Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The optho resident who came in the thread and revealed personal info about me and drizz (post got removed).

However minimal the risk is, it's just not worth it.

oh lol. I guess I missed that. Sucks though. But I mean if you think about it... if a program is spying on you through forums and whatnot, it probably isn't a place you want to be at anyway you know? But that still doesn't mean you should go around talking **** either haha, not that either of you do.

I'd wager many if not most programs are absolutely exploiting Facebook, SDN, AM to try to identify people. Maybe not at the PD level, but I'm sure residents are, even at top programs. Post at your own risk! (It's not paranoia if everybody IS out to get me. 😉 )

Hi guys, do you think it is possible for an european IMG to dream about radiology in the states with a step 1 score of 245 and planning to have the same score on step 2? of course would do at least 3 month elective in the states.

the overall step 1 average has creeped up from a 221 to a 225 or so. i suspect the radiology average will follow suit, to about a 242.

charting outcomes 2011 is supposed to come out in August. so, any day now.

i really hate studying for step 2ck.
Where are you getting your information? That the overall avg of Step 1 creeping up to 225? Because you're wrong, I recently wrote the step (Oct 2011) and on my score report it says clearly in black ink that the avg amongst canadian and US med school students for Step 1 is 222. Nothing has changed as drastic as 225, and the average for Diagnostic Radiology is 235, so get your facts straight instead of regurgitating misinformation.

I believe 225 is the avg for American grads. 221 the average for everyone taking the test, img and amg.

DR average was up to 240 in this year's charting outcomes.

If you think his post is inaccurate you don't need to be so pointed about it, we're all friends here

The above information is correct. Radiology step 1 avg is definitely not 235. The most recent published data says radiology is 238 avg (2009) and the even more recent data shows avg step 1 of 240 (2011). If you need these references MedGirlDiva I can message you this directly from NRMP so you would not feel so offended. Please be collegial and get your facts straight.

This thread has gone to **** recently. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Anyone interview at NYMC- westchester, BI, Tampa or UMASS yet? I got those coming up in the next several days.

Yeah, weather has been miserable last couple of interviews that I have been on. I had to purchase an umbrella and coat!

Seriously, 30 degrees in Dallas???

Yeah Dallas is cold right now.

It was in the 30s in Arizona which is ridiculous.

I'm glad I haven't dealt with rain or snow yet but that will most likely change soon.

No kidding. I'm down in Houston and it is actually going to be warmer when I go to Baltimore on Sunday than it is here!!!

That and $40 cab ride ftl haha

Welcome to SDN. This is an anonymous forum. Take everything with a grain of salt.....

Who cares about step scores, after the interview invite it's old news.

Agreed. This is straight from UCSF's website: "In recent years, most of our interviewees have had three-digit scores of 240 or higher on Step 1. The small number of our interviewees with Step 1 scores between 200 and 239 have had offsetting factors such as a combination of top clinical grades at a competitive medical school and extraordinary research experience and academic promise. Once an applicant is selected for an interview, USMLE scores have little bearing on the final rank."

I'm not saying that everyone is necessarily on an even keel when they get to the interview stage, but I think that the interview and 3rd year grades are the most important factors that PDs consider when they make their final rank list. Obviously at research-heavy institutions, having done SOME sort of radiology research is most likely necessary to get ranked highly (or even get an interview in the first place)

Every program is different. UCSF is not the best example because they are the most selective program in the country so everyone interviewing there is going to have great board scores. Of course boards matter less when everyone is 250+.

Other programs have a wider range of scores and are more likely to take them into account.

I agree that the interview and 3rd year grades are probably more important but if two applicants both do well on the interview and have similar 3rd year grades the one with the higher Step is going to be ranked higher.

As much as some people like to think otherwise, most of us are not special and will not WOW anyone in the interview. The interview is important to see if you're a normal person they could work with and about fit. Very few applicants will wow someone in a 10 or 15 min interview. The interview is important because if you boot it it can absolutely kill your chances with no way to recover.

3rd year grades are important because there's probably a wider range to those than Step scores. It's easier to separate applicants based on 3rd year grades.

