Well, it's official. The headaches I've been getting that don't get better with normal headache medicine are migraines. I went to the doctor and got some migraine stuff this afternoon for a killer headache that was making me feel sick to my stomach and cry because I felt so crappy. It worked!! I'm headache free for the first time in days!

This feels so good. 😀

No, I'm actually staying with my research prof for the rest of this month. I'll move into my own place the last weekend of July. 🙂

Wow! I really like my research prof but can't imagine spending a month at his house. 😱

What are you taking?

I rarely get headaches but when I do they knock me on my butt for pretty much a whole day.

nothing huge, just a bbq. damn it nik, i just saw on the activity sheet that we have to turn in at the end of the week that there is a section for "night call" that has to be signed by a resident. i'll probably have to make up tomorrows call some other night this week.

*muah* at least you get to chill tomorrow night

🙁 A friend of mine had her daughter at 29 weeks - very sad, she was initially pregnant with triplets, then lost the fraternal one early one, then at 29 weeks one of the identicals died in utero so they have to deliver the other one early. Obviously she had a long NICU stay. She was there every day, doing kangaroo care, and only left at night. She said the nurses just raved and raved about how wonderful it was that she was there so much. Sadly, what she did just isn't the norm.

I've only been in the NICU a few times myself with the lactation consultant at the hospital - I didn't think much of it at the time, but there really weren't many parents there at all. 🙁

how awful that your friend lost two of the babies. how's the little girl doing now?

my best friend had a 28-weeker back in January, and it was pretty scary. I was glad I'd been on the NICUs at work, b/c that is a TOTALLY different hospital environment than I'd ever seen before.

parents visiting is a tough call. of course, most of them (not all, unfortunately) want to be there for the babies as much as possible, but sometimes real life may get in the way of that. we had a really judgmental nurse at work who was accusing a mother of poor parenting b/c she only came in for 45 minutes 2x/week. I was shadowing our NICU SW, who told me that mom is a single parent who has 5 other children at home, limited transportation and lives 45 minutes from the hospital. she was doing the best she could given her circumstances.

even for families with resources, though- life still goes on.... the household still has to run, parents may have to return to work.. plus the NICU isn't a very comfortable place to pass time. I've seen a lot of parents try to keep a "normal" schedule in what is now an abnormal situation by doing morning routine, go to the hospital for a few hours, afternoon/dinner routine, go to the hospital for a few hours, home for bed.

Oh my gosh that sucks. 😡

Do you have to do this one the whole night or just until 10 or 11? (That still sucks, but at least sucks less).

I didn't feel well earlier and spent basically the entire day in bed. Now I am up and feeling better. I was going to do a bunch of errands today that I need to do tomorrow!

Something called Zomig (I think).

I get headaches a lot, with lots of different triggers that I've been able to figure out (caffeine withdrawal, perfumes, etc) but every now and then like this last one, *nothing* helps the pain. Those are the migraines apparently.

My research prof has the most gorgeous house ever - out in the country on prairie land with a whole bunch of horses.

But if I were staying there he would make me work all the time. 🙄

Seriously, when I was in grad school, he would send me an email about doing something at 6 AM on Sat. Write back at 6:05 asking if I had done it yet.

My prof is seriously THE greatest. She also left me the keys to her car and permission to drive it while she's gone. 😎

We keep dispensing Innopran for Migraines at the Clinic - It could be Zomig too.

Wow, good call! 👍 She originally prescribed me something that started with a P, but the pharmacy didn't have it so they called and she said to do Zomig.

How are you doing with your migraines?
I'm glad you're feeling better, oxeye. Migraines are the pits. I get them occasionally too, although not often enough that I take special medication for them like that. Do you get an aura? I do. It looks like shimmering, like if you're watching the heat rise from the hood of your car on a summer day in FL, or as if you're trying to look at the world from under water. When that happens, I know I have about thirty minutes before my vision clears and I get one massive h*** of a headache. I have to drop whatever I'm doing and take the maximum dose of painkiller plus drink a can of soda. Seriously, caffeine is an amazingly good analgesic. I get sinus and cluster headaches too, and caffeine is better than any other over the counter medication.

do you have the day off tomorrow miss intern?

I do!!

Wednesday I start getting my butt kicked in earnest. Though a few days last week I felt like crying I was so overwhelmed. It has been really nice to have a few days off to regroup.

I'm telling you. I just have a way with the ladies. 😀 No but seriously, she's just a super nice person. She constantly has various students and colleagues staying with her. Her house is seriously a freaking menagerie: dogs, parrots, tons of squawking and barking. Luckily, I like dogs and I don't care about the parrots because they're quiet at night. 😛

aww beary, i'm glad you were able to recharge. getting use to new responsibilities and new surroundings is stressful as hell, you're gonna be great once you find your groove. 🙂

Hmmm - Propranolol? That's the generic name for Innopran which was my first guess. It's an antihypertensive (beta blocker I think, but I could be wrong). It works for migraines as well but why is beyond me. I know sometimes I they have something to do with bloodflow to the brain.

Or maybe it was Percocet

I get fun little black dots. Seriously looks like there's crap on my contacts.

I've never had an aura which is why it's taken me so long to ask a doctor for migraine meds. My sister gets migraines too and she gets a weird aura thing too (though it sounds different from yours).

Caffeine usually works wonders for my headaches. It just didn't cut it today -neither did the aleve, advil, or percocet. I was crying this afternoon to my hubby because I felt so crappy and frustrated that nothing would take the pain away. So he took me to an urgent care place (since my doctor's office was closed today). It was kind of funny - I told my husband that they would definitely ask why I have percocet, and they did! 😉

Both of these would work.

Hey oxeye, where's that percocet? :meanie:

With you and Nikki as my suppliers.... 😛

Beary: Shhhh - you'll give away my evil plan for sneaking drugs.

But seriously, they get donations in and they got a ton of doryx (which they'll never use - 75 mg dose) so I bought them a bunch of 100 mg tabs of Doxycycline and traded them. That way they have them to treat Gonorrhea or something.

LOL, not percocet - I already tried that one today. 😉

And it wasn't propranolol either. I only know that because it wasn't the generic name. I looked it up in my breastfeeding book to make sure it was safe. I think the generic started with an E ... maybe. 😕

Percocet didn't work??!! Yikes. You better keep it. 😉

I almost never ever go to the doctor but I actually made an appointment with an opthalmologist because I was seeing these yellow waves all the time. He said they were "optical migraines." The same mechanism as other migraines, but just limited to the visual cortex.

I have only had a few full blown migraines, and they were during the placebo phase when I was on OCPs. (Sorry if that's TMI. ) I stopped taking OCPs and haven't had hardly any since.
