Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

I would like someone's advice here please. So I've gotten about 7 IVs at this point, and there are a significant # of places I applied to, particularly by my med school region, that have not sent out IVs, have not started interviewing, etc. and where I have not been rejected either. Should I hold out for more, or possibly even match with the # I have, or would it make more sense to talk to my PD given that there is a rads program where I previously trained? Please take into account that I don't think I'd be awfully happy at this rads program and would hope to transfer in the future to a different one, but given that I applied late, it would certainly be better than not matching period. Just hoping for some opinions here.

More is always safer, but you stand a good chance to match with 7 interviews. It never hurts to ask your PD, you can always decide later that the program is not for you

Got like 6 rejections today, more than doubled my prior total lol

+4, whaaaaateeeeveeeeerrrr

I guess NYU was lying on their website. The next 4 days gonna be capital T tense

Dang USC brought the hammer down on a lot of strong applicants.

I'm already expecting the NYU hammer. Pittsburgh is my northernmost interview right now.

Dude Emory seems pretty awesome. Chillest residents I've run into so far.

Most of you guys are either from Cali or did an away. I have no ties whatsoever. Only hope is that strength of academic record and med school brand name might get me some pull, but I think this has been demonstrated clearly to be a heavily regional process.

Given the lack of cali ties, UCLA / UCSF / UCSD and Stanford are highly unlikely, my best bets at this point are NYU, Duke, MGH, and BWH. MGH is slowly destroying my psyche with its invite trickle torture.

Advice please guys. I scheduled an interview at a program earlier on that is in my city, but now I am thinking about not going. However, this hospital also has TY program and in their pre-interview information packet they gave me the info about the residency interviewer and my TY interviewer. However, the residency interview is in early December and the TY interview is in late January. I don't want it to look bad on me for the TY if I cancel the residency interview.... What do you guys think?

I mean, I don't want to do this interview and waste a spot for someone else who is more excited about the program. But at the same time I don't want to blow my shot at the TY, because I really want this TY.

I don't think it will have any effect on it. Separate programs, probably won't care if you don't do the rads IV. Just my 0.02.

Yeah I really like Emory's program.

Hopkins was actually chiller than I expected. I don't have a lot to compare to it but I liked it a lot.

Edit - also building a new hospital set to open next year. Looked real nice from the outside and a lot of new rads stuff will be in there - 11 IR suites and dedicated CT and MR procedure rooms.

5 done and in the books. Lots of places seem about the same in terms of teaching/facilities/etc. Don't really know how to differentiate.

How many TY/Prelims are you guys at? I have only 3 TY's and 1 prelim med. I'm kind of worried at this point because 2 of those are in CA and the other 2 are pretty coveted midwestern TY's, I don't want to have to scramble into a prelim surg/med in BFE or some super malignant program in a city.

I think I should add my home program's prelim medicine............... FML.

NYU invite for me too --- woohoo!

Anyone at Cornell today? I really loved it -- may be ranking it above much more "prestigious" places and may be putting it at #1! Super chill, awesome location, nice faculty.... Hopefully they liked me too 🙂.

Also got a very last minute Michigan invite for this coming monday -- ack! Clearly I wasn't their first choice 🙂. I'm kind of torn over whether to go since it's gonna be like five hundred bucks and if they really liked me they would have given me a little bit more notice (like, with the rest of the interview invites they gave out!)... but its a really good program and Ann Arbor is supposed to be real nice so I guess I'll be a sucker and fly out there....ughh

I'm going to 3 TYs (just for insurance) but my frost choice prelim has already told me I'll match, so not doing any more prelim surg.

Anyone want to trade nyu for Cornell? 😛

Haha.... just goes to show you that there's lots of individual preference with this stuff! I may well rank Cornell higher, but then I haven't seen NYU yet!

I'm doing 7 TYs... but my city has like 6 cush TYs in the immediate area 😀.

Definitely do whatever you can to avoid prelim surg (sorry there Drizzt) but I would not touch that @#$#@ with a 10 foot pole. Seriously!

3 TY's and 3 prelim med including my home program. Waiting on a couple more. Have my home program for the sole purpose of avoiding the scramble

Thats fair... I almost did surgery so the idea of a prelim year (or two in the case of a direct program) is hardly daunting. I would rather /wrists than have to do any more medicine months.