It was mentioned by someone on another thread but many programs most likely have tiers or groupings of applicants. It doesn't make sense to throw away the rank list you used to decide who gets an interview.

Nbme has a survey of what's important Pre and post interview, post interview the interview was the most impt factor.

I think you mean it's easier to separate medical schools based on 3rd year grades...

After a home run, a triple, and a double, a single is the best hit in baseball.

Dear 2012 Radiology Applicants and Interviewees,

To those who have interviews but do not plan on attending them or cancelling them for any reason (for example if you have prematched or have too many interviews or have decided to chance specialties etc...)- please do so asap so that the few of us who do not have alot of interviews and are on waiting lists have a chance at interviewing.

Thank You

This thing says personal statement was the most important thing to get an interview.. do you truly believe that? I htink the nRMP survey has its value but at this point in the process for us its all moot, arguing whats most important isnt worthwhile when we've already done all we can do

That's not what it said, it said 71% of PDs said it was an important factor.

My point was simply that the interview matters, a lot. It is interesting that post-interview contact wasn't considered an important factor.

How are interviews going for y'all this week?

I'm really starting to realize ranking is going to be difficult. Still trying to figure out exactly what I want/what I should be looking for in a program

Since my interviews are winding down I've thought about this. I've really enjoyed pretty much every place I interviewed at. Granted though some places were better than others. I haven't left any thinking that I'd have a bad experience at them. So my final ranking list will be based on location for the first 2 spots and then a combination of location and prestige the rest of the way down.

Nice. I had 2 this week and still have 6 left. I've gone on 8 so far and have really liked 6/8. I agree about location. Just don't know how much location will come into play over prestige especially since I haven't decided where I ultimately want to end up for practice.

I'm almost done, only 3 left!

i wanna clean out my schedule and not go to any more, I have no enthusiasm at all and ive already done 13. I feel like thats enough. I still have 4 more scheduled that I didn't cancel yet

The holidays were a nice break, I feel more rejuvenated!

I've been finding Auntminnie sort of annoying recently with all the talk of gloom and doom.

If you've already gone on 13 and at least a few of them were safeties, you should be fine now. Only 2 people didn't match last year with >12 ranks, and odds are if you don't match with 12 you probably wouldn't match with 25 - those individuals probably had severe red flags.

I was rejuvenated after break but I just had 3 in the past 4 business days so I'm tired again lol. Doesn't help that today was the longest interview day I've had. Thankfully I don't have another interview until Friday.

Only 5 left!

Anyone going to be at NYU on Friday?

I get in Thursday morning and I'll have a lot of time to kill before the dinner so I'd be down to grab lunch or whatever.

Do you guys have any opinions on Beth Israel, Lenox Hill and Jacobi NYC programs? They're the three I had in the city, I'm strongly considering putting them pretty high due to desires to live in the city, but I really am not sure how I wanna rank them. neither program gave me a real strong feel one way or the other and I'm not good at evaluating objective things.

No specific info on these programs but if you liked the programs I say rank them high. Location is huge.

its not my top choice, but it may be #2.. its currently a draw between tufts in boston and NYC programs

For location:

Beth Israel >= Lenox Hill >>> Jacobi

For reputation:

Beth Israel >> Lenox Hill >= Jacobi

Not sure where Tufts fits in with these - it's a university program so I would by default rank it higher than your NYC programs, but I've heard it has some issues.

interesting.. i would have thought jacobi had a better reputation..

What have you heard about tufts.. they all seemed super happy to me there and the program director was awesome

Maybe Jacobi > Lenox Hill in reputation - to be fair don't know much about radiology at Lenox Hill, but they're both near the bottom of the barrel in NYC (only programs clearly worse would be the usual suspects - Harlem & Bronx Lebanon, maybe LICH before the takeover by SUNY Downstate).

Anyone going to be in Boston on Tuesday?

Not on Tuesday, but am there this week.

And man, auntminnie has taken a turn for the worst this week. People are just using that reviews account to post complete nonsense about programs. I can only imagine how much worse it's going to get come February.
