Random non-MCAT and only peripherally related to the MCAT thread - Part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I figure that somewhere only around 8000 people did better than me on that test and every friggin one of them post on SDN. Damn you all, hahaha. Sucks to get a good score, that most people would give their left nut for, just to read 50 millions posts of people makin 9000Z's, in the 102nd percentile. Oh well, congrats to everyone who gang raped the MCAT, YOU GUYS ARE FREAKIN GENIUS. I'm serious, it really is amazing how well some of you did. Congrats to all.

I got a 32P, 11V, 11P, 10B
up from a
27Q last Aug.

Scentimint--CONGRATS on the improvement!! Be proud of yourself--with your great grades and extracurriculars you are gonna be just fine!! That score is solid--I know plenty of people who got into med school with scores like yours 👍 👍

Definitely! That score would keep you solidly in the running even without the fantastic research and academic record that you've got. 🙂

thanks for the support, guys. i really appreciate it. *hugs to all*

i'm going to sleep. maybe i'll have a different opinion tomorrow. 🙂
Go for it Scenti!!! I got 29P and I guess that's the score I'll use for Md/Phd... Good luck!!! Let us know how it goes!

First, i'm sorry for posting this in this thread, but the people that post a lot in here generally seem to make the most sense to me, so I was wondering what you think of this situation

I've never done this "what are my chances thing" because I know how annoying it can be, so I feel like a total hypocrite, but my mcat sort of set me straight.

I got a 29P ( 10 PS / 9 VR / 10 BS / P WS)
GPA 3.91
BCPM GPA 3.94
Bioengineering Major

Pretty typical EC's, nothing saving the world, but volunteering, clubs and orgs at school, summer research........

The thing I am worried about is the PS score. I was really always good at physics, and am stunned/dissapointed in my score (i know a 10 is good, but i was averaging 12/13's and never got lower than an 11) I never took general physics in college because I had earned AP credits, and I was an engineering major so I have enough physics related stuff to cover it.

Anyway, I was just wondering what you guys think about this situation. Do you think schools will look down upon that fact that I have a high gpa but only did average on the PS? I'm worried about this whole mcat "matching" gpa. Is that just crap or do schools really look at it that way?

god i sound like one of those people 🙁

I don't really know anything about MCAT matching GPA. I would recommend that you do the same thing I think everybody should do - apply to a range of schools, including your dream school and some that may be less competitive. A lot of it is a crapshoot anyway. When I was applying to med school, I got acceptances at some schools that would on paper be considered more competitive than some I got rejections from. Same thing for residency, actually, in that I was heavily recruited by some very competitive programs and not at some less competitive programs.

Edit: PS, your avatar makes me want to change mine to Tom Osborne.

Hon, 10 is not average. 8 is average. Your scores are all above average. I know that SDN skews people's perceptions, but no one is going to look down on your PS score. 🙂

i have a 3.7 at nyu and decent ec's, but i didn't do so hot on the mcat (29) i was aspiring to go to an ivy league school, is that definitely out of my reach?

thanks for the advice beary. I'm not planning on taking the MCAT again, I don't think my score justifies doing so. Unfortunately, I think I could do better if I did, but it's not worth it....i'm not looking to go to only "the best" schools.

ps. tom osborne can go shuck some corn..... and 1994 was a joke! 🙂

yea geez i know this was a stupid post but I had to just cause i'm dissapointed but thanks for your response!

Seeing people get upper 30's and 40's on SDN can hurt.....just need to keep reminding myself that this is the 99.99999 percentile or whatever....

I am actually. I don't even have a good reason. Well, I guess I have ACLS. I usually drink a little wine in the evening but tonight I threw in some vodka and that's hit me a bit harder. 🙄

wine and vodka? that sounds like a nice combo, but what kind of wine? How does it taste?

