flight and you are in crew rest all day and by reg can't go to work. Beautiful.

Sweet! I am so jealous...but happy for you. 👍

60 more days...

TERMINAL LEAVE is a term used for those who are retiring....If you have not done your 20....you will be going on SEPARATION LEAVE...which is different...and which CAN be denied....as happened to me in 2004 because the f uc king navy couldn't plan for the fact that EVERYONE in their right mind was getting out.

I got the first indication today that the nazi nurses that run our system are going to try to revoke my terminal leave. Middle management nazi nurse wanted to see my orders so she could verify my Date Of Separation. This was immediately after a manning meeting where she would have seen my name on the projected losses slide. I'll be going around her to the CC tomorrow.

Does anybody have any experience making an IG or Congressional complaint based on denying terminal leave to an honorable dischargee? I'd love to know if there is a precedent out there somewhere.

The AF calls it terminal leave regardless of whether you are separating or retiring. The coven of nurses and the head witch already tried to deny my leave, but the fact that the base commander approved my leave > 6 months ago means she got bitch slapped when she tried to pull that s#it at the last minute. It was beautiful. Regardless of what it is called, my leave is safe and I am out of here next week.

This question is just posed out of curiosity. Suppose a person was prior service and sold back a large chunk of leave when they separated. If they rejoin and build up a large balance of leave could terminal leave then be denied them when they separated a second time. An individual is only allowed to sell back 60 days in their entire career. Would command have to approve the leave in order to stay under the 60 day limit or would one just lose the leave days?

Just curious, how much terminal leave did you get approved for?

It happens every year! Separation leave is command optional! Every other *******ing person in the Navy gets it EXCEPT physicians. Curious enough they are surprised that everyone with the OPTION of getting out, does. The last kick in the a ss on the way out goes unnoticed....

You can be denied terminal leave or separation leave. A guy I worked with who retired had his terminal leave shortened. It's at the discretion of the command. My command typically only allows 14 days of terminal or separation leave, though in the past year, this has become a bit more lenient and the CO is allowing more depending on the staffing situation. Ultimately, it's up to your CO. I got 2 weeks approved. Fortunately, I didn't go in with high hopes! Remember, the military is not required to let you take leave of any type, just liberty (ie, they have to let you go home from work or to rest at some point). So if you're planning to get out and don't want to take the financial loss of selling leave back, start far in advance and take your leave!

66 days. The fcuking nurses just couldn't handle it. They had to try to fight it but lost hopelessly when the ops world came crashing down on them. Stick with ops because they have the kind of juice that nurses only dream of.

😱

Dude, you are my hero. Hopefully, as an SME, I can use the same channels to get close to that amount of leave, but to be honest I would be thrilled with 30 days of terminal leave.

If you can stay in a SME billet, the chances are better for getting more leave days approved. Line commanders typically aren't psycho nurses who get off by stomping on physicians. Start your request for separation from active duty a little more than one year before your DOS. On that form, there is a section that says "I plan on taking terminal leave beginning on or about X date." Get your line commander to sign it and the MDG weenies don't even have any say in the process. It is beautiful.

Today I final out at 0900 then step to fly at 0930. When I get off the jet, I'm just going grab my helmet bag and walk away. No debrief, no forms, no nothing... VFR direct to the bar to celebrate.

Congrats. Although you'll experience a number of negative emotions for years to come, I'm sure you'll stay on this forum both as a form of therapy, and because it's the right thing to do. Military medicine needs to be shut down, and the cockroaches that run it need to be stomped out.

Sweet!!! I'll experience the same emotion in 47 days. Can't wait!!!🙄

It will be here before you know it. I'll check in after a few days when I finally decide to sober up.

Thanks, Galo. Yes, I'll still be around on this forum in order to spread the ugly truth and to help others avoid the horrendous mistake I made back when I was a naive kid who just got accepted to med school.

6 MORE DAYS!!! My "donut of misery" is almost closed!!!

Congrats, Dive. Your taste of sweet sweet freedom will be here soon. It will all just be a memory in less than a week.

Hell yeah, brother! Congratulations on surviving milmed.

Terminal leave is the best thing going... unemployed and still getting a paycheck, plenty of time for seeking truth in the bottom of a whisky bottle, chasing skirts, laughing at my alarm clock when I wake up every day around 11:00, travelling, not giving a damn about anything, being able to sleep away the hangover... the list goes on and on and on.

Dive, is your pancreatitis kicking in yet? It is Friday, but weekends don't seem to mean so much when you're unemployed, except you get to hang out with your working friends.

Not really; but I’m starting to notice a mild yellow hue in my sclera.

Thanks! Terminal leave is sweeter than I thought.

😀😀😀 OUT!😀😀😀 4 long years later I can start my life again......in the residency i should have been graduating from today!

too all the MS-? and pre-meds. All we can do is show you the water, we can't make you drink it. Listen to the people who are in the trenches of MilMed! I wish I had them 7 years ago...

The military match's application became available yesterday. "Deferred" was definitely listed as my top choice. With 17 EM spots available for deferral, I'm sure hoping that I can go through the Match like a normal medical student.

I'm four months s/p Navy AD and finally doing my residency. What can I say? Feels freaking awesome! To all of you currently doing your GMO/DMO/FS time: try enjoy your time in the military (not everything is bad), try to learn as much as you can and GTFO as soon as possible. Trust me, there is plenty of light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!

Dive,

What did you decide to do about your remaining commitment?

IRR, Guard, or Reserve?

19 months to go and counting...

IRR, although I considered the MIT program (reserves) for a while. Stay positive...19 months is nothing...

Resurrected, because after reading this thread many times for moral support, I finally get to add my name to it. Separation orders are in hand - let the countdown begin!😎

In just a few short months I will be sending AHRC my letter of resigning my commission...not only will I be released from active duty...I will be wiped off the roster for good👍
