Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They need a better system. For example like the NFLs injury report

Active - received interview
Probably - at the top of their waitlist
Questionable - somewhere on the waitlist
Doubtful - they don't even bother to contact you
Out - you've already been cut

*total blatant joke btw.. for those who don't follow nfl*

Hahaha

Vandy rejection received.

This week has not been good so far. 👎

Darn guys!

So I called programs to find out my app status, and a # of them told me that I'm not rejected and they plan on interviewing me if they had spots open. 🙁 I guess you were right, so many of the IV's have been given out! This is not good for me! 🙁

"interview slots filled" lol

Definitely thought that was unprofessional to have in the subject line. With a subject line like that they didn't even need to write anything in the body haha

But I guess it's better than the ambiguous subject lines.

The ones with "Program X Radiology Residency" seem to go either way but now I've conditioned myself to be pessimistic about those.

Ugh this sucks. NW dropped the hammer too

Are there a lot of programs who just simply don't send rejections? I have yet to hear from a lot of programs!

NW told me to get lost. Surprise invite from Vandy considering I've been batting much lower average on the non top tier programs.

To the cali people: California is still dormant (UCLA, UCSF, UCI, UCD, UCSD, USC, Stanford, etc.). Not to mention the other big namers that actually think they have a chance of poaching a west coaster (e.g. Hopkins in 2012mdc case). I predict good things soon. Note that I am speaking about you and not me, as I have already bought two pints of ben and jerry's for UCSF d-day

I hope you are right my friend.

Northwestern is the first rejection that actually hurts because it was one of the highest non-Cali programs on my list.

The South is telling me to get lost and I don't have a problem obliging (ATL or bust)

I got a vandy invite also and dropped by NW. I think me and 2012mdc are pretty similar applicants. So i think it has to do with individual people reading over your app

Vandy/Miami rejections today... I wasn't planning on attending either interview anyways, but yeah.

The Miami one is probably because they have filled their interview slots and they have people on the waiting list. I called and that's what I was told.

Dude WTF. How do I get an invite and you don't. This game is whack.

The process is a crapshoot.

My best rationalization is that my strong Cali ties and my numbers are leading a lot of the Southern programs, whether they are top tier or mid tier, to assume I won't rank them highly so they don't bother interviewing me.

Not shocked by NW as it is highly competitive but I was hopeful.

If you go to Auntminnie you can see the list of when interviews were offered and compare it to last year's list. If programs offer on one day and you don't get one, that's essentially a rejection.

Miami hasn't said anything to me. I guess the official hammer is coming soon.

Since they gave out invites a long time ago I've just treated it like a rejection. Same with programs like UVA and Michigan

Mid-tier programs typically interview about 100 people for 10 spots. If you assume that a mid-tier program is drawing from the top 1/3 of applicants, that's a potential interview pool of 400 people. If you assume they're saving a couple spots for home candidates, that might be 400 people interviewing for 8 spots. Even if you're in the top 100 candidates, there's a good chance you won't get an interview.

Top-tier programs on the other hand, might only be drawing from the top 100-150 candidates and interview 75-100. Therefore if you're in the top 100, you have a much better chance of an interview at the top tier program relative to the mid-tier.

I don't understand how I'm not more of a competitive applicant. I did one of the most competitive residencies that exist, yet I can't get into rads? Is it because I'm a gal? I don't get it.

You applied late and Medicare will only fund you for one residency so you may not have funding for all of your years of training. Rads is also one of the most competitive residencies.

I think Miami offered all their interviews before my transscript was even uploaded lol

Not true. People perpetuate this myth, but it's been discussed multiple times on SDN. Unfortunately, I think many PDs in radiology are misinformed, and this misunderstanding about how the funding works makes it hard to do a second residency in radiology.

Someone doing a second residency gets 50% of IME funding and 100% of DME funding, or about 80% of the total funding that a fresh grad would get.

I.e not fully funded.

Yes, precisely. Many people do a second residency, close to about 30% at this point, and on my end, I don't need funding if that were to be the case.
Do you think though, that this is causing a problem? Should I email/meet with PD's in places I have ties with or is it too late? I would be fine with doing rads where I went to school, sadly my app was downloaded the day their IVs went out.

Do you think it makes more sense for me to wait until the scramble? I've heard that the scramble has been changed for this year, and that last year there were >40 spots open?

