Heh. Have a Fosters for me.

My late night $0.02 before I retire:

Beary - Hope things improve as a HO
Molly, Fe - Randomite theme park trip certainly sounds enticing
Oxeye - Good luck with the diet (is this why your husband denies you ice cream?)
Will - Good luck with DK II
Jlw - That's one pimped out ride!
Arsenic, Megboo - Congrats on the computer finds
Lytes, BB, Guju, Nikki - Good luck during the final countdown!

Yes, yes it is ....

Actually he insists that I don't need to lose weight but I know he's only saying that because he knows what's good for him. :meanie:

Diet went well today. Though is it bad that I rewarded my good dieting today with a nice bowl of raisin bran as a late night snack? I really need to stop rewarding myself with food.

And now I'm going to bed. 🙂 My friend is coming over tomorrow morning. We're going to have donuts for breakfast (what diet?) and then take our kids swimming.

I'm just happy she's feeling good enough to go out! Her son is 3 weeks old and she had a c-section. I'm not sure I'd be up to going swimming (or wading in her case) so quickly! It was her idea, though. 🙂

Good night fellow post ******!

We went to see that band last night that I linked a few days ago. They were rocking out, it was fun. They were playing at the only bar at my ugrad that's still there from the time I attended. Or at least the only one that's under the same management...

We were having a great time, it starts filling up with 21y/os..... and somewhere in the midst of Living on a Prayer I started to feel old when I realized that I was in 7th grade when Bon Jovi put out Slippery When Wet. Which would have made everyone around me.... about 2. Maybe 3. *sigh*

Fe: On that ranking you posted, my ugrad is #5. :wow:

I mean I love my school but #5!! Whoa!! 😱

Yea mine is 3......maybe that's why I like it so much

I don't think any ranking system is perfect, and I don't think there is a true way to rank schools. But I really can't stand the US News Rankings; I think they are complete garbage.

I really like this perspective in the article by Wash Month about these rankings:

"And so, to put The Washington Monthly College Rankings together, we started with a different assumption about what constitutes the "best" schools. We asked ourselves: What are reasonable indicators of how much a school is benefiting the country? We came up with three: how well it performs as an engine of social mobility (ideally helping the poor to get rich rather than the very rich to get very, very rich), how well it does in fostering scientific and humanistic research, and how well it promotes an ethic of service to country. We then devised a way to measure and quantify these criteria (See "A Note on Methodology"). Finally, we placed the schools into rankings. Rankings, we admit, are never perfect, but they're also indispensable.

By devising a set of criteria different from those of other college guides, we arrived at sharply different results. Top schools sank, and medium schools rose. For instance, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, 48th on the U.S News list, takes third place on our list, while Princeton, first on the U.S. News list, takes 43rd on ours. In short, Pennsylvania State, measured on our terms--by the yardstick of fostering research, national service and social mobility--does a lot more for the country than Princeton.

Don't get us wrong. We're not saying Princeton isn't a superb school. It employs many of the nation's finest minds, and its philosophy department is widely considered the best in the country. Its eating clubs, or whatever they're called, are surely unmatched. Princeton may be a great destination for your tuition dollars, all 31,450 of them, not including room or board. But what if it's a lousy destination for your tax dollars? Each year, Princeton receives millions of dollars in federal research grants. Does it deserve them? What has Princeton done for us lately? This is the only guide that tries to tell you. That, and a bit more"

I bet A&M is ranked highly because at one point we were the biggest trainer of military officers outside like Air Force Academy/Anapolis/West Point

That would match up with the service to country portion.

I agree - I think that's a better way of looking at schools.

I just checked - and they ranked my undergrad #2!! 😀

US News is completely messed up, IMO, because they take into account what alumni give back to the school. For some reason, Berkeley grads almost always loved the school but don't want to give them money. LOL (me included - but that's just because I'm poor right now!) I'm assuming this other ranking doesn't consider this.

Me too, I mean, at least it's a change of pace. I always wondered why Penn State was so low in the rankings in USNWR, considering it generates more revenue for the state of Pa than any other entity (about 8 Billion) and any other school. It also has the lasrgest student-run Philanthropy in the world (over 30 million total).

These are the things that seem important to me, and the things that schools like Princeton and Carnegie Mellon just don't do or can't do. But yet those are the schools that are always considered "the best."

*this is me done being obnoxiously loyal to Penn State" 😳

So I'm chillin at my friends house trying to fill out secondaries and researching UTMB a bit (got another interview tommorrow) but I'm seriously starting to get a wicked headache. I think I'm headed out to feed my caffeine addiction. What are the votes: Starbucks or Panera Bread? 😀

Isn't it nice to see someone challenging those other rankings for once!

Hmm do they have Dunkin Donuts down there in Tx? They have the best coffee and higher caffeine count than even Starbucks!
