Yeah, they actually say the same thing about people applying to UMiami straight-MD from other states...They say min GPA 3.6 and MCAT at least 30+.

wow, the mcat minimum use to be 28 for out of staters and 26 for in staters for the straight MD, they must have raised it recently.

I got thrown into the deep end after I replace myfavred and I still never really got a good feeling of who was who.

my instinct was always to lynch shelley, thats what i get for dismissing irrational thoughts.
haha, yeah, definitely. I thought it was vhawk b/c he/she was the first to vote for amsie, but then everyone votes for amsie first, so that was just a guess.

teaching really is one of my loves. if i wasnt going to be a doctor, i would be a teacher. .

Not me. Kudos to the teachers, but it's not my bag.

I "teach" 0-3 year olds every day, and I taught a speech and hearing science course to undergrads when I was a doc student.

NO THANKS!

Ack! I calculated my science GPA wrong! 😱 Below 3.5, that's not good. I'm going to miss some cut-offs now.

S&M: you're going to rock it. I want to read your ps when you're done.

Which reminds me, PW: what did you think of my PS? It's all submitted and done but I'd love to know.

I think I'll go make some coffee now.

Heh, you'll have to sink lower than that to catch me! At least I'm not using the 2.9 or 3.0 that I graduated with. I'm hoping the screening regimes aren't too GPA-focused. I guess between us, we'll find out. :luck:

Oh yeah because a gpa from Texas A&M is SO comparable to a gpa from Caltech.

Because anything the rest of the states do, we can do better.

Real answer: to maximize the number of people getting spots in TX off the bat through a match system. (so we don't lose them to other states)

ahh i see

freakin rebels 😉

I'm such a loser. I hope you'll forgive me for never getting back to you. Like I told you, it had great info and a great story (yours 😍)....my only suggestion was a change in verbiage. But, you're not gonna need my help. 😉

BTW - how do you like T-Mobile? My Nextel contract is up and looking for cheaper service....

Incredibly satisfied. We have had them for almost 4 years and I just signed up for 2 more. I can't say that about ANY of the other companies. Ugh. They are still growing so maybe the reception isn't as strong in some areas, but it improves almost daily. Highly recommend. 👍

Ok, need food...it has been another whirlwind weekend of driving and stuff...will post about it later, but now I need food. Unfortunately, we have nothing but string cheese and Clif Bars in the kitchen since it is still under construction. Gotta go out. Dang, I hate restaurants...enough eating out. :barf:

My Sci GPA will be around 3.4, unless I decide to take some upper-level bios and rock them, but by the time I finish them, I will (hopefully) be off the interview trail.

I'm not worried with a 3.4 science and 3.4 overall undergrad, as long as my MCAT score is >= 30. I've seen a lot worse get in to great places!

Ack - I remember you telling me that now. Sorry about that!! 🙁

Yeah. I write things I think I'd like to include in my PS when they pop in my head. I'm going to try to tackle it in Dec/Jan between semesters to get it out of the way, but I am not the best storyteller.

I'm going to probably resort to some level of cheesiness before it's all through!

I think almost everybody does. It is extremely difficult to make yourself sound awesome without sounding arrogant. 😀

They gave us a copy of our PS at our MSTP graduation and I was so embarrassed. 😳

so i've taken the last classes of my college career...

should I feel guilty for thinking that if I had my way, I would continuously loop these past 4 years for the rest of eternity? If there has to be a future, then med school is all I really want....but I can't help but feel sad that nothing is ever going to compare to college life 🙁

I have some ideas but for the PS I'm actually completely clueless as to what/how to write it.

Congrats on finishing college! I felt that way too when I finished college. At least for me, med school and grad school both had some extremely difficult parts and some extremely rewarding parts. And really I feel like a lot of things get so much easier with age and experience.

I don't stress out as much as I used to, I think because I just have so much more under my belt now. Like right now I'm nervous about this transition into residency, which I think is reasonable and everybody is, but I'm not totally paralyzed by it like I would have been when I was younger. My philosophical thoughts. 😉

I started out with the idea that I knew medicine was for me and how my mother being a non-trad going to med school when I was 11-14 gave me a great role model and how my parents, one being an FP, and one being a CRNA gave me a LOT of great exposure to medicine from an early age. I then transitioned into how my dreams were shattered after having cancer and treatments my first few years of college, and how I went into Speech-Language Path since my grades weren't good enough for med school and my pre-med counselor pretty much shot me down. I go on to talk about pursing my masters, then Ph.D. and realizing through performance in medically-related classes, research, owning my own business, and the encouragement of others my dream is still very much attainable, and then how I got from the Ph.D. program to here.

I feel really bad that I sound so full of myself, but no one else is going to advocate for me, so I better do it right!

exactly. but then some say a PS isn't always about what has happened to you rather than explaining something in your life that made a difference. Like as non-trads do all give life stories about why medicine in the explaination of why my grades are horrible and the adversity overcomed to make it thus far? Seems like a boring story. I'm a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE writer so I'm apprehensive about this part of the application.

It seems some have such creative talents *ahem, VD* to take their life lessons and put them into prose.

Make sure you get somebody knowledgeable to proof-read it... Q really helped focus mine properly... I never really got spirit & flow back into it, but I think the post-Q-version answered the question asked, which can only be a good thing.

edit: mshheaddoc, if it helps I can show you my pre-Q and post-Q versions. Like I said, the second version doesn't have that well-written feel to it, but the first one and the feedback I got to it might give you an idea of how non-trad stories should or shouldn't be used. Now I'm really curious to read VD's, I bet she's a kick-*ss writer.

Wow, that sounds like a great outline for a PS. I don't think you sound full of yourself at all. You have to sell yourself in a PS!

What kind of cancer did you have, if you don't mind me asking? (You totally don't have to answer that if you don't want).

OK, I'm going to go eat. I'm finally hungry!

The hubby and I went to breakfast (well actually brunch), then saw Cars this morning. Cars was SOOOOO much better than Nacho Libre, even my husband thought it was great.

We got some Cold Stone Creamery ice cream, and geeeeez! They give you so much! We couldn't finish ours!

We also saw an original 1970 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440 that was white (like the one in Vanishing Point) with a pistol shift. That may not mean much to most of you, but those cars are very rare (thanks in part to the Dukes of Hazzard), and that made my husband's day!

Naw, it's cool. I had thyroid cancer - follicular. My father also had it when he was in his early 30's but medullary type that spread. Only by the grace of God did he survive. They gave him 6 months.

I was pretty petrified though when I was told it was cancer. It was fast-growing (a golf-ball sized tumor that appeared pretty much overnight) and my dad's history made things pretty tense.

Another bummer was that most girls get the freshman 15 during their 1st year of college - I got the freshman 40-50 thanks to the inactivity of my thyroid and my tumor.

Edit: I forgot to mention I was a freshman when I got it.

I cannot wait to see Cars!!

I have no problem eating an entire Cold Stone.

I'm struggling with the PS b/c I'm somewhere in-between a trad and a non-trad...I'm not applying straight from undergrad, but I've only had 1 year of real world non-college experience. So it's hard to know if I should focus on what I did in college or what I've been doing since.

Thanks! Yea I think for me, I am really excited to transition into learning what I really want to learn. I was not thrilled with my major here, but the one thing I will miss is the school spirit and traditions. At Penn State, there really isn't much to do other than be intensely into school pride and all that, and I don't think that really happens in med school......or does it?
