Anybody ever been to a Quaker Steak and Lube?

I totally want to go there. We don't have any in Michigan. (I have never been, but my folks told me about it, plus I 😍 auto racing).
DUUUUUUDE!@ i love quaker steak and lube. i was sooooo happy when they put a stand in both of the new stadiums in pittsburgh...it makes you actually want to go see a pirates game (just to get the wings, though...the pirates are pretty terrible).

Hey quick question,

How many of you went/go to an undergrad that requires a public speaking class to graduate?
Hmm, none here...but I think we engineers are exempt from pretty much anything...and it's kind of unfortunate! No language requirement is what really pisses me off...I love taking language classes and even thought of being a Spanish major or double minor, but the biomedical engineering curriculum at BU is so packed full of stuff that it's really hard to fit in any sort of liberal arts minor b/c of all the extra classes required.

JLW...I will call you later. When I get on the road...will have plenty of time to yap then. 😀

Y'all, I have no idea what the heck is up with me. I just fell down the stairs. Not my fault. The chow puked there. I didn't see it. Slip....bam...ouch...ouch...bang. I think I hit my head, but I am still alive so that's a good sign. Why does this dog have to have such a delicate stomach? She puked up the WATER she had just consumed. Darn chow. And on the stairs? Doesn't she know that water on wood creates a hazardous situation? I already have bruises coming out. Dang. The bruises from the car wreck just went away! WTF? I swear, someone is going to say something about domestic abuse..I just know it. And...to tell the trusth will sound just like an excuse. I mean, I do actually walk into doors and walls and bang my hands on grocery store shelves. Seriously, I don't mean to minimize domestic violence, but that is what it easily looks like from the outside. 😳
awww, poor PW!! I hope you are ok. If it makes you feel any better, I bruise like a peach! 😛

So we just had a patient come in basically having a heart attack and it made me really upset. EMS came and everything. I feel like a wuss crying over something like that. You guys that are in med school/residency, do you ever get over that?
I know how you feel, Ana. You're defnitely not a wuss for feeling like that. It will probably let up eventually, but it's definitely a normal reaction.

Hey, quick question everyone (I'm afraid to ask it in any other place or I'll get blasted).
I just got an email from TPR, and it looks like they're very happy with my 11 in PS and asked my if I'm interested in teaching PS there.
At first I was excited, but then, how would students look at being taught by an undergrad Junior who didn't really do that well on the MCAT?

I have an amazing intelligent friend who got a 30 and she taught for Kaplan--she was a great teacher. I think they give you extensive training and it pays well--so heck i would go for it--I know my friend got around $17/hour. Also--she taught in the areas she was strongest in--she didn't teach in all the subject areas. They wouldn't ask if they didn't feel that you could do it--I think an 11 in PS kicks ass.

Thanks Nikki, made me feel much better about the whole thing! 🙂

ana you are human--not a robot. Don't feel like a wuss--I can only imagine that it would be very upsetting.

Ana, 😍 you too! 🙂 Q teaches for Kaplan, not TPR.

Eddy: You should go for it! 11 in PS is awesome, most def 🙂 You would make good money and get free/discounted prep for yourself if you did end up deciding to take the test again!

how is that biolage? i think i want some
biolage is great. that's the shampoo i use. they have all different formulas that you can get...i get the super moisturizing one b/c i have split ends. that would probably work well for post-swim hair. and if you keep your peepers peeled, you can find a good deal on the jumbo-sized bottles.

One of my friends tripped over her dog in the middle of the night, fell, and hit her face right on some furniture. She got a big shiner and it turned out that one of the bones around her eyes had broken. It looked EXACTLY like she had been beat up. (Not at the situation of course, but at what everybody thought.)

Sort of. Every once in a while a situation will just really get to me. I did my sub-I on peds onc and telling kids and their families that they had cancer ALWAYS made me literally feel sick. It depends on the patients too - what type of relationship you have with them.

So you will sort of get over it, but not all the way, and I don't think it's really good to get over all the way. At least at this point in my career I'm not all the way over it. I even feel that way sometimes in path making a bad diagnosis when I've never even met the person.

will I need to take the GRE before I apply?

Probably not. Look carefully at the websites of individual institutions you are applying to. If one says you do, call and ask because it's likely not enforced. Another thing you'll see is that you need to take it before starting grad school - again, not enforced. I was the only person in my class of 5 who ever took it and I wouldn't have needed to.

Yeah, that's the impression I got from most of the websites that I read through. I am definitely not taking that unless i need to 🙂

Hey megboo,

How do you get started riding a motorcycle? I continue to have fantasies about getting one. I know that some of the dealerships have classes, but in order to even take that class, you have to have a license, which it looks like you get from taking a class at a community college. Is this what you did?

Also, approximately how much does a decent motorcycle cost? Once I get a few paychecks and pay off all my moving expenses I should have a little moulah.

I'll update Sat. afternoon after my PT.
 nice. works for me.

i read your later post quickly and thought you said you just read 300 pages of the bible to help with your MCAT studying.

So I just got back from bombing perhaps the easiest test (intro to psych) i've taken at Penn State, what a way to go out!

Also finished my last speech. I initially came into this class thinking it would be a great prep for interviews later this year, but after taking it I realize how wrong I was. I think it's because they really emphesize the formalities of going up in front of an audience and talking. It's more of a performance than anything, and I feel like I didn't get much out of it (I have no idea why they make us take it). I really don't see myself using any of the strategies I learned for an interview other than the practicing of talking out loud 😡

Anyway, hopefully your schools have or will make it a little more useful if you have to take it.

Time to sell back books I never opened...........

My parents went through an early mid-life "crisis" if you will in the mid-90's and decided to get their motorcycle licenses and buy bikes. They encouraged my brother and I to also get our licenses, too.

In Illinois, there is a Motorcycle Rider Safety Program that you can take - it's a Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday course where you learn to ride and take your test at the end, and it costs $20 for the whole thing. This is what I found for Michigan: http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627_29889---,00.html

Anyway, shortly after the class I got my first bike.

Depending on the engine size, a new bize can cost anywhere from $3500-$20,000+! It all depends on the make, model, etc.

If you're just looking to cruise around town and 2-lane highways and occasional interstate, you'd be ok with less than 600cc. If you are going to be on the interstate frequently, you'll need more than 600cc.

Example costs: Honda Rebel (250cc) $3099, Honda Shadow (600cc) $5400, Kawasaki Vulcan (500cc) $4900, Yamaha V-star (600cc) $5800, Yamaha Virago (250cc) $3500, Harley Sportster 883cc $6500

If you can afford to buy it up front, I would look at bikes that are a couple years old with low miles. Harley's hold their value really well, though, so if you bought one today, you'd likely be able to sell it for close to purchase price someday.

every time i've heard someone say they were just taking ochem for review lamented how tough it still was.

just saying.

and i just had the final. yay multiple guess