Yeah man. Really dumb of me in hindsight. I applied to mostly TY's in the region of my med school and the West Coast. And I applied to prelim meds only in CA. I didn't apply to my own programs prelim med. I'm gonna add that right now onto ERAS, hope it isn't too late.

I'm thinking about adding a select prelim surg or two.............. I'm not a fan of IM wards at all. I enjoyed surgery more as a student, but I'm not sure if surgical intern year is very enjoyable at all.

You have to pick the right program. Certain ones are more operative than others.

Can anyone recommend prelim programs in the Chicago area? Any insight in the community prelim med programs in that area?

To be honest I'm kind of shocked that I didn't get a NYU invite, it's a pretty neuro-centric program and nearly all of my substantial research is in neurorads/neurointerventional rads. It is what it is though, I find it very unlikely I would have ended up there anyways but still.

I guess I'll contribute and vent a bit.

Didn't get NYU today, which was the most painful rejection of the season. Got the Cornell band-aid on the way home from a prelim IV, but I'm still bleeding.
I'm at a Manhattan med school, non-rads PhD in neuroscience (lots of pubs), neurorads project with ASNR oral presentation submitted, ~270 step I.

I used to think I'm as strong a candidate as any and should at least get to check out some of the top places. The season so far has been disappointing. Not really sure what gives, but I'm somewhat resigned to match at any academic program. UPenn rejection, same for BIDMC, UMaryland, silence form Hopkins and others.

UNC and Boston U rejections. NYU invite.

A few other interviewees at Hopkins received the same rejections. We all laughed about it.

UNC rejected me, BU gave me a very specific waitlist email, it wasn't like the other emails that were like 'oh well just keep your file in case a spot opens up. I didn't even get a decision from NYU today, i dunno whats up with taht, seems like everyone else did.

Got that same BU waitlist email. Not holding my breath. I do hear they have one of the bigger entering classes around (in northeast standards). Whatever. Only applied there to tag it in case I head out to Boston for some bigger name IVs. But since those are not forthcoming, I probably wouldn't go anyhow.

Any recommendations for prelim surgeries in the west coast? I'm going to shotgun like 10 in ERAS tomorrow. I am just trying to research as much as I can tonight. There goes another non-studying for CK night, lol.

NICE dude.

Duke should be soon. Really interested in this program.

Yeah, waiting on Duke as well. I hope I can schedule them in December.

Still waiting on the big cali ones as well as Loma Linda and Cedars. Up to 10 now and probably won't be canceling any of them. Just depends on how the scheduling works. I guess I could go on up to 15 if I'm lucky enough to get Duke + the big 4 in Cali

I'll be living in SoCal in January so that makes it relatively easy to knock out multiple Cali IV's in a row.

For sure. I'm going to be in CA in January at least until Jan 17. Hopefully I can schedule all the CA ones before that.

Loma Linda should be out by tonight, based on my talk with the PC about 1 week ago. She said they were swamped with near 300 applications. So maybe they will still take another day or two.....

Just checked into this thread and wanted to clarify that Duke only interviews in January.

Great job to you all so far! Best of luck on interviews 🙂

Thanks for that info. Hopefully I only have to make 1 east coast trip in January.

It's actually really interesting how we have very little overlap in our IVs given we have the same stats haha, hopefully we'll continue to get most of the CA programs tho!

It is kind of interesting but not too surprising considering the differences in research and region.

I have no ties to the midwest so I'm striking out there and the lack of research hurts at places like MIR and Penn. The strong Cali ties also made almost every Southern program wary most likely. I am surprised by what happened with NYU though since I have no ties and hadn't been getting programs in competitive locations (outside of CA) like NW and UW.

Good luck to everyone waiting on the big 4 Cali programs. Only a couple weeks left of waiting 👍

Don't sell yourself short, you also got a Hopkins interview!

Dear UCSF and Stanford: It's now mid-November. I'm feeling good on account of NYU. Let's rip the band-aid off. I'm ready, let's do this.

Dear Duke: please give me an interview. I'm not afraid of Durham. You probably have the best educational experience in the country.

Dear MGH: I am convinced that your slow trickle of invites is deliberately designed to drive the more neurotic applicants among us crazy.

Dear BWH: December 1st. Seriously?

Dear Prelim Medicine and Surgery programs, hook me up... I'm scared of the scramble. :scared:

Dear the rest of the Radiology programs, reject me or offer me an invite now please. I have run out of money and need to hit up bank of mom and dad, but need to know how much to ask for. Thank you.
