i love the clarks. and the superbowl shuffle. i'm not scared to admit i'm a sucker for country and bluegrass. i want to learn how to play the mandolin and headbang uncontrollably.

HA HA HA I have the Superbowl Shuffle on CD!!!!!!!!

I have recently come to love bluegrass, too! Something about banjos, fiddles, and mandolins that really calms me down!

I think the Pulp Fiction soundtrack was the #1 90's album, at least that's the only thing the other kids in my dorm would play (over and over and over and over.....)

i'm not sure about the soundtrack, but I think pulp fiction is one of the all time most overrated movies. Ok in the fact that it was very off the wall, but I could never stand the plot

Arsenic, beary, and mushy--i wrote you a poem:

Don't feel sad
Don't feel blue
'Cause you know
I 😍 you

Aww, that is the best poem ever! 😍

We had various orientation talks. I am really happy right now because I have 1.5 hrs off for lunch and my stuff this afternoon is at a different campus so I have come home for a power nap.

I was thinking of you folks because one of our talks this morning was about how to use caffeine, food, and napping to minimize fatigue. 🙂 Apparently a "power nap" must be less than 45 minutes to be effective.

I listen to the Kill Bill soundtrack over and over.

Matrix soundtrack is a good one too.

Yeah my one cat likes to lay on my arms when I'm typing at my desk 😕 She's such the weird one. Only snuggles when she wants.

Ok I'm beginning to think this summer is a waste. I'm supposed to be working full time on research. I'm using a program for image analysis that I have NO idea how to use (Metamorph) and I've tried to contact technical support but no one ever gets back to me via email. A few months ago I tried to cnotact by phone and that didn't help. No one knows how to "clean" the micoscope we have as it is dirty and screwing with the data as well as this "project" i'm on is so stupid. I signed on to learn lab techniques and I don't do much of anything. Since I"m lost on this stupid program (no owners manual and the web blows for help) I don't have much else to do. I could be working on areview paper but then again, there is another subject over my head. Its just so frustrating!!!! /rant

I better still get an A even though I'm not working all the time. Alot of my time is spent outside of lab but oh well. Its not my fault.

hey guys! Yesterday really sucked, it just felt so overwhelming and we were all totally confused about where we had to be and what we had to do. Today I feel much better about it. I'm on the Pediatrics Emergency part of the peds rotation this week and so far today its been great. I only had ER duties from 9AM-2PM today but it was my turn to take call so I'm gonna be in the Peds ER from 6PM-11PM. Thats right, I GET TO GO HOME AT 11. How cool is that? My school changed the system where students would have to spend entire nights on call. Now, if its just one student on call that student HAS to be sent home by 11PM which is my situation tonight. 😀 They use to make us sleep over no matter what. They still make you sleep over in certain situations and on certain rotations, but I heard from the senior class that just graduated last month that the call system is much better now than it use to be here.

Overall, I'm still scared as hell but its a more comfortable scared. Learning in 3rd year is sooooo much more my style, basically you look up stuff you dont know on your free time. Or you look up info on your patients problems during your free time. Much better than having everything about everything shoved down your throat in the first 2 years. Its not bad but you have to get use to being pimped. I kid you not - when I was alone with my attending today she asked me to "draw my best ear drum as seen through the otoscope". wtf? i drew something that wasnt half bad, I told my 2 classmates on my team about it and they said they would have had no idea how to draw it. 😀 I told them to glance at netters tonight since one of the residents told me this attending asks every med student that question. See how nice I am, I share! Now they are gonna look smart tomorrow when they have to draw it. People need to help eachother out - I dont see how anyone can survive 3rd year without that. The 2 people on my team are becoming like my best friends since they are in the exact same situation I'm in and dealing with the same attendings/residents/schedule. Added bonus is that some of the attendings/residents introduce me as doctor to the parents! 😱 :scared:

We'll see though... today may just be a good day. 😉

Research can be extremely frustrating.

I did a lot of image analysis and never liked Metamorph, though I think that's like a $10k program. 😱 I always preferred image J, which is a free download from the NIH. It has good help files and lots of plug-ins you can install. Something you may want to check out if you haven't already. Like any image program, it's a little hard to get used to but it will do just about anything.

Don't tell anybody but I never once saw an eardrum through all of my med school.

I've tried to look in my kids' ears when I thought they were infected and all I ever saw was darkness (even with the silly light). I even tried on my husband and he made me stop because he said I was hurting him. Great ....

I'm a little worried that I will never see an eardrum all through med school too.

Thanks beary. I think we're going to go with that. I got some information today. Its just frustating that I don't know much about image analysis either or how to do it, etc. I'm being thrown to the wolves :scared: 😉

A - yeah that is how it usually is on 3rd year and you will learn alot. If you have classmates that work together then you are set. I know hern and others contact people who have already had certain rotations for heads up and there are notes and "pimp" notes out there that keep them on their toes. You're lucky about the call 😉 I like his school b/c they don't do much call, but they did start THIS YEAR where there is mandatory house call but its only a few times. Nothing like the interns/residents. Can you imagine being q4 :scared:

In other news, today I am feeling better. I took my poly sci exam. Think I aced it. I have class tonight 👎 But it won't be too bad. I'm just so swamped with other stuff right now.

As for oxeye - i'm glad that some non-trad students make it happen (with the MCAT!) You're my inspiration now 😍 I'm inspired by Q but I think she's just a super genius or something 😛 At least I know you're human because you apparently (bombed) the first time you took MCAT. What, did you get a 30? 😛 😉

It's really hard. Adults are so much easier than kids because they will at least sit still. But my attending would always say something like, "you see how it's all red and bulging?" and I would go through the motions and say "yeah."

I've only taken the MCAT once. I'm flattered that I'm your inspiration, though. 😍

A-man, I am so glad that you are feeling better about things today and don't have to stay all night. I think some of the duty-hour reforms are starting to trickle down to med students - there was a huge difference between before grad school and after grad school for me.

I just have a feeling that's what I'm going to do also. Good thing peds is way, way, way down on my list of possible specialties. 😉

I dissected a shark ear. I dissected many a shark ear. I think that might be as close to the ear as I will ever get.

I had an ear infection a few years ago! It was so weird - they're pretty unusual in adults. It was a terrible sensation - I actually was fantasizing about just sticking a needle through my eardrum to let the pressure out. And I was TOTALLY deaf on that side. Thank goodness for antibiotics!

Ouch! My older daughter had an ear infection not too long ago. I felt so badly for her. She would just hold the side of her head and cry "owie, owie, owie". I got some numbing drops from her pediatrician and that helped until the antibiotics kicked in.

Yeah, you don't hear about adults getting them very often. Sounds miserable!

There are tornadic supercells one county over heading straight for us.

I really used to love severe weather until the IC tornado. Now it makes me jumpy. I saw in the paper that they're still not done with the cleanup from that (not even talking about rebuilding).
