Your dad is an OB?

CRNA - he does epis and such.

Mom used to do the delivering. The OB unit actually shut down 2 years ago due to cost-benefit issues.

It was such a nice team. Dad with the gas and mom pulling out the tots. I used to shadow them a lot when they were on call together. Heck, if I was visiting and they were called out they could be gone all night. It was a great way to have family time. They would dress me in scrubs and let me be the "Student nurse".

My folks are really good about letting me watch procedures live, especially my dad.

It totally rules. Even better - the general surgeon for the hospital is my parents' neighbor so I've seen lots of cholecystectomies, appendectomies, etc. I think my dad just wants me to go into gas because he always runs through the machine and drug set-up and patient prep with me everytime I shadow him.

Plus the girls that work in the OR are my age or a little bit older and my dad is 60. He's such a dad-type to everyone. I can only hope to have that kind of respect when I'm working in a group someday.

(can you tell I'm a daddy's girl? )

I want your connections Meg! 😀

The experiences are great, but how to write about them for med school apps will be tricky.

I don't want to sound like my mommy and daddy and their friends are just vouching for me just to make me sound good when in fact I've seen a LOT and totally love being in the OR.

Actually, I like being in sterile environments. This summer working with the rugrats I've had 2 serious colds and a sinus infection. I'm really thinking twice about going into peds....

Didn't they make that into a Lifetime movie?

That boy is probably too scared to ever have sex again. 😉

They don't have to know that the surgeon is a neighbor. 😉

I could never go into peds. Kids are petri dishes!!

I think the best stories, though come from psych. There is a state psych facility in my hometown (Chester) where Illinois sends the criminally insane (mostly from Chicago). My mom is the FP that serves the mental health and does physicals and stuff. I've been begging her to let me shadow her there but she keeps holding off. I know she's got some good stories.

And I know jlw probably has some good ones too as a SW.

I think I remember that show. Scary.

It makes me sad to hear about the young girls delivering.

Is it just me or are girls physically maturing faster these days?

no, they are. something to do with nutrition. girls hit puberty once their body hits a certain weight, something like 103 or something like that for most girls. given the rise in obesity and unhealthy eating habits girls are hitting it faster than previous generations.

I've almost completely stopped going to playgroups because I was sick of my kids constantly picking up bugs there.

I'm scared for when they start daycare/preschool.

Make sure they get their flu shot. The more kids are around germs the less sick they get (or so the immune theory goes) but for some reason it all gets dumped on me by the end of the week.

I feel great at the beginning of the week, then after all the sneezing, coughing, and runny noses, I feel dead at the end of the week.

I will say this- in 2.5 years of in-home visits as a psychiatric hotline mobile outreach counselor, I never once encountered a cockroach-infested house (or at least not that I saw them).

Cat poop, cross-dressers, poisoned apples, and the "other" kind of roaches, yes. But never cockroaches.

There but for the grace of God go I.

Oh that's just wonderful. 🙁

I'm thinking it was a statuatory rape case with his now wife. Their oldest is almost 3 and she can't even be 19 yet. I'll bet her dad didn't like this guy knocking up his daughter and set the law on him.

They have 2 kids and he seems to be a pretty good dad.

Oh they'll definitely get flu shots when they are in day care.
