So this week I had what appeared to be a minor accident (my fault- damn ADD 😳 ), which turned out to be very costly and probably means I totalled my car.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to buy or avoid? I reallyreallyreallyreallyreally have been wanting a Jeep Liberty, but with as much as I drive and the crappy gas mileage they get, I don't know if it's going to be an option. I've been researching Jettas and Civics online....

LifetimeDoc, I like your avatar.

This is how I felt today at the stupid fake patient test I had to do as part of orientation:

How come pathologists are supposed to know about everything else, but nobody else has to know anything about pathology? 😡
awww, at least you're a real doctor now beary and not just a med student slave anymore.

sounds like you are gonna destroy mcat physical sciences brett! were you a physics major? i thought i'd never say this to anyone but i hope you get a physics heavy mcat. 😉

oh, and count me in for your vamp game this monday.

I had a Liberty and I *loved* it. Gas mileage was not great, though. 🙁 I traded my Liberty in last year because we needed more space in the car for two kids and three dogs. I still miss it.

Sorry to hear about your car. I have had a Toyota avalon for 10 years/100k and have been very happy with it.

The current car is a 2000 and has 131,000 miles on it, which is going to drop the resale value sooo low and why it's going to be so easy to total it out.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

wow, at least you're ok! it must have been pretty bad!

ummmm... no. 😳 I wish it were- it would be a much better story than "well I was taking the lid off my drink and....."

We were stopped in a left turn lane. The arrow came on, he started and then stopped. I started and didn't see him stop b/c of said "lid incident". His trailer hitch went through the front bumper, but I couldn't have been going faster than 5mph.

My best friend said I'm not allowed to get another car if I'm going to stupid stuff like this. 😡

See my blog for a pic of my car.... Dodge Caliber. I've been averaging 26 mpg with my driving. Good car.

My husband says to stay away from GMC. He's a mechanic and has seen an exponential amount of GMC problems over Ford or Dodge. He also said Toyota and Mazda are making some really good cars nowadays, but you'll pay more.

If you are looking at a specific car, you can e-mail me and I'll have my hubby give you his opinion on it if you want. He went with me to buy/test-drive mine and he really liked it. He was researching it even before we bought it - looking at engine/transmission specs and such and estimating what could go wrong and cost to repair. Since it's a 2007 and a new model all together, it's hard to speculate, but he can guess from the type of engine/tranny.

Let me know if you want an inside opinion 😉

you know whats funny, calculus 1 and 2 were my best math classes in college. i aced both of them.... its been almost 4 years though so at this point i probably couldnt integrate to save my life.

good luck meg!

I'm trying to wrap my brain around the eta - delta precise definition for limits. I'm working them out and starting to get it, but it's a little hard for me so I need breaks.

I had planned to get a lot more done today but Calc has taken up most of the day.

We were behind 3 sections so we went at the speed of light on Thursday, now I have those homeworks and a quiz to study for 😱

thanks meg!!! and good luck with the calc. blech. don't think you could pay me to retake that.

the only reason i did well with calc was because i had the BEST calc teacher in the department. she only taught one section that started at 615AM and I signed up for that crazy early class just to get her. if you ever get lost meg, see your teacher during office hours. those office hour visits are what saved me with calculus.

Yeah, I think I have a pretty good teacher. She's really nice about going over what we don't understand.

Megboo, this should give you a boost.

I got an A+ in calc I, A's in Calc II and III.

I couldn't get the precise definition if my life depended on it. Only test I botched a whole problem.

Yep I'm a physics major. I'd combust with joy if I had a physics heavy form.

Hey guys,

Anyone know what I have to do to be able to see avatars, smilies, and other pics? The good news is that I finally got my parents' new DSL to work. (yay! No more dial-up!) The bad news is that now some setting isn't letting me see any pics, and I can't figure out where it is. But it's freaking driving me nuts. Any suggestions?