I know. I keep reminding people of how skewed SDN is all the time. The 50th percentile on the MCAT is a 24-25. A 30 is about the 75th percentile. 33-34 is the 90th percentile. Those people with 40+ scores are in the top 0.1-0.2%, and they're few and far between. It's just that so many of them post on SDN. 😉

hahaha dude, amen. i got a 31P, which i was happy about... until i got onto sdn. "yay, i got a 44 R!!" "wheeeeee, i got a 43T!!!!". hahahah

Man! You guys rock! I am humbled to be in your cyber presence. WTG! Holy cow! I wish I stayed awake last night, but the boards were too slow...now I know why. Everyone was congratulating our uber-smart random peeps.

Way to friggin' go!

I'm so glad I never have to take that *(*^%&*%# test ever again! Congrats to everyone, we finally made it! 😀

Be happy with your scores, you all did great! If you didn't do so hot, keep working hard towards your goals. It took me 3 times to break 30+, but I won't let even the MCAT stand in my way towards becoming a physician, and neither should you. In the end, we will all be physicians if we want to! 🙂

After the test I said I was "neutral", but now I'm slightly disappointed. I'm now considering my options open with a possible retake in January.

Congrats again to everyone!!!

I am a chardonnay fan, and pretty cheap ones (Yellow Tail, Kendall Jackson, Simi is at my high end). I think it tastes really good. I don't really like vodka straight up but adding a bit of vodka to your wine really just leaves the taste of the wine.

haha, same here. we have some amazing test takers in this thread! 😀

I'm going to talk to my pre-med advisor at BU about my score, but my current opinion after some serious thinking is that it seems my best bet is to go for the applications with my current score so that I can get my app in early (rather than wait and see if i can do better in August, which there's no guarantee that I'll be able to do). If I end up having to re-apply, then I'll take the MCAT again when it's much shorter and on the computer! 😀

But seriously, congrats to everyone in here. I'm so impressed! 😀

I agree scenti, I don't really have any better than you (29P) and i'm a little bummed about it but i'm not taking that bitch again. You are gonna get interviews, and that's the key; you will knock them off their feet once you do!

Florida schools don't avearge your scores. If you would like, I'll send you a list of people who you should talk to at USF med school for advice now that your application is complete just so you know where you stand in the application cycle. It seems to me that you have a fairly decent chance at the Florida schools except possibly for UF which is even hard for the super uber high up there applicants to get into sometimes.

Send me a PM if you want those contacts. I sent the same PM to other Floridians on here.

S&M, don't be down on yourself though. You did a great job as well. You worked really hard and scored well. Just because you didn't score in the 99th percentile doesn't mean you didn't do well! Sheeesh girly! Seriously... 😍 😍

not great at all...but not terrible enough to not apply. it's kinda frustrating. but i don't think i should take it again. i got a 28N (10 PS, 8 VR, 10 BS), and that's 3 points up from last august (25Q). i dunno, what do you guys think?
I echo guju's sentiments. I know many people with excellent gpa's and activities (such as yourself) that broke average on the MCAT and went to EXCELLENT schools. Good luck :luck: And remember, not everyone can be perfect 😎 Something I have learned to just accept. I'm sure my scores next year will be below yours :scared:

thanks Pdubs & mushy! I'm trying not to be down on myself. I really think it's a fine score for straight MD programs, but it is definitely on the low side for MD/PhD. That's the thing I'm worried about. But here goes! I'm doing it anyway 😛

Silly perfectionist in me!
Thanks for the 😍!

Well talk to your advisor and see what she thinks (if you trust her) I do know some schools that require 30 as the minimum for joint programs but ask beary, she would know best. Maybe someone on the MSTP thread as well?

and how is everyone post mcat?
doing a little better than last night, i guess 🙂

I'm realizing that it's better to have my 28 (10-8-10) than to have a 32 with some weird distribution (e.g. 13-6-13).

Argh, I'm not the kind of person to get down on myself. Trying to keep the spirits up! Tonight I'm going to dinner at my old PI's house, so that should be fun! He'll ramble on for half an hour or so about how stupid the MCAT is and how he thinks that it doesn't test your ability to succeed in med school and/or become a good doctor.
