hi all, question about publications and successful radiology match.

I know radiology is a ROAD specialty indicating some degree of competativeness to the match. However, it is nowhere near as competative as plastics and derm - two specialties that I've been told require publications IN their fields to match. I've also been told ophtho applicants should have 'in field' pubs for a successful match.... herein lies my question...

My question is: do I need publications in radiology to match sucessfully, and if so to what degree will not having one hurt my application at the very best residencies? I have a few publications in fields that are not radiology because I didn't have interest until this year (3rd year of medical school). I realize any publication looks good, but to match into the very best programs, should I start radiology research NOW in hopes of an 'in field' publication?

Am I being too neurotic? I've enjoyed all of the research that I've done in the past but I'd like to go to a "top" (i.e. academic) radiology program because I am very interested in an academic career.

Thanks for your input.

Rads is a field in which it is "easy" to match in that the match rate is high, that being said, there are a TON of residency spots, and even with that, the average step 1 is 241, suggesting it's much higher at the top programs. The top programs are as competitive as any field (average step 1 250-260) and most applicants have a lot of research, much of it in radiology. You may want to check out the radiology forum and the 2012 applicants thread to have an idea of what people are working with. There are a lot of us with 260+/AOA with 20+ pubs/presentations (in rads); getting into the top programs isn't so easy. I've gotten interviews at about 50% of my programs so far with the stats/info above, although a lot more should come after the MSPE is released.