I think on every big test like MCATs or boards you remember better the ones you didn't know and agonized about. If you just know the answer, you just click it and move on. But those ones you agonize and agonize about really stick in your head, so it seems like you didn't know more than there actually was. This is how I am anyway.
Me too, definitely. If you know the answer to a question, it's obviously because it's an "easy" one, right? 😉

we have a drive in--it's like $12 a carload for 2 movies--they always have the newest movies.

I somehow got a B in calc--don't ask me how. it was a miracle!! biostats was the easiest math class ever though--the prof in my section gave us open book tests--the prof in the other section failed everyone

👍
That makes me feel better!

I kinda figured out the proof for simple limits, but it seems really redundant to me. Our instructor also said not to stress too much - she didn't understand it truly until calc 3 herself!

I'm just happy I'm catching on at the moment. Now I'm watching Big Momma's House 2 - BAD movie, but enough to de-stress!

Tomorrow it's NACHO LIBRE!

I loved calc. I think that was my favorite class ever. I minored in both math and physics and liked both of them way better than biochemistry which was my major.

When I started my Ph.D., I tried to learn hard core channel biophysics (my Ph.D. is technically in biophysics actually). But it didn't work, so I ended up doing a virus gene therapy project that my PI sort of had on the shelf, which at least worked and I learned how to do experiments. Then I discovered cilia. 😍

I think LJ is claiming her gunner game (with significant input from myfavred and myself).

Mine will most likely be pimps and hos. It will start either monday or tuesday. Sign-up will be posted tomm so drop by the lounge in the afternoon.

Ok...something I actually know somehting about! Jeep Libertys have a high incidence of windshield breakage due to the fact that the windshield is positioned at such a steep angle.

I have owned a ton of Hondas...including a Civic and CR-V (which is built on a Civic chasis) and I love Hondas. I would definitely recommend a Civic. If you are wanting a mini-SUV kinda thing...how 'bout a CR-V? True, they perhaps don't look as cool as the Jeeps...but I guarantee it will last longer and give you minimal problems...and protect your A$$ if your hubby decides to get it in a wreck that ends the days of the car....it will protect you.

P.S. They get great gas mileage too...which doesn't seem to change as the car ages.

That's right - pimps and hos....

"Get to work before I he-b*tch slap your @ss!"

"Get out there and work that man-gina, he-b!tch!"

I'd be a good pimp 😉

My husband is a big Dodge-Chrysler guy, but I'm not a big fan of Jeep. They are really noisy to ride in for one thing, from the Grand Cherokees to the Wranglers. Haven't experienced the Commander yet, though.

The Ford Escape has good reviews, too.

When are you looking to buy, jlw?

there have been a lot of reports lately of Cherokees suddenly accelerating when people shift them from neutral to drive. It's been happening a lot as people come out of car washes--one person has been killed when they were ran over by a jeep that did this. How scary is that?

Even though I'm not a fan of Jeep, I'd have to look hard at wet shoes and slippery acceleration pedals from the car wash, but I believe the Cherokees can be retrofitted with something to help this. Edit: I still wouldn't buy one!

There was a similar complaint about Audi in the 80's.

i heard dodge has terrible engine life

My husband's 95 Neon with not very many miles (just over 100K) was going to need the engine replaced. So we got rid of the car.

Annoying because we can't justify an extra car payment right now so we only have one car. Not a big deal since my husband works from home, but two cars can be nice to have still. I'm going on a trip out of town in a few days and we're going to have to rent a car for my husband to use while I am gone with the car.

😱 I heard the Neon's were crap anyway. Kinda like the Ford festiva or the Geo prizm.

I had a Prizm and the alternator went out 3x's!

I never minded the noise in my Jeep Liberty. I really never noticed that it was noisy.

The thing with Jeep is that they are made to go off road - especially the Wrangler. So I don't think comfort and a quiet ride are high on the priority list of people who buy them for their original purpose.

That said - I can't see anyone taking a Grand Cherokee off-road. Or even a Commander. I think I would have loved a Commander. We traded in the Liberty for a Pacifica and then Jeep came out with the Commader shortly afterwards. I love my Pacifica but I think I would have *really* loved the Commander.
