Do a search on auntminnie for this topic...there are entire threads dedicated to ranking the CA programs.

On a side note, while the Naval Medical Center San Diego program is very strong, it is only available to Navy physicians, so unless you are Navy, pretend it is not there.

On yet another note, matching Rads in CA is impossible unless you are an allstar. There is a very minute bias towards taking their own, but that only goes so far. You need to have really high USMLE scores, good letters, +/- AOA, research, blah blah blah for most programs in CA to even look at you.

Does this apply to the David Grant Program too? Only Air Force physicians?

Yes. Military programs are only open to military physicians. If you want one of them, then you need to join the military prior to starting the training.

so it is that competitive for even the lower ranked programs in Cali?

"Lower ranked" programs in Cali do not exist in the traditional sense. Some may speak of some programs being better than others, but the weaker CA programs are going to often be more competitive than some big-university/high ranked programs in other regions.

Bottom line, there is no program that is easy to get into in CA. You need to be an allstar on paper to even be considered. Most CA programs will have between 500-1000 applicants for 10 or less spots.
