So molly you guys don't want to have kids then?

🙂 My BF has 4 kids already with his ex-wife and doesn't want more; I don't have any from my marriage (thankfully!). I've always been pretty ambivalent on the idea of kids so if we wind up staying together that won't bother me.

In other news, it really SUCKS that I'm sick this week! Nothing like celebrating graduation by staying home, eating takeout and watching Firefly. 😎

I did pop a bottle of champagne, though. 🙂 So now I'm sick, tired, and tipsy.

You are going to smash your Step 1 out of the park, A-man, I can feel it. 👍 :luck:

Are you done? I must admit that I may choose that after I have two because I don't really want more than two.

He is very, very, very, very done. I wouldn't mind having another, but it makes more sense to stop with two with my med school plans.

wow, i wish. at my school we are required to have completed step 1 before attending orientation for the 3rd year of medical school. basically, without this step you arent promoted. even now i've only been "provisionally" promoted to 3rd year. 🙄

i actually thought all US schools had this policy, i guess baylor doesnt. in a way i think its to help us because how is she going to be able to study for step 1 in the middle of taking rotations when she has shelf exams and stuff to study for?!?! thats gonna be hard i think. is she md phd? those guys are lucky at my school because again you dont have to take step 1 until 3rd year orientation, for some of them that will be years away so they can pretty much take step 1 whenever they want between now and 2009 or whatever. lucky ****.
I don't believe she's MD/PhD - I would be really surprised to find out she is. I dunno what's up with that. I actually found out because I saw you talking about it one day, I hadn't talked to her in awhile and sent her a "Good Luck" note thru email. Then she told me she wasn't taking it til Feb.

ME TOO! 😍 Serenity is the movie we pop in just to study to or what not. I NEVER get sick of that movie or just popping in the epidsodes. I got them for my hubby at christmas 😀

Molly - that is cool, I was just curious. I wasn't aware there were already kids in the picture 😉

A - you will do fine. Why 3 days? Do you think it will really help all that much?

You guys are hilarious on this thread!!!!

I'm off to clean for the day then a graduation party tonight for a certain DO graduate. 👍

Congrats to all of you done finals as well as graduation!!!!!! 😀

For you Nikki...

------------- Missing Manure Makes a Stink -----------------

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio - Police in Middlefield, Ohio, have been
asked to watch for whoever is scooping up horse manure at
hitching posts for Amish buggies at the local Wal-Mart.
Police in the village, east of Cleveland, were asked to
investigate the "suspicious incident" by Lisza Wright, who
gets paid $25,000 a year by the village to tidy up the 36
hitching areas every day. While taking the manure isn't a
crime, she said in her complaint the culprits leave a huge
mess behind, which gets trampled down and is much harder
to clean, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Wright said
the unauthorized pooper-scooping actually doubles her work-
load at the high-traffic hitches outside Wal-Mart and a
shopping plaza. Police Chief Joe Stehlik promised that
officers would keep an eye out, the newspaper said.

Good luck A-man - you can do it!!

I just talked to my friend who is a MSII at Baylor and she says she's not taking the Step until Feb of next year. Is that wierd or is it usually just up to the person?
Baylor is on a different schedule. They finish classes in 1.5 years instead of two. So they don't have to take Step 1 before they start their clinicals in Jan. of M2.

Maybe that has something to do with it. A-man starts clinicals this summer, so I'm sure that's why he has to do it in the summer. I would guess it is before you start clinicals that you have to take it.

But then I'm confused because she's already done some of her clinicals but has not taken Step 1. I think Q was saying that some schools you don't have to because they start clinicals earlier.

I was also going to tell my random peeps that I did some research about FP salaries and loan repayment. I don't know if any of you are interested but here's the post:

I was really curious about the numbers being thrown around in here so I decided to do some research. Salary.com has the median family practice salary at $149,374.
The tax on that (with standard and not itemized deductions and filing as head of household) would be $33,784. Now I live in Texas and we have no state income tax so you guys that live in a state with income tax would need to figure that out for yourself.
After taxes that's 115,590. After SS withholdings, 7256 by my estimate, that's 108,334

So an average monthly salary of $9027.

I found this loan estimator: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/loanpayments.phtml

And plugged in my expected debt (100,000) with a 10 year payback rate and found that I would be making payments of $1,150.80 a month.

So 9027 - 1151 = 7876 take home a month (not taking into consideration that I think student loan interest is tax deductable.)

The website about loans had this to add:
It is estimated that you will need an annual salary of at least $138,096.00 to be able to afford to repay this loan. This estimate assumes that 10% of your gross monthly income will be devoted to repaying your student loans. If you use 15% of your gross monthly income to repay the loan, you will need an annual salary of only $92,064.00 , but you may experience some financial difficulty.

Yes, my numbers are really rough and based off of info I found through Google. Take it for what you will. I did this research for myself but then I figured maybe someone else was interested. Hope this helped someone!

Not all schools require you to take Step 1 for promotion to M3. I can't remember whether Baylor requires it or not. Someone who has an MSAR, look it up. Then we'll know.

Ouch. I'm really hoping to be able to do this with 40-60k in debt. My biggest expense is going to be childcare (thank goodness for in-state tuition!!!). How much I'll have to take out in loans is going to depend on how many puppies my dog has in her litters! LOL I'm going to breed her once a year. I'm keeping everything crossed that she has 10 puppies her first litter and nothing goes wrong. Whatever we can't pay with the puppy money, we'll pay with loans.

At least we don't have to repay loans during residency - right??

I want you random people to know that I just took an absolutely gorgeous proton NMR. It's like pretty enough to publish. And more importantly, it's the right compound. 😀

Heh. We can't do stuff like that. It isn't DIGNIFIED for Ph.D.s to carry on. 🙄 :meanie: At my graduation, the other students are all throwing up their mortarboards, and the Ph.D.s were just sitting there. 😛 Well, it isn't the same to throw up a tam, I guess. :meanie:

Good. 🙂 How's the studying going?

I'm at the lab rotovapping my compound. It's the second to last step. I've tried to get the last step to work THREE times now, and it just keeps decomposing my compound. 😡 This is my last try....I'm going to use slightly milder conditions and hope it makes it.

Q, you are hardcore. Saturday night at the lab...after you already have your PhD.

Studying is going pretty close to on schedule. Taking it in small steps.

Dude, I could say the same thing to you about studying for the MCAT on a Saturday night. 😉

The thing for me is that my prof wants me to write a paper. And he'd like me to include this reaction if and when I get it to work. And I on the other hand would like to skip out of town altogether and go on vacation for a while before I start medical school....so, here I am at the lab on Sat. night. 😛 Let's just hope I have more luck with this reaction as a post doc than I did as a grad student. :meanie: Tomorrow is the big day.

Hey now! I already went out to dinner tonight at PF Changs (YUM!!!). I'm just relaxing now watching SNL, surfing SDN, and reading MCAT books.
