Are toyotas are reliable as hondas? My husband had a Honda Civic in high school that he literally drove until it died. He says it lasted forever - 250k miles. 😱 Much better than his last car. He had a Neon that needed the engine replaced at not much over 100k miles. We just got rid of it at that point.
Toyotas run extremely well into their life just as Hondas.

Mistake #1: He bought an American car (Dodge)

I always recommend the Honda CR-V... just lived through an ugly wreck in one. I bought it new in 1998 and we had racked up nearly 130K miles on it. NEVER a problem. Built on the Civic chassis, but more space. Hubby drove it when I got the Xterra. Then, he drove it into a couple of poles and it spit some airbags at us. Glad it did too!
Wow, the CR-V is very safe! (just looked up the safety ratings).

It's a little high in the price range but it might be a good option if we decide to go with a used car.

Hey now - I drive a Chrysler Pacifica! 😛

Of course I don't tend to keep my cars until they die - but I was planning on it with the Pacifica. It's my third car in 4 years. 😉 I just kept needing to upgrade.

You could probably get a very nice 2003-05 Honda civic for your price.
I have a 1994 thats still running strong.

A Honda or Toyota is a good investment. You can easily unload it to a kid for their first car since they look pretty sporty.

I have a 1991 Accord that's still running strong.

Toyotas are just as reliable as Hondas, if not more so 😉

Naturally, Lexus and Acura cars are very reliable as well. Just something to keep in mind when we're all doctors 😀

Another option might be one of those Scions (which are just Toyata engines with a different name)

My sister has one and loves it. I personally the xB and xA are pretty ugly but the tC looks real nice.

I plan to run my '03 Civic past residency 😀

You should be able to do that no problem.

Pretty much as long as you don't have an American car or an old Hyundai, you should be able to get 200K+ on your car these days

My younger brother has a hand me down Ford Taurass which has exceeded the 200K mark. Though I'd trust an old Civic over that POS any day of the week.

I wish we had scion up here in canada

But I do agree with others. Honda and toyota are the way to go. You are paying a bit more, but I'd rather pay a bit more and have more dependablilty/resale value then buy an american car or a hyundai/kia. For lower budgets the yaris looks pretty good (not an expert opinion or anything). However it is kinda small. The new honda civic is really nice too.

Yea I drive an 2001 Ford Taurus right now. I had to get the AC replaced this summer already. What a POS.

If you can get 200K on a Taurus without having to put a ****load of $$ in it over the years you might as well play the lottery

 The AC has quit working on his as well. And wouldn't you know, repairing it is more than the BlueBook value for the entire car....

What are your plans for today Guju?

I am just reading over physics chapters in my actual physics text today. Especially things like Double Split experiment and all the modern physics chapters at the end of the text.

I also want to rereview some things about AC circuits and LC and LR circuitry.

Other then that, I'm going to finish going over 3R again tonight and go over other tests that I've taken from TPR and from Ek.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to rereview gchm chapters and bio chapters.

Day after probably will rereview ochem and the remainder of physics chapters and take a Verbal test.....Ek 101 # 9. All next week I'm just going to do verbal tests and review material until Friday which I'm taking off.

Toyotas hold their resale value good and for a sedan I think are better than Hondas, but they are a little more pricey (and not under $20K)

Ford Focuses are another car that we bought that I love. Reliable and nice. But its a ford product. blah.

Question:

I am sort of nieve about this subject, but how common is it for women to have a baby during residency? Is it possible? If so, is it looked down upon or do women generally wait. Do women have children while in medical school?

My gf gets a little bit upset about this topic because the only thing that ever even came close to holding her back from medical school was the fact that she might not be able to have children young (like age 22-25). She has obviously accepted that for now, but I was just wondering if people still do it?

yes. Some people have kids in school, some have during residency, some even both 😉 There are women that have a "support" network like maybe having family living near school or the husband works so he can support having daycare. But some med students wait until residency so they have some money to be able to afford daycare.

I plan on having a kid or two during school/residency 😀

Okay - Honda Civic just jumped to the top of my car possibility list. 😉 It has geat safety ratings, not too expensive ($15k and has tons of standard features that you'd usually have to pay extra for). Plus, I'm sure my husband would be happy driving it because he just loved his old Civic.

Now I just need money. 😉

Good. They seriously are great cars. I plan on getting one when this current one dies.

That's awesome. I'm going to send her this

Okay - I'm too lazy to go search for this answer.

Assuming you don't qualify for need-based financial aid, doesn't anyone know the maximum amount of money the government will give to medical students each year?

I think my gf went just under the max at $60,000 (30,000 this semester)

Although I think it varies based on the school?

I provide full service pathology care. Last week, I diagnosed a guy's renal cell carcinoma (first diagnosis). Yesterday, diagnosed his lung mets. Today, did his autopsy. 🙁 Made me very sad.

I have the worst specimen EVER waiting for me tomorrow. It's basically half of a guy's neck and face, including major neck structures, jaw, tongue, etc. Not cool.

That's really sad beary. 🙁

And what happened to the one you are doing tomorrow?? Is that person still alive with that much of his face missing?

Howdy guys.... apparently my internet issue was actually a computer issue, so I am replacing my notebook with a desktop later this week. Just checking in with the hubby's computer. Unfortunately I can't be on as much since we have to share.

Booooooo!

Good luck to you MCATers - it's getting closer!

Catch you all later this week. Be good!
