do they tape it? they showed us video of new interns at out hospital being put in situations where they had to run a code during a lecture on "teams" or something.

if they put you in a group beary make sure you say, "we need to get someone else in here." 👍 that was the secret.

They better not tape it. I think I will just say, "We need to get someone else! I'm just a pathology HO!"

hey A......do you just not need sleep anymore?

I could never sleep the night before a new rotation. I am having trouble sleeping now starting residency. You should see me trying to get to work in the mornings. Every day I have to get a map of the medical campus, find out what building I am supposed to go to, then get a map of Ann Arbor and figure out how to drive there, and then get out my map of the parking structures to figure out where to park.

at our hospital the whole point of the exercise was to see how long it would take one of the interns to say that they needed help. they timed it, it took like 6 minutes before someone said that they needed to call anesthesia to get the patient intubated.

the poor interns looked so lost. it was a mannequin they were working on but the stats kept dropping and alarms were going off and they were all standing around like... "um... um....". the major thing they wanted us to learn was that ONE person has to take the lead. there were like 4 interns and they all just stood next to eachother talking about what they might need to do. one girl was doing all the compressions and no one offered to relieve her even after you could tell she was getting tired. at the 6th minute is when they said they needed help.

Hey, I intubated somebody once.

I was just thinking about having to take Step 3. I am actively purging all clinical related info from my brain and anything patient-related irritates me. I need to get over this.

That will serve you well in med school. Sometimes your superiors act like they don't want to be bothered and they are always pushing you to be more independent. It's a tough balance.

Practically the first thing they told us on our first day of orientation in path was to ask for help if we weren't 100% sure. Say somebody has a specimen and you gross it in wrong - you can't go back and just get more.

take it ASAP then beary. you can take it whenever you want this year right? just take it before you forget it all. 🙂

i have a friend who just graduated last month and i think she already took step 3 even before starting residency. her username is canes2006, do a search to see how she was able to do it.

Interesting. Is there any suggestion to who should take the lead? If they're all the same level or something? Sometimes someone just naturally takes the lead but I wonder what to do if nobody does. I'm not a natural leader and can totally see myself just standing around like that. I may take the lead sometimes if I clearly knew more than other people around, but that's about it.

Yeah I will take it ASAP. I was going to study for it during my vacation, but then just wanted to do vacation (and was moving, etc.). And now I just want to really focus on path. But the longer I wait the worse it will be. It has only been a few months since I took Step 2. I need to sign up for it soon.

nope, it was filmed during their orientation. i know what you mean though, its weird to take the lead when you're all at the same level but while they were just talking about what to do the "patient" was crashing. just call for help beary and you'll pass for sure.

mushy needs to add that beary quote to her signature.

Haha! I was thinking of my quote the other day - we gross in placentas on our autopsy months. That seems extremely random to me.

I really am a pathology HO in both senses of the word. I really want to be good at it.

Yikes Nikki. Maybe you should change it. I got semi-stalked by phone a few years ago and had to change my number. *hug*

If it happens again call the phone company. They can put a tracer on your phone to track things even if the number is withheld.

Well, y'all were up late. I crash out at 11 and somehow y'all keep it up until 3 and then pull it together for a "real" day in the morning. Impressive. I have so much to learn. 😉

Morning, everyone!

wow- they were up really late! I slept from 1 to 7:15- again up before that magical 8am hour. 😡 tonight is the open house at my office- which yours truly is in charge of planning. we didn't ask for rsvp, so we could have anywhere from 10 to 100 people show up. I think sleep will come quickly tonight.....