I think it's an issue, esp since rumors are abounding about cuts in GME funding.

OK, this is getting on my nerves because I'm subscribed to this thread and I find this back-and-forth banter to be useless beyond the baseline level of hypervigilance we are already experiencing as ERAS e-mails hit our inbox.

Let me bottom line it for you: PDs are busy people. When there are hundreds of qualified applicants, they are looking for red flags in many instances. If you create a problem or are otherwise "atypical" in a not obviously good way (prior residency creating partial funding issues, leave of absence, low step 1 or step 2, no radiology elective or demonstrated interest in the field, lukewarm LORs), they will not hesitate to toss you in the trash bin. There are simply too many good applicants, even with the 15-20% drop experienced at some programs (great, now there's only 550 applicants for 8 spots instead of 700. get the picture?)

By applying late, taking a laissez-faire attitude to the process, you now will be forced to reap what you have sewn. Definitely contact PDs where you have ties particularly at your home program and express your strong interest to try and tally up the number of interviews you get. That's all you can do at this point. Be as proactive as possible, but don't be surprised by a poor outcome.

Hit my target of 16 interviews today. Feel good about matching chances now. Holding at 16 interviews, 5 rejections, 2 wait list. Now if I get any more interviews I can reject or cancel programs. The tide has turned. muahaha

On the down side I sent some "i'm interested in your program"s out, but i got back only that they were full or no reply. 🙁

GL everybody. I expect to see some killer matches from the superstars in this thread come april.

where oh where is uchicago? where or where could they be? 😎 Last year they sent invites 11/2. This year, crickets.

:xf:

Hopefully they'll be the 1st Chicago program to show me some love

Tomorrow was a huge day last year. UCSF, UCI, BU. USC, Mt. Sinai, and U. Chicago are also overdue. MGH should be notifying shortly as well, Duke and NYU early next week. Then it looked like Stanford notified just before Thanksgiving, finishing off with UCLA and UCSD at the end of November and Brigham on December 1st.

Cool beans.

I emailed the Monte PC a letter of interest last week, and they gave me an interview yesterday.

MGH has already notified some people. No idea what % of spots are taken though.

Yeah, I recently checked that - in prior years the notifications began on 11/10 or so and were every day or every other day up until just before Thanksgiving. The 11/4 notification this date is either highly atypical (some kind of god applicant, internal applicants from HMS) or a prank. No one I know received a MGH interview from the combination of IRL, SDN, and AM including multiple people who have gotten top interviews pretty much everywhere thus far and not one but two people who fall into that category and also did an away at a Harvard hospital.

Bottom line, it's still very much in the game.

One of my classmates who I trust said he got one. I don't know the ins and outs of his application but he's probably a pretty similar applicant to me.

But it's good to know most people haven't heard from them yet. Being waitlisted at BID doesn't give me too much hope though

Then he is in very rarefied company!

BID and BWH based on the thread I looked at just had one notification date, and presumably they fill up the few cancellations on a case-by-case trickle basis. MGH had 9 or 10 notification dates from 11/10 through 11/22 or something.

According to some people in the program, bwh notifies a few times, a few in late nov but most in dec.

The website corroborates the single date of 12/1 on AM but yeah I'd totally believe there are a handful of late Nov invites for away rotators and internals

Colorado waitlist. I've been getting killed post MSPE.

Hopefully the Cali programs come through in the clutch

Damn, the AM rejection thread is in full meltdown mode.

so I haven't heard anything from my top 5 programs and according to last year's AM interview thread, 4/5 show 1 date that interviews were sent out, and they were all between 11/1 and yesterday. Do you think now would be a good time to send out some emails to program coordinators specifying my interest in their program? or should I wait till say the end of the week?

thanks again and good luck

Same here. Still sitting on a whopping 3 rads and 7 TYs/prelims. No love at all from my home programs.

Time to drink until I can't feel feelings anymore:laugh:

It can't hurt, i'm not sure it'd make a difference at this point though. I sent an update letter to my top 12 programs last week and got two interviews, I'm not sure if I wouldn't have gotten them anyways though.

It could be worse... You could be applying to derm... My friend has 265+/AOA and pubs and applied to literally every derm program in the country and has 0 interviews...

I've read that PENN is considered to be a top hospital to train. Do you guys know if this refers to just Hospital of UPenn, or to Pennsylvania Hospital as well?
