Have invites died down? I haven't heard anything since Monday. Prior to that, I was getting several a week. Are programs done inviting and are now just waiting to fill in cancellation spots? I have more than 15 programs I haven't heard a peep from, not even a rejection yet.

Have you looked around on the forums to see if these programs have even sent out invites yet?

Several of them have. But I haven't heard anything and I haven't been rejected yet either. I don't know if they're just waiting until the end of the season to reject everyone at once or if they're holding on to some applications if cancellations should come up or if they're just not done going through all the applications and there's still hope. Luckily, I already got an invite to my top choice, but one of the places I haven't heard from is my #2 choice based on location (close to family) so I'm hoping it's the latter.

I just kept hearing that invites will continue through October, yet it seems the bulk have been sent and based on posts, many programs have filled their interview slots for the season. If that's true, invite season was a lot shorter than I expected.

So, do programs actually give rejection emails? Or, is it more silent rejections??

According to the forums about half of the programs to which I have applied have not and I've gotten iis to most that have, I am in the same boat as you. I think that some programs send them later, or I hope so at least. My last ii was Monday as well.

It's slowed to a trickle for my wife and I, whereas about a week ago we were getting a deluge. There seem to be a cluster of big names, especially in the NE, that are taking a long time because they can, at least in our specialties.

Would you mind sharing which specialties?

I've heard that most ER have gone out..

But not all. I don't think my home program has started sending out invites--it's making the people in my class very frustrated.

I haven't heard anything since last Monday (the 30th). If you don't count the hold and rejection I got today. I'm doing peds.

Med peds here and same story for me... Had a ton before MSPE went out then only 2 since October 1st. Nothing since the 4th except a "wait list" notice. I was under the impression the bulk would come immediately after MSPE released so it has been a very anti-climactic few weeks for me

I am applying for FM, and I have had radio silence also. I get one interview here and there, but I was expecting some more. But it looks like lots of people got interviews at places I thought I had a chance to interview. I guess I am the second tier of candidates. People please cancel interviews so I and people in my situation can get those spots 🙂

I've also have not received invites to programs I thought I was quite competitive; yet, I've received a couple of interviews to programs I thought were kind of a long shot. Strange how this process works. I've only received 1.5 invites in the past two weeks after a busy start, but I'm still hoping for a second wave of invites to be handed out again.

same here! nothing after the MSPE went out! I've read the dam thing like 4 or 5 times in the last week, just to make sure there isn't something I'm missing in it that may have scared programs away.

I'm worried there's something in the MSPE. I did get 4 interviews after it was sent out, but last week I got nothing and I'm worried...

It depends heavily on the specialty and individual school. Every school reviews applications and sends invites differently. Some do it all at once, some do it in discrete waves, some do rolling. Also, if you're applying in a specialty with lots of slots, they'll likely issue lots of invitations in multiple rounds. For something like neurosurg, they'll probably only issue one round, since there are so few slots/candidates.

The best way to tell what is going on is look at the interview thread on SDN based on your specialty (or on whatever forum is most popular for your specialty, e.g., uncleharvey for neurosurg). You can also check on last year's interview thread to see when particular schools issued invites, as they'll likely do something similar to what they did last year.

For me, I booked 6 interviews last week, but I think that has nothing to do with my qualities as a candidate and just with the way those school do their invites.

There are some big school that don't even look at the apps until the 15th of this month, so it's way too early to panic.

Totally depends on the specialty. There are a few fields in which less than a handful of programs have sent out interviews.

It's been about 4 weeks since applications went out (for those of us who applied on Sept 15th). I applied in psychiatry and got 12 interviews so far, with 7 coming out in the 2 weeks after applying, and the other 5 interviews coming out in the 2 weeks since the MSPE on Oct 1st. My last invite was 4 days ago on Oct 10th, as my email has been pretty silent since then.

These are just some number (n=1) from my side, for those who like things quantified.

I was worried about this also. No interviews for whole week, then 3 interviews came yesterday from Sept 15, application list. one IM New Maxico, 1 IM from Las Vegas, 1 FP from Salinas, CAlifornia.

panicking as I only have 3 interviews out of 21 applications, granted my application was completed late due to late application and LOR.

still early right? 🙁

Talk to your Dean's Office. (I assume) they know what they are doing. Have tons of experience. Go over your list with them, do as they say, and not skimp on more apps if they tell you to do so.

Also, what are you applying in?

Sincerely,
Someone who met with the Dean's Office this week to do the same.

switching to family medicine. 2012 MD AMG. I feel ashamed about approaching my student affairs dean, however, I'm strongly considering it. i did ask some of the programs if they are still sending IVs, and they are, just not to me and probably only after others cancel :scared:

Did you do a medicine prelim year? Have you considered finding a PGY2 spot for IM and then doing primary care after? Would save you a year.

I know nothing about position swapping, but if you check out the forum on SDN, there are some things that may interest you:

A friend who did FM last year was receiving IVs in Jan.

When I met with the Dean, she told me to go this document:
http://b83c73bcf0e7ca356c80-e8560f4...t/uploads/2013/08/programresults2009-2013.pdf
and look for programs that did not fill all their positions in the previous years and apply to them.

thanks for the advice, will do that.
