Eventually, as technology advanced, graphics and text came together and games began appearing that looked somewhat similar to modern MMORPGs. These games ran on the oldstyle networks (CompuServe, Prodigy, etc.) and were really expensive.

One the networks lost their stranglehold on the Internet, the game market was able to really explode.

While not the first MMORPG, Ultima Online was the first to become truly massively popular. Based on a preexisting series of games, it featured 3D graphics. It was followed in a few years by the first MMORPG to really become a household word -- EverQuest.

Ultima Online, EverQuest (EQ), and another game called Asheron's Call were the dominant players in what you might call first generation MMORPG's. This state of affairs lasted through the late 90s and early years of this century.

Some (mostly forgettable) new games were introduced in the early 00s, but none of them achieved the market share of the Big Three.

Beginning in 2003, a few next-generation games began to make advances.

EvE Online was the first really successful spaceship based MMORPG. City of Heroes, in 2004, brought superheroes to the table. Both became very popular, despite the fact that until this time the sword-and-sorcery model had been overwhelmingly dominant.

EverQuest, though having tried to keep up by releasing expansion packs, realized that they needed to overhaul their game to continue being a competitive force.

EQII was launched in 2004. Meanwhile, Blizzard, a giant in other gaming genres, decided to enter the marketplace with the highly anticipated World of Warcraft (WoW). Basically WoW ate EQ's lunch, beat him up, and sent him home to mommy. WoW is currently the most successful MMORPG in the US. According to Wikipedia (where I got some other help for this history lesson), 6 million people worldwide play WoW.

No. I don't dump money into games since they eat my time like flesh eating bacteria eats flesh.

Maybe once I'm accepted I'll pick up a habit. I mean hobby 🙂

🙂 Total War is really cool if you like military stuff and RTS.

Oh Snap!
Oregon Trail and Odell Lake.

I also like Gizmos and Gadgets on Mac. Circa 1995

My friend had Oregon Trail. It was fun!

My brother plays Everquest, but I never really got into the whole RPG thing. Never had enough time to devote to it.

Plus, my brother always hogged the Atari and Nintendo so I really never played many video games either, except Super Mario Brothers (original) and Metroid (original). Oh and the Goonies. I loved the Goonies game.

Meh. I have other nerdy activities to keep me busy 😉

Off to work!

I had the Goonies game, too... it was great!

Blue Angels is something that everyone needs to see. I saw them last Fall up in Gainesville. Very cool. I know someone who is friends with a fighter pilot. The pilot actually got to be one of the Blue Angels for a season. He said he got pretty bored of it quickly and preferred doing missions instead like he normally would do instead of shows. I can't say I blame him.
The blue angels used to be based (I think it was them anyway) less than 10 miles from where I lived. We used to get to see them practice during the year. It was really cool!!

Pitfall... QBert..... Asteroids... Caterpillar.... Donkey Kong..... Space Invaders....

Pitfall was awesome!

Adventure was my favorite though, with the keys and the mazes and the flying dragons all mapped out in brilliantly low-res graphics.

it doesn't matter- my brother kicked my butt at all of them anyway. except maybe States and Capitals, b/c I'm a nerd like that. (although he's an engineer, so the Biggest Nerd award in my family is kind of a toss-up)

I was lucky, I didn't have a brother. 😀

I have to confess that I don't remember States and Capitols. Which is sad because that would have been right up my alley.

Does anyone remember a book called something like The Big Blue Marble Atlas?

It was geography for little kids. When we were sick, we would read it and my mom would quiz my sister and I on stuff. And we thought it was a fun treat.

God, I'm a dork.
