Best+worst days of my life: post-adult tonsillectomy. Liquid percocet x 3 weeks is really cool. Thrush + post-tonsillectomy pain is not so cool.

Wound up being kind of a toss-up.

I did achieve some truly excellent scores on Bejeweled on my cellphone.

many years ago I had my wisdom teeth pulled and was given a Vicodin script WITH A REFILL.

I was newly into my current career, and made the high-and-mighty decision that getting the refill would make me "like one of them" re: the substance abusers I was meeting. the refill expired, unfilled.

in retrospect, I was really young and stupid and a total idiot. ALWAYS get the refill, people. ALWAYS.

Ok, here is the 86 Vette that my dad just got (he's like a little kid right now  ) It has 37,000 miles and is in near mint condition 🙂

When my roomie was in the hospital recovering from an overdose, I could have made a fortune off all his pastel pills.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you have to get a post-adult tonsillectomy? I thought that was rare?

Seconded. I actually think this is a big problem with health care people.

I was always hesitant to ask for pain meds lest I be labeled a seeker.

After 3 peritonsillar abscesses + surgery, I am not hesitant anymore. Fortunately the ENT who did my tonsillectomy was awesome and gave me no static whatsoever.

Wish I could say the same for the ENT residents who saw my first two abscesses.

I broke my foot 3 yrs ago and was given one of the 'Cets in the ER- either perco- or darvo-, I can't remember, b/c whatever it was it did NOT work for me. What I DO remember is that b/c I had gotten that whole 15 pills, the ortho decided I didn't need anything else when I saw him the next day.

3 days later, my basement flooded, and I'm going up/down the stairs trying to stop it all while wearing a walking cast. 🙁 my "B, P!" friend called and responded to me sobbing "I need you to come over!". Turns out she had Vicodin from a root canal (about 12 pills) which didn't work for her. but my 'cet works for her. so in true substance-abuser fashion, we traded.

2 weeks later, I tell the ortho that I need something for the pain b/c the 'cet wasn't working so I got rid of it (hey- it was true. I just didn't tell him HOW) and had been unsuccessfully relying on ibuprofen. he gave me a suspicious look, and I told him "Look, I know what you think, and I'm not a drug seeker (LIAR!). Give me this Vicodin script and I'll never bother you again."

I still have 10 left. :meanie:

It is fairly rare. I had recurrent peritonsillar abscesses, 2 on the right and 1 on the left, within the course of 18 months, plus >6 "pharyngitis" dx. For one of my abscesses, I had an incision and drainage which did not resolve the problem. (I have my own private opinion on the reason why.) The abscess spontaneously ruptured and drained at 1 am on the night before one of my ochem exams. It was absolute hell and I have no idea how I managed to maintain my GPA that semester. The ENTs at my school would not perform the tonsillectomy for reasons passing my understanding (and also clinical guidelines, but we won't get into that 🙂) so I went to a private practice ENT that I had worked with at my hospital. I had to pay a bundle out of pocket and it was hands down the nastiest experience I've ever endured but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

You should hear the way it sounds! Nothing like the sound of a Corvette 😍

I am so proud of him. This is the first big "toy" he has ever bought for himself, and he has worked hard for it (after putting 3 kids through college 🙂 )

I think i'm going to get him a sweet little Corvette key chain.

Check out the dashboard, it's totally back to the future!!

Yea, I have had ENT problems for much of my life, and I hald always heard adult tonsillectomys were very painful. I had major issues with my ears (like, 7 tubes in my one ear up until age 15). It made me loose 50% of my hearing in the one ear.

Yea it was a pain in the ass, but I got to know my ENT doctor pretty well. Poor guy worked so hard trying to figure out what was wrong. He tried a bunch of things (like taking out my adenoids) but nothing much worked, fluid just kept coming back.

My last one was done right at his practice since I was old enough. Talk about a weird feeling - a scalpel to the eardrum while awake.....loudest noise you will ever experience!! 😱

This is what he REALLY wanted. A 1967. The greatest American sportscar ever made, IMO.

Didn't quite have the $$ for this bad boy

*drools*

Somehow I think he'll manage to keep himself amused with his current baby. At least until you start hitting the big bucks as an attending. 😉

Yeah, I'm expecting him to put me in prison.

I'll send jlw after you if you go AWOL again. Then you'll be forced to clean the latrines for a month with your toothbrush. And no, the hours may not be counted as community service on AMCAS.

You have been warned.

You get the toothbrush if you're lucky, I might add. Otherwise it's the tongue for you!!!!!
