Applying to radonc residency was expensive - back in the day when it was competitive at least. I spent probably around $10-$15k on traveling, hotels, etc, etc. Add the step board exams ($$$) and the continued massive increases in tuition/living expenses for medical students, and I have zero problem with them asking for help when they graduate. No one has to give it to them, so asking hurts precisely no one. Give if you would like, or not.

However, excluding a poor medical student from this process based solely on their skin color is racist. Period. Pretend I put hand clap emojis in there for emphasis if you need to.

Marvelous effort - this is probably one of the best memes I've ever seen on SDN Rad Onc and we've had some worthy competition.

No doubt. Huge expense. Worthwhile cause to help out too.

I just saw it on radonc twitter and thought it may be the radonc-curious med students looking to take advantage of the buyer's market to secure some extra cheddar from desperate programs. Like a star football recruit in the SEC or prized basketball recruit in the ACC.

That would be a hilarious, and brilliant hustle. Would definitely respect.

Wow this is a real thing! I mean gotta admire the hustle. And a lot of residency programs give educational stipend too so you don’t have to use your own money.

Well.. SDN crew I need a I need a PS5, 4K monitor for radiology, iPhone 14..

its very funny that places like UCSD care about “diversity”. Back in the day, none of these places cared about it. Their rosters were MdPhd pedigree crew. Maybe they gave lip service to it, i certainly never did hear anything about racial diversity, just chairs saying “we love our women”, “nobody loves women more than we do”

now the optics of this are just bad. Luring URMs into a dead end field is evil.

An anonymous surgeon wrote an editorial on Scandinavian J of Surgery in 2018.
In this article, if you replace the word "surgery" with "radonc", it is so true even for our field...

Yeah,

I thought we (radonc's) were alone but that article came from an American Surgeon, sad but true!
I like to see the days when the MDs, and not some dumb MBA RN CEO blah blah blah, are in charge of healthcare facilities...
I miss the good old days when MDs were in control of hospitals etc.

The conclusion of that article was "funny", also sad to see what he/she had to say (in bold words below)...

EXCERPT:

"One may ask: what is the point of complaining and criticizing without suggesting a remedy. In my mind, there is no partial remedy for the system. No method of palliation would eradicate the cancer. Only radical resection: replacing the system with a single payer system would have a chance to work. But this is a wishful thinking. It would never be allowed to happen in this country. I personally have connected with so many people because of it. To feel supported by the community during this stressful time is truly beautiful. I can't wait to do this for students next year when I have a paycheck.
Others who were in need of supplies received them and their lives will be the better for it. Sure there were plenty of high end items on peoples's wishlist, but that's what it is. No one is forcing anyone to pay.
I feel sorry for you people who feel the need to bring others down

I don’t think anyone was “making fun” of him for posting a wish list. It was more bemusement. Respect to him if it works. I hope he is not under any illusions about radonc

Oh yeah absolutely nothing against the wishlist thing - we're here to be steer kids away from RadOnc, not from other MedTwitter movements (most of the time, anyway)
 
I agree that we should not make fun of young M4 who already got accepted into radonc. That is fine.
I sincerely wish him the best bc he has committed to this field knowing what is going down the road.

This field still needs radonc residents but:
- Quality: YES.
- Quantity: NO, my wish list...reduce # spots to 80 a year and things will be fine.

I mean, post it publicly on twitter, and it might end up here. This is a weird tactic, and I hope that there is a rockstar URM applicant out there next year that does this before the match list is finalized, has a ridiculous ask list, and gets lots of free **** from the thirsty academic rad oncs that love trolling for URMs. I think it could be worth 5 figures if done properly.

I will say - 10 years ago, nobody would have said "I AM matching into Rad Onc" prior to Math day. All would have said "Hope to match into Rad Onc, fingers crossed!"

Not so fast 🤚! Everyone finds out if they match Monday. Can’t count chickens before they hatch. He may have to SOAP.
 
It probably counts as post interview communication if a PD bought a potential MS4 gifts prior to rank lists. Maybe it will come into play during SOAP?
 
Times sure have changed. I couldn’t even get a reply to my “I love your program” email and handwritten letters to my “number one.”

Now a days, PD’s are sexting med students (figuratively guys, relax).

Isn’t this shameful to pander to strangers to buy you gifts on Twitter? Yes, it may work, but ask your friends and family. We don’t post our wedding registry on Twitter (well at least not yet...). You don’t have to feel sorry for us who point out the obvious mate. It would be much different if this were not for him or if he was buying stuff for others.

It’s not my bag, but to each their own. Maybe PDs will actually buy him something. Personally prefer to donate to charity.

LOL. You know what, I contemplated buying it off eBay with the massive overcharge, but after this many months, it's my pride and the dang sunken cost fallacy that won't allow me to buy it off scalpers. Also I HATE THOSE SCALPERS AND REFUSE TO FEED THEM. Indeed, yesterday, I was in the que, then got on the wait line, and then still failed to get the PS5. Do you know how hard it is to get a legit PS5? Sorry, my wounds are showing LOL.

Bringing it back full ciricle, hopefully, in 5 years the new attendings can still afford a PS5.

Wow. So much to unpack here.

They are REALLY doubling down on the talking point that declining interest of medical students, which leads to declining competitiveness of applicants, actually means better doctors. I find this personally insulting as someone who matched 5 years ago.

Also, "missed out on artisans"?

This is the problem with leadership. For the past decade, we have had the highest percentage of MD/PhDs and research inclined folks out of any specialty, mostly all of them lured into the field under the guise of rich research environments, and idiots like Ralph Weichselbaum pissed it all down the drain, with no real research opportunities, all of which are held by the old guard (like at NRG/RTOG at the trial level), or forced into purely clinical positions (private or academic) without any opportunities for scientific pursuits. I am an MD/PhD, and I do not know anyone in my year who have a legitimate research position (clinical or lab-based) that came out of my cohort, once we realized what a scam this field is with the talents at their hands.
