Rand Paul meets an anesthesiologist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Obviously Anesthesiology hours must not be that bad after residency if you have time to go attack a senator.

Obviously US Senator hours must not be that bad either if Rand is able to mow his own lawn back in his home state on a Friday afternoon. I think the anesthesiologist is retired. This is Dr. Boucher’s patented Therm A Vest if anybody is curious.

I wonder if those help with rib fracture pain.

I just got around to reading this story. Did Rand Paul, a libertarian, really own a home in a community with a homeowner's association?
Heh 😀

This thread just keeps on giving.

Great Z's: The Anesthesiologist Who Attacked Senator Rand Paul Is Sentenced

"During the court hearing, we find out that Senator Paul was not as seemingly innocent as first appears. It seems that the two neighbors did indeed have a longstanding dispute over lawn maintenance. Senator Paul dumped a bunch of grass and tree clippings right on the property line between the two. This was no ordinary pile of leaves. This was a 10 foot by 5 foot stack that sat there for a few weeks.

When Dr. Boucher complained, the senator did nothing about it. Eventually the doctor brought in a dumpster and had it hauled away himself. Then Senator Paul did the same thing again. Then again the anesthesiologist had a dumpster come remove it. This repeats itself several more times. At one point Dr. Boucher even set the pile of grass on fire, burning himself in the process. He asked for the homeowners association to do something about this but they were not responsive.

The last straw came when Senator Paul, who sounds like a big dingus, blew grass clippings over into his neighbor's house. That's when the doctor turned rogue and blind sided the senator. Sounds like Rand Paul was the neighbor from hell. Wonder how he is taking care of his lawn this year?"

If I were looking at neighbors, I'd be more concerned with someone who can't control their anger and physically assaulted a neighbor than the one who dumped grass clippings on a mutual property line.

I can't believe this was even made into a blog post.

I'd rather have the guy who finishes stuff, not the guy who starts it for no reason

That's cool. You can live next to whomever you want. I doubt this is the whole story. It's probably somewhere in the middle of the two.

I still would not rather live next to a guy who is actually known to be violent. I'm curious what the neighbors that border the other property line think.

They think “I’m not going to leave grass clippings near this guys yard”

Yeah, sure no one wants to live next to a violent person if given the choice. No one wants to live next to a total dbag either. Rand Paul poked the bull one too many times, the horns were expected. Let’s also not pretend that it’s very likely the neighbor went through the necessary avenues to have someone reprimand Rand Paul or hold him accountable, all of which of course failed because of who Paul is.

I would have punched him too. Nothing aggravates me more than passive aggressive sissy-ness. I bet the other neighbors bought this guy a couple beers for his trouble.

Leave it to a Libertarian to have no regard for the “externalities” of his behavior. It’s the political ideology for petulant toddlers.

Right, because when I think about how the initiation of force, or threat of force, against a person or their property cannot be justified, a toddler is the first thing that comes to mind.

Governments are elected by the people and represent the will of the people in a Democracy. So if the local government were to levy a fine or other penalty against Rand Paul for dumping his lawn waste on someone else’s yard, it would not be an improper imposition of force, but rather the upholding of a set of common rules agreed upon by elected representatives. Our government is not an alien force, it is a representative of the body politic. Libertarians just don’t want to be held accountable to their neighbors for their actions. Like petulant toddlers who want your to throw their pudding at you but don’t want to be disciplined.

Again, your toddler analogy is faulty. Throwing pudding onto another is an act of aggression, and not justified from the get go. Your understanding of libertarianism is rather limited. When you think about libertarianism, think about things like, "the rights of your fist end where my face begins," and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," rather than Cartman going, "whatever, I do what I want!" In general, libertarians don't want anyone's rights infringed upon, not just their own.

Regarding this particular incident, if Rand Paul didn't want to live in a place with an HOA, then he should have picked a different neighborhood when he was moving there. It is particularly ridiculous, though, in your example, that you are equating a fine from the local government with a neighbor assaulting him. A fine for knowingly violating an agreed upon rule is entirely different from a neighbor unable to contain his rage, and taking matters into his own hands. The neighbor is the dingus aggressor, here, and should get no sympathy.

I am not commenting on the aggressive neighbor, I am merely stating that it is consistent with Libertarian ideology to dump your waste on someone else’s lawn. Libertarians have an intellectual habit of ignoring the broader repercussions of their actions and becoming angry when government intervenes to act on behalf of those broader (public) interests. Rand Paul is consistent in this small mindedness. Libertarianism is the intellectual midget of all political ideologies.

You're still wrong. Dumping waste onto someone else's property is not consistent with libertarianism, as it is damaging another's property. Seriously, do you know anything about this topic?

I’ll concede that libertarians can mentally cope with a simple 1:1 cause and effect impact of their actions. That being said, any more complex issue, externalities of business decisions, the social benefits of progressive tax policy, the need for effective regulation to protect the public interest, basically anything that interferes the “self-interest” of the atomized individual seems to escape the grasp of libertarian thought. So yeah, not surprised he was cool with dumping his waste on his neighbors lawn. He probably didn’t pay his HOA fees either.

You're still making ridiculous, untruthful, broad statements about a group of people and ideas you do not seem to understand.

That’s fine. I’ll just continue to judge them on their policies and actions. My gestalt seems to fit the bill on this standard. Read plenty of Hayek and Milton Friedman (even that silly Ayn Rand stuff), but I guess I don’t know anything about it. As long as we keep these folks away from the levers of power, I’m all set.
